It was a sunny Saturday morning and I pulled up to Kayla & Nick’s place, excited to meet their new baby girl.

They welcomed me with open arms, inviting me into their home. They proudly showed me the beautiful pink nursery with carefully curated decorations.

Their dog also greeted me, unsure of who this random stranger was but optimistic that I would provide treats. She was obviously part of the family, so I took a mental note to include her in the pictures.

I snapped some candid pictures, I staged a few mementos, & included anything and everything that could mean something to their new addition—clothes, bows, books, blanket, etc. I wanted to make sure that it told THEIR story. Their special details that made it unique to THEM.

And then my favorite part—I took pictures of the family in their home. Their sanctuary. Their place where they’ve been feeding and changing baby girl—up all hours of the night. Snuggling on the couch or curled up in the rocking chair…these are the candid moments that I adore.

When I was done I didn’t even realize the time! I stayed past longer than I anticipated because I was so engaged with conversation—good conversation. As much as people are clients to me, I consider them a friend and I love hearing their stories.

But alas it was time for me to catch a football game—so off I went! Ready to make more memories with my own little one…since it was his first football game to experience. 😉

My goal this past year has been to capture emotions, while still maintaining authenticity.

No forced poses, only suggestions or light direction.

Doing this creates a comfort in front of the camera. When clients relax, their true personalities can shine ✨

I’m so painfully aware of how much some people *hate* pictures. But yet—there’s this strong desire to capture precious moments.

I aim to get inbetween the comfortable. To push past the awkwardness—to get to a place where you forget there’s even a camera there…🫶🏻

…to me, that’s where those special moments lie.

𝑻𝒊𝒑𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝒇𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒕 𝒔𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1. MAKE THE PLAN 📝 I always have my go-to family portrait shots memorize & prioritize to get those done as SOON as the session starts. Make sure to go over with your photographer any specific shots you want done - because we will put this at the top of our list! 2. EXECUTE THE PLAN 😎 Be quick! I recommend at least one shot of the family together & then get all the individual kid shots done before continuing with more family pictures. 3. EXPECT THE PLAN TO GO OFF THE RAILS...🙈 Kids will be kids! By the time you get their portraits done, their attention span is gone — so this is the perfect time to reintroduce mom & dad and have fun with silly shots to keep them distracted. 4. THROW AWAY THE PLAN! 😆 Never expect a family session to go perfectly - kids are unpredictable. Be ready to go with the flow - if the kids want to play in mud or on the playground, let them! Trust your photographer that they can get those perfect shots while also keeping your kids happy & stress-free. Believe me, most of those candid shots turn out to be our favorites!👌🏻

What can you expect when booking a session with Altar & After Photography?

⁣We pay attention to details. You have a piece of hair in your face? Lipstick on your teeth? - hey girl, we got you! We'll let you know so that we can capture the perfect photos together. They say the devil is in the details, and to us, the details are what makes or break a shot. So put your faith in us -- we will make sure that you are looking your very best! ⁣ ⁣ We put your personality first. Any location that you wish to shoot at, we'll do our best to shoot there - to us, the client knows what they like more than the photographer. It's our job to make sure that we capture the memorable shots all while at a place that means so much to you.⁣ However, if you're stuck on a place to have the photoshoot - don't worry, we know a ton of cute locations! ⁣ We create a comfortable environment. If you have not experienced being in front of a professional camera before, then it is our job to make sure that you are comfortable and relaxed. When you are comfortable and relaxed, the images turn out to be the best portrayal of you (and your loved ones) and those are the shots that really count! ⁣ We create lasting memories. If you are going to be in front of a camera, why not have fun while you do it? We are not the typical photography business you might be thinking of - where we pose you awkwardly (tilt your head a little bit to the right...no the left...no, your other left...) and having you hold the pose for an eternity. No, we want it to be authentic, real, and as close to an accurate representation of your relationship as we possibly can make it. We have a ton of fun tips and tricks up our sleeves we can use to create that fun atmosphere. We've worked with many clients who have never been in front of a camera before, so put your trust in us to get those money shots!
