"Spenard Song Circle is dedicated to fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and supportive community for musicians and artists in Anchorage, Alaska. We create accessible spaces for creative expression through songwriter showcases, all-ages open mic nights, and collaborative events, emphasizing inclusivity, connection, and the transformative power of music and art."

Artist Statement: Emma Hill

As the founder and musical host of Spenard Song Circle, I am deeply committed to creating spaces where art and community intersect in meaningful and transformative ways. My journey as an artist and community organizer has always been driven by a desire to offer a platform where vulnerability and creativity can flourish, where every voice is heard, and where the collective experience of music brings us closer together. Since launching Spenard Song Circle in the fall of 2017, my goal has been to cultivate a nurturing environment where songwriters and performers of all ages can share their craft in a setting that prioritizes authenticity and connection over commercial gain. Our mission is rooted in the belief that music and art are essential for healing and community building, especially in a world often overshadowed by distractions and divisions. Spenard Song Circle began as a simple idea: to provide a space for artists to perform in a listening-room environment that respects and celebrates their work. Over time, this vision has expanded to include a broader community focus, integrating an all-ages, sober, and inclusive approach to our events. This commitment is reflected in our choice to partner with Rage City Vintage, a venue that shares our values of accessibility and community orientation. In a city where opportunities for emerging artists can be limited, and where the need for safe, supportive spaces is urgent, SSC stands as a beacon of hope and connection. Our events are designed not only to showcase talent but also to foster a sense of belonging and mutual support. By maintaining low-cost or donation-based entry and prioritizing fair compensation for artists, we aim to break down barriers and make artistic experiences accessible to all. My own experiences as an artist have taught me the profound impact that a supportive community can have on one's creative journey. Through Spenard Song Circle, I strive to extend this impact to others, creating moments of shared human experience that resonate far beyond the stage. Whether it’s through intimate performances, open mics, or collaborative projects, my hope is that SSC continues to be a place where art can heal, inspire, and unite. As we move forward, I am filled with gratitude for the support we have received and hopeful for the continued growth and success of Spenard Song Circle. It is through collective effort and shared passion that we can create lasting change and build a vibrant, inclusive arts community for all.

Happy New Year! We have a lot to be thankful for in 2024, even though it was almost the death of us. Through serious help and contributions from our community, SSC is set up to thrive in 2025! We are so thankful to every one of you who donated, shared and helped uplift our Go Fund Me campaign. We are ecstatic to announce support for our programming has now been graciously awarded from Alaska State Council On The Arts, Recover Alaska and The Atwood Foundation! We are thankful that with this support we can continue our programming partnership with Rage City Vintage and Shane Russell Music to provide all-ages and listening room concerts, open mics, songwriting workshops and showcases each month in 2025. We are coming in strong with Open Jam this Saturday, Jan 4th from 1-4pm! Shane will be back the next day, Jan 5th, as well as on Jan 19th 1-4pm to host Sunday Songwriters Circle. These events welcome all ages, all levels and are made free with the support of SSC as an arts 501c3 non-profit! We are taking a break from open mic and our monthly Spenard Song Circle showcase in January so that our founder, Emma Hill, can take an opportunity to expand her own craft at an artist-in-residency program in Chiang Mai, Thailand. We will be back to our full programming in February! Thank you for supporting local art and this tiny, baby organization as we learn more about how we can best support the amazing all—ages music scene we have here in Anchorage. We hope to see you at many events this year!

Tonight! We are hosting our last all-ages open mic of the year at .city.vintage from 6-9pm. All performers welcome to sign up for a 15min slot. Sheet goes out at 6. We will take whatever form of art you have to give as long as it’s not hurtful or hateful. See you tonight! Happy holidays!

Sunday Serenades with Sid Conklin, and had us all in our feels. Thankful for the intimate and cozy vibes everyone brought to .city.vintage while these three talented humans shared their souls through stories and songs. Our next Sunday Serenade is Dec 22nd with Rage City Orchestra and there are only a handful of tickets left, so grab your today!

Hi friends! Happy GIVING TUESDAY! I just want to say thank you to everyone who has continued to support Spenard Song Circle this year. We could not have continued without you.

We have been busy writing grant applications to work towards a sustainable future of our programming and are happy to announce that we just received a mini grant from Recover Alaska. Every show we produce is always all-ages and in a sober environment. Creating and utilizing sober and safe spaces is a critical part of our production and we are so grateful to Recover for all of the work they do in our community and beyond to help folks dedicated to that mission.

I'm happy to say that every dollar that's donated here goes directly to paying artists and show hosts, renting performance space and hosting workshops for songwriters of all levels. To those of you who have already donated, this is what your money has helped pay for already:

We had a packed house for our monthly all-ages open mic .city.vintage ! So much amazing talent with some new names on the roster! Hearing these voices gives me great hope for the future of the ANC music scene.

SSC organizes monthly open mic nights at .city.vintage , open to performers of all ages and artistic mediums. This event offers a supportive, sober environment and provides a safe and welcoming space for young and new artists to gain experience, receive feedback, and connect with the local creative community.
