An Evening of Khayal: Shashwati Mandal in Concertening of Khayal with Shashwati Mandall!

An Evening of Khayal: Shashwati Mandal in Concert

Shashwati was born in Gwalior in a family of musicians. Her maternal grandfather Pt. Balabhau Umdekar β€˜Kundalguru’ was a darbar-gayak (court musician) at the royal court of Gwalior, and a singer of the Gwalior gharana

She started her early classical training under the guidance of her mother, Smt. Kamal Mandal, at a very young age. From 1987-1992, she received a Department of Culture (Govt of India) scholarship to study under the veteran Gwalior gharana singer Pt. Balasaheb Poonchhwale

Balasaheb instilled into her the finer nuances of Gwalior gayaki, and also trained her into the art of Tappa singing, the vibrant semi-classical genre. She continued her training with her gurus, Balasaheb Poonchhwale and Kamal Mandal until their deaths in 2005 and 2006, respectively

Shashwati has integrated these eclectic musical leanings into her gayaki (musical style). She has received praise for her full-throated resonant voice, and clarity of taans and murkis

Our Story

Since 2009, ICMSV has acted as an online portal promoting and organizing Indian classical music & dance programming. On December 6th 2017, ICMSV was incorporated as a not-for-profit under the BC Societies Act.

It started off just as a page, in efforts to offer a space where all events pertaining to Indian classical music & dance could be promoted for free to foster a larger, more diverse audience. That led to helping out organizations with holding events, whether it be through managing their event marketing, or through providing volunteers and helping the logistics of the event.

Slowly but surely we took on organizing events of our own. All funds would go solely to the performers and venues, as we were not incorporated. To create a more sustainable practice, in which we could expand our efforts we finally went for incorporation.

We pride ourselves in fulfilling our mandate:
