Please join me and Kimberly Pymm of Cultivate Market for an evening of flower therapy at the only workshop I will offer this year.

(More details below.)

I have had so much admiration and respect for Kimberly Pymm as I observed her dream up her beautiful, thoughtful zero-waste business, Cultivate Market.

So I am thrilled to announce our collaboration, the one and only workshop I will be offering this year, coming up on the evening of Friday, May 20.

DAY: Friday, May 20
TIME: 6:30-8:30 pm
LOCATION:
Art Studio 4,
3474 S 2300 E #4,
Salt Lake City, UT
*Behind Roots Cafe.

We will take some time with each other, with flowers, and with nature, to pause and reconnect as we build nature-inspired floral centerpieces using locally grown flowers and wild foraged texture.

In this hands-on course, we will learn how to source seasonal local flowers, the basic principles of design, and ways to incorporate the practice of flower arranging as a means of re-centering and getting back in touch with nature.

When I met Olivia, she told me she was a potter. She dreamed of desert-inspired blooms in a minimalistic form that would drape over little bowls fashioned by her in a striking cerulean blue. Blue like the desert sky over red rock in the Utah desert.

After that, I sat with Emmily of Gatherist as she described an incredible handmade arch she had dreamt with an interior that would paint that same striking blue of Olivia’s pots. I thought about that visual recurrently in the months to come.

I began Olivia’s arrangements with a bit of wild in garden-grown Apache Plume. A Utah desert native plant, it features the most beautiful textural open branches topped with soft pink otherworldly plumes. To that, I added Lisianthus in taupe, a stunning and resilient flower native to the plains and bright sun. We softened the look with locally grown Poppies and wild roses. Colors were soft blush and gold and arranged to catch the light of golden hour.

The day I arrived at Under Canvas, early in June, it was 115 degrees. Literally. There were blast furnace winds that whipped tablecloths off tables and sent silverware flying. We set down bowls of flowers and watched them melt before our eyes as we stuffed them with desert rock to keep them from capsizing.

In the end, Jamie and I sat on a hidden hillside and watched in awe as Olivia’s stunning veil whipped hauntingly in the wind, billowing around that stunning arch and her wild bouquet. Despite all obstacles, the wedding was pulled together gorgeously by Emmily and her team.

This was one of the better days of last year. Nearing the end of the season, out in the desert, surrounded by some of my favorite humans for our dear friends Sierra and Cam on their wedding day. I remember walking out on a ledge with Haley to scout a spot for the table and looking back, on Sierra and Cam pulling a feast out of the truck while Shey and Lex chatted with my kid in the red sand. I remember perfect temperatures, soft breezes, and golden light. I remember a moment of togetherness I had longed for. Thank you to for this beautiful photo.

This day was about meaning. Every moment was imbued with intention. The soft morning shadow on leather moccasins, to a hawk feather, serendipitously found, to Sierra’s braided hair, to Cameron’s ring, to the blue indigo corn sourced from a local farm.

The location was utter magic in the soft desert sand, red rock, ancient petroglyphs, and fragrant sage.

And every bloom that came to me for Sierra’s bouquet felt like it was meant just for her. From dancing Cosmos, to Aztec Zinnia just peeking over my cutting garden, to foraged golden grasses waving in the sunset.

I drew from the abundance of the season for an intimate dinner overlooked by desert buttes, in black tomato, corn, white thistle, soft delphinium, and golden autumn yarrow.

All paired beautifully with Sierra’s own plant-dyed linens in ochre, earthen candleholders by , and soft candlelight.

As an added treat, I was joined by who helped plan the elopement and shoot these otherworldly photos, along with who created this stunning film.

I think it's possible we've lost touch with reality.

And within that, I think it's also possible we've lost a sense of the importance of making mistakes. The beauty of our flaws. The power of the moment we get to admit to someone we love that we messed up. And ask them to make space for our humanity.

