Performance, Printmaking and Costume
Chanel Matsunami Govreau is an interdisciplinary artist and activist based in Brooklyn, NY. They have performed and exhibited across the United States and Asia including the SOMArts Cultural Center, San Francisco, CA; Raandesk Gallery, New York, NY; and Holding House, Detroit, MI.
In 2016, they were awarded a year long artist-in residence grant in Seoul, South Korea and Boston, MA by Arts Connect International. That same year, they were a keynote speaker at the Symposium of Arts and Cultural Inclusion at UM-Boston. Matsunami Govreau has given numerous artist talks at universities and colleges including Parson’s School of Design, New York, NY; College for Creative Studies, Detroit, MI; and the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Cambridge, MA.
Their work has appeared in the Observer, Bitch Magazine and Juxtapoze Online. As a member of the Legendary Iconic House of Ninja, their performance and costume work expands through the world of LGBTQ ballroom culture and nightlife.
Matsunami Govreau received their BFA from UW-Madison in 2011 where they studied performance, printmaking and Asian American Studies.
