I got the 1969 Slim Harpo version of “Mohair Sam” a year or so ago but have been keeping an eye out for Charlie Rich’s 1965 release. It’s not the UK issue, unfortunately, but it’ll do the job for now.

Yesterday’s vinyl find: Skip Stanley was a hillbilly/rockabilly singer from Los Angeles who recorded this in 1956. In the 1990s he re-emerged as an octogenarian rapper.

Liz Seneff was a folk singer from Pittsburgh whose 1964 album was a surprisingly mixed bag. This single is more girl group style. She was later in a pop psych outfit called The Split Level and sang the 1969 Candid Camera theme.

Another from Monday’s outing: Back To School by Ritchie Adams (1960). Adams was a member of the Fireflies of Stella’s Got a Feller “fame”. In the US this was on the tiny Ribbon label (out of New York).

Boogie Cha Cha by Lenny Welch (1961), a cheap but fun one from a local record shop. New Yorker Welch had one US hit but a bunch of cool records.

Why is Thunder ‘n’ Lightnin’ by Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs not more well known? It’s a great remake of the Hoyt Axton tune (itself a record worth grabbing too).

Another cheap find from the weekend. The Midnights formed in Coventry in 1963, and put out just this one single, Show Me Around b/w Only Two Can Play (on the Ember label), in 1965.

Based around Port Arthur, Texas, Chase & Gene had a hard time playing in many parts of the American south due to their group’s multiracial line up.

This 1960 release is basically the same as a 1957 song with the same title on Sun Records by Dickey Lee (even though there are different songwriters listed).

I bought a copy of Open Up Your Door by Richard & the Young Lions in New York about 20 years ago and randomly met the band’s drummer the same day, at the Lakeside Lounge. I didn’t imagine I’d ever find a UK pressing. But everything comes to he who waits, they say.

Another one from Friday’s record shopping and as is often the case it’s the b-side I’m going for: Booga Dee by Mike Felix (1966). I assume this is the same Mike Felix who was in the Migil Five.

I went to a record shop on my non working day on Friday and this is one of the records I got: Er Um Er by George Bean (1964). Not very well known but I’m enjoying the vibe of it. Whatcha think?