This latest episode of Wild Flora TV is possibly my favorite. Watch me bumble through making a bouquet in a blizzard (not part of the plan).

Somewhere in there you can hear laughing along with me. And is there too freezing her keister off just to get me some good photos.

I have always loved these women and my friendship with them. But this was a needed reminder of how lucky I am to have friends like these. Because they see me as a whole being and are willing to show up even when what I have to offer is less than perfect.

To my fellow creative friends, be careful of comparison.

As the world returns to full volume, and our feeds fill back up to overflowing, just a gentle reminder to distinguish between inspiration and comparison. Inspiration is exciting, heart expanding, and full of hope. Comparison is contracting, alienating, and devastating to authentic creation.

If you find yourself in the latter space, put your phone away, take a moment to pause, honor where you are on your creative journey, congratulate yourself for what you have accomplished through plenty of hard work and discipline, go outside and watch the shadow and light at play on the soil. This, here, now is where you belong.

Christine and Nick got married under the summer sun, in the high desert just outside High West Distillery (), in Wanship, Utah. Christine’s immaculate dress and train were carefully carried by two sweet kids all the way up the dusty trail to our arch, bursting with roses and vining greenery and anchored by desert rock.

There was wind and sun and heat and bottomless whiskey and live jazz and evening breezes and warm candlelight and dancing and cake cutting and so much joy.

I remember them both, smiling endlessly and saying the kindest thank you’s as we wandered by with their wedding arch, changing over to one beautiful bursting reception.

I filled this wedding with soft pastel floral inspired by the sage green of surrounding grasslands, soft summer sunsets in blush and creme garden roses. All by and native desert apache bloom plucked from the low water section of my landscape. All spilling over hand-made bowls in sandstone by .

Christine and I worked together to create custom table signage in hand-made rustic wood sign holders by local woodworker . My favorite local producer of hand-dyed linens, Connor Wilde-Mathie () created soft gauze napkins, runners, and tablecloths in silvery grey.

We worked with Melissa of High West to create dinner and bar menus that reflected Christine and Nick’s taste in modern minimal lines and rustic chic appeal.

And it was all seamlessly and effortlessly planned and orchestrated by Braelynn of .

The Kinlands is a place I love to be. From sitting in the sunlit greenhouse at golden hour to touring the high tunnels filled with strawberries to perusing the market for locally grown produce and artisan chocolate, I feel incredibly lucky each time I get to work or visit there. I would love it if you'd join me there for one of only two in-person workshops I will be holding this year. At The Kinlands 'Long Nights of Winter' celebration we'll meet in the greenhouse to build wild foraged wreaths. Naturalistic and nature inspired, your final wreath will be one-of-a-kind and definitely not store bought.

This time last year, I spent a crisp winter afternoon in the mountains, permit in hand, only an hour or two from my home with my pup and my sweet family hand-selecting one wild holiday tree straight from the forest. A full year of pine cones socked away from camping trips, yards of plant-dyed silk ribbon and bits of collected vintage brass bells, and one sunlit morning in my studio was all it took to create a really special holiday wreath for our door. This year, more than any other year in my life that I can recall, it's become imperative to me to spend my days in gratitude for the quiet abundance that is all around me.

Available this month only at wildflora.tv, learn to make a wild holiday wreath inspired by evergreen filled winter landscapes and wild forest floor texture with rustic touches in silk ribbon and vintage bells.

Here’s to early mornings, late nights, and the most challenging wedding season of my career. My hands are ruined but pictures like these remind me why I do this. During a week of unprecedented flower shortages, we were able to get every stem we needed for our weddings. So much gratitude to our wonderfully hard working reps at for finding us our imported stems and all the local farmers we leaned on to find us everything else. I have always prioritized local flowers. Never has it been more important to a successful week of flowering than now. Thank you to , , and for all the most beautiful locally grown things. And to for showing up with a bucket of things when I mentioned it was the most stressful flower ordering week of my career. I could not do this without all your incredibly hard work.
