Dirty PJ

Dirty PJ Ex promoter/DJ. Vinyl collector. If you want me to play records, you can still ask. I’ll either say yes, or no thanks.

See https://www.facebook.com/dirtywaterclub for why I’m mostly retired. I played 7" vinyl at gigs, clubs, pubs, bars and festivals - 1950s & ’60s rock'n'roll, rockabilly, garage-rock, twist, surf, rhythm'n'blues, soul and more - from 1994-2022.

Another vinyl purchase on my Monday off work. As is often the case, it’s another one where I prefer the b-side: Hold On by Bobby Goldsboro with No Fun at the Fair as the a-side, released in January 1967.

Based around Port Arthur, Texas, Chase & Gene had a hard time playing in many parts of the American south due to their group’s multiracial line up.

This 1960 release is basically the same as a 1957 song with the same title on Sun Records by Dickey Lee (even though there are different songwriters listed).

A cheapie from a local record shop.

One of the songwriters here is Corkie Wilkie, who had his own release on HBR and was previously a member of the Dartells and the Bad Seeds.

Connors is likely to be Carol, lead singer of the Teddy Bears (To Know Him is to Love Him) whose group the Chains has a release on HBR in 1966.

Robert Christian, was a Los Angeles DJ and prolific songwriter known as the “Poet of the Strip”.

Who was Boxer, co-writer of the a-side, Do the Bomp?

If an eBay seller can’t copy the artist and song title correctly into their listing I have no sympathy if it means I get to buy it for just £2.

My Baby's Crazy 'Bout Elvis b/w Held for Questioning by Billy Boyle (1962) usually sells for quite a bit more.

The a-side is a bit gimmicky perhaps. But it’s a fun one. I’m enjoying the b-side, which was later recorded by Gene Vincent as an a-side.

After my pint on Saturday afternoon I popped into two more charity shops and one of them gave me this for 50 pence: It’s Just a Little But Too Late by Wayne Fontana & the Mindbenders (1965).

Yesterday’s find: a one sided promo for Besame Mucho by the Coasters (1960). I looked to see if I could get the other one-sided disc to go with it but I’m not spending £65 (on Discogs).

The Coasters with King Curtis.

My first seven inch purchase of 2025: Is it Ever Gonna Happen by Tommy Sands with The Sharks (1959). This is an Australian copy that’s made its way to London. Now to find an Australian Capitol sleeve for it.

During the first stay-at-home period of Covid in the spring of 2020, I started collecting records that I could remember from my mother’s teenaged collection that I didn’t have already (when I saw them cheap enough). This is another one of them: Book of Love by the Monotones (1958).
