We got some snow here as the sun went down, started with hail after one of the longest thunderclaps I’ve ever heard. So glad the beds in the field all have frost blankets on them! They should all keep growing through this turn in the weather, and we’re happy for any moisture from the sky. (Even knowing full well it’s going to sprout more weeds where the goats just cleared!)

So many flower babies have been started. So many more to come. It’s been a very mild winter so far, but all of these will be tucked into low tunnels in the field just in case. There’s always a chance the weather will turn freezey-frosty. In fact, it’s pretty probable here in Lake County CA.

And here she is, the one and only anemone in the bed! Happy Valentines Day everyone!

Yowza!!! I found this anemone blossom in one of my beds today. Usually they don’t bloom for me until mid April!?!??? The corms were left in this particular bed from last year, hoping that they would overwinter happily in it’s microclimate, but this is shocking! We’re just out of January.😳 On the bright side, if this turns into a thing, there might be flowers in time for Valentines —next year (there aren’t enough in this bed to open availability). Always something to plan for, and to look forward to, in flower farming!❤️

Looking forward already to this year’s fall Heirloom Mums. They stopped blooming in the hoop house not too long ago in this mild winter season. I was able to get another order for even more varieties of Mums in for this coming fall. Thank you ! Your cuttings are worth the wait!

Taking this time to make some new raised dahlia beds. More beds—more flowers!!!
I have a lot of gopher pressure, so the raised beds have hardware cloth bottoms to keep the gophers from feasting on my tubers. The soil in the field has some very rich clay properties, so the raised beds help me fluff the soil with compost to keep the tubers from rotting with too much moisture over winter—though with this sunny spell and no rain predicted on the horizon, I may have to get the drip lines going on this bed as soon as it’s completed. Farming requires flexibility, a strong back, and the joy of paying attention to nature. I can’t wait to share pictures of these beds when the dahlias are blooming! And if you’re local, please share the farm posts with your friends who might want to follow along this year. We can all use looking forward to something as beautiful as flowers! 🌻

Tonight’s Sunset in the field-with no filter or editing. Our friend’s goats are eating the weeds and adding the fertilizer for this coming springs flower planting. Thank you . One of the caterpillar tunnels covers a bed in the background. I’m looking forward to many flowers this year. I hope you are too!

Some time ago, someone mentioned using ‘cattle ear tags’ for plant markers because they last so long in the elements. I’ve decided to give it a try. My sister in law (who has a ranch) told me that they’ve seen tags last over a decade! That would make them worth the investment-especially if I can keep track of the special perennials that are being planted now on the farm. Thank you in Finley for helping me figure these out.
🙂
Year one starts now. We’ll see how long these last!

Let the games begin!!! As these babies grow, and are released into the field, new trays of sprouting seeds will take their place. They too shall be released to the field, and it will all seem like a blink as we turn around to find blooms in the field! Hurrah!

Throwback Thursday. This is me, loving the flowers even then. Also loving bugs, and mud holes, and salamanders. I WISH I had some of these growing now. I’m not even sure what they are, but if any of you recognize these beautiful white blooms, please let me know. I would love to be able to add them to my offerings!
Also, check out the shirt. Guess the more that things change, the more they stay the same!❤️

I guess it’s time to invest in a time lapse camera! The centering is a bit off, but you get the idea. These are Menton Tulips-they are the classic French Tulip, and are a gorgeous bloomer. You’ll see!

Here are the Silver Parrot Tulips coming up in the field. They are actually a beautiful pink, so the name is a little misleading. If you look closely, you can see a little pink in the leaves. This is the tulip in the last post.

More Spring Flowers. Full blown parrot tulips. When you are able to find local flowers, you get to watch them move in the vase. These tulips open like they are stretching after a sleep. Some open and close every day. All tulips will elongate in the vase- meaning their stems will continue to grow! One day they will be tucked into their floral arrangement, two days later they are a head above the other flowers! I consider that to be “Interactive Flowers”! You decide to cut their stems back down, or let them grow.

Yes, Spring Flowers are coming.....but we still have most of winter to go. Many beautiful flowers, especially the classic Spring Flowers like these Ranunculus and Anemones, need some chill to grow. So worth it!

The sweetpeas are coming! In the second picture you will see what starts up in a day. There were no sprouts at all the day before, and then it happens. Green! It never fails to thrill, when seeds sprout. (Sweetpea is the only flower that ladies fought over at my Farmers’ Market booth when I sold there. The flower’s sent does it. It’s indescribable.) I’ll keep you posted, and hope you get to smell them this year. There’s enough being started that no one need fight over them.🥰

Hello, and a Happy New Year! Traditionally this time of year gives the feeling of a clean slate, and all the possibilities and promise of a new start. Here is some of that ‘new start’. Even in all this winter cold, the plants and flowers faithfully press on. This is one of the first tulips to break through, reinforcing nature’s promise of Spring Flowers. (As long as the deer don’t eat them😅) I can’t wait to show you how they grow! Welcome to the new flower adventure!❤️
