Sneak peak at what’s brewing at Bedlam

After much deliberation (and procrastination because i didn’t want to land on this decision) there won’t be a BBQ Bedlam this year. The liability is too high after I shut down the LLC and insurance when i stopped catering. There’s a reason most comps don’t invite the public and don’t feed them:) And i never wanted it to be just a comp.

It’s been an absolute blast celebrating the BBQ community with all of you at Bedlam. Thanks to everyone for the great times and memories and I look forward to seeing you at other venues.

RAFFLE - 2 Bedlam Barrels just made. Both will be in this raffle so a $30 ticket gets you two tries. 125 tickets sold then we draw. LOCAL PICKUP ONLY in Andover Mass.

Venmo $30 with a 🔥 icon so i can find you and comment “paid” below. I’ll reply with your number.

Proceeds will go to Youth Development Organization (YDO). I’ve been closely involved with this amazing org for 8 yrs and they’re in a bind. They need a new HVAC system before they host 140 kids from Lawrence in their Summer program. I’ll post the video showing their program below.

Several folks in this group have one so feel free to ask them about quality: Kevin Yore Bob Clement Ben Ross Tim Leavitt Shane Sorenson Tom Rogers Justin Fuller Derek Cyr

These cost $800 each to make. Everything including powder coat is custom. They're airtight and run 14 hours with a single basket of lump charcoal. Competition favorites, backyard monsters. Wide base with locking caster wheels makes them stable and mobile. Mount for thermo or temp controller fan which is what I use to run overnight set it and forget it cooks.

When we started Bedlam the goal was to have a ball and break even. This year we cut general admission prices in half and sold 2x as many tickets. I also made fewer stupid spending mistakes:)

The total cost of the event is about $4200 including $1800 in payouts, trophies, venue, DJ, stage, supplies, etc. We are on track to exceed that in ticket sales. So that means we are gonna be able to do something amazing - cut a check for charity!

For the last 8 years I’ve been helping Youth Development Organization (YDO) in Lawrence Mass. Their kids go on to get scholarships, great jobs, and grow up to be amazing humans. It’s an organization I’m super proud to help. But it won’t be a big check.

Then I thought, I’ve got a lot of extra BBQ stuff sitting around. So i’m gonna set up a BBQ yard sale with every $ going to the kids.

If others want to sell stuff too, why not. You can keep your money:) We’ll give you a venue / area to sell it. So if you have stuff you want to part with, bring it.

Thanks for making this an amazing event! Really excited to see you all.

Hello BBQ Family!

We're a couple weeks away and couldn't be more excited. Here's what you need to know to make the most of the event.

Cash bar - no outside booze. The Elks is pretty strict about this one and doesn't want to lose their liquor license.

Competition Teams:

We start setting up teams at 6am, fires start as soon as all teams are set or by 7am - whichever comes earlier. Please park in the lot across the field and we'll direct you to your spot. There's plenty of space and everyone will get a great set up. No trucks are allowed to stay in the field so you'll drop off your gear / smokers than park in the lot.

PLEASE READ THE RULES at www.bedlamfarmsbbq.com. Everything is covered there - no gas generators, no mixing proteins, details on allowed garnish, etc.

Please prepare at least 5 bites for our 5 excellent judges this year (no one will complain if you load up 6).

General Attendees (including those setting up tailgates):

All general attendance ticket holders are welcome to set up a tailgate, bring chairs, etc. Tailgaters and the competing teams are eligible for the Best Tailgate award. We set up tailgate spots starting at 7am. Please park across the street until the teams are all set and we'll direct you.

General attendance ticket holders are welcome at any time but if you're looking to talk to and learn from the competitors (most of which love talking Q), I'd recommend after 10am. Most teams will be in the groove by then and will have more time to talk. Plus that's when the bar opens:)

DJ starts around noon. Judging starts at 2pm, awards at 5pm. Big Rig BBQ will have food for sale. Some teams may be giving out samples in foil trays that we will distribute. We bought a gator again for everyone and I'll bet it's done around 12-1pm.

On behalf of all the New England Pitmasters, thanks for supporting this all volunteer celebration of BBQ! We can't wait to see y'all! If you have any questions, just shoot me a note: [email protected].

The Bedlam Story

It all started with two friends and a small smoker. Before long we were diving deep into the art and science of great BBQ - fine tuning recipes, trials of new flavors of wood, new cuts of meat, varied times and temperatures. Our audience was family and friends always gathered in the adjoining backyards affectionately referred to as “Bedlam Farms.”

Things sort of snowballed from there. Competitions, and travel from Austin to Memphis to Kansas City to the Carolinas learning (and eating) from some of the best. We brought BBQ to playoff parties, birthdays, pretty much anywhere we thought we’d have mouths to feed and feedback to learn from.

People started asking if we’d be up for feeding 50 people at their place. We started making our own sauces, rubs, and even custom cookers, dedicating each to different times, temperatures.

When our friends at Oak and Iron invited us to cook at their brewery, we decided to make it official. Six months later we had our first official debut as Bedlam Farms, serving a sell out crowd on a frigid Feb evening.
