We are excited to host The Veena and The Voice: Workshops with Bahauddin Dagar which are specially designed workshops to explore the Dhrupad traditionโ€™s intimate connection between the voice and the veena through sound production and ornamentation.

The Dagar lineage has studied the intersections of the voice and veena intimately, with many members of the family training in both vocals and veena simultaneously. This was the case for veena maestro Bahauddin Dagar, who represents the 8th generation of musicians in his family.

The workshops are open to vocalists and melodic instrumentalists alike from across traditions (Hindustani, Carnatic, Jazz, etc.) who are looking to imbibe Dhrupad and veena stylization, sound practice, and ornamentation. The student level is geared towards those who have developed familiarity with their voice/instrument and is recommended for intermediate/advanced practitioners or those with a minimum of 5 years of training in their respective form.

This program is co-presented by the ICMSV - Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver and Kalฤvฤแน‡ฤซ Institute

The beauty of Indian classical music is in experiencing it in close proximity. โ€˜Baithakโ€™ roughly translates to โ€œsitting roomโ€ or โ€œmeetingโ€. These chamber concerts, typically hosted in peopleโ€™s homes, have been the traditional way in which this music has been shared and cultivated across generations. The synergy that forms between the artists and the audience in a baithak is truly something else โœจ Weโ€™re excited to be presenting one this Saturday with veteran vocalist Ramesh Jule along with local artists Mohan Bhide (harmonium) and Hriday Buddhdev (tabla)

Hereโ€™s a clip of Ramesh Jule singing the evergreen ghazal โ€˜Mohabbat Karne Waleโ€™, originally sung by Mehdi Hassan, at an informal gathering ๐ŸŽถ

Our Story

Since 2009, ICMSV has acted as an online portal promoting and organizing Indian classical music & dance programming. On December 6th 2017, ICMSV was incorporated as a not-for-profit under the BC Societies Act.

It started off just as a page, in efforts to offer a space where all events pertaining to Indian classical music & dance could be promoted for free to foster a larger, more diverse audience. That led to helping out organizations with holding events, whether it be through managing their event marketing, or through providing volunteers and helping the logistics of the event.

Slowly but surely we took on organizing events of our own. All funds would go solely to the performers and venues, as we were not incorporated. To create a more sustainable practice, in which we could expand our efforts we finally went for incorporation.

We pride ourselves in fulfilling our mandate:
