All packed and ready to go for one more time around the sticks! Huge thank you to all of our sponsors that help make this happen.
After our less than desire-able 2019 season, the team felt like we left something out on the course that we had to go get back. had reached out directly to give us first offer at Mojo, and after quite a bit of deliberation, we decided that this was the best path forward for us. Obtaining a known fast airplane with a long racing pedigree and with the motivation to come back strong; we were making big plans and excited for the 2020 season… With that being what it was, a lot of momentum was lost. Once it finally became apparent NCAR ‘21 would happen, we got back to work, but the scope was limited. Back on the course at PRS was great, and flying with and around the sticks is always special! We made good progress in speed mod season, accomplished all of our primary objectives, and we were able to run more power than the airplane had ever seen before. We were constantly fighting fuel pressure issues though. The goal race week was to qual ASAP to get in the show, and then use the rest of early week to fiddle with the fuel system. Qual was flown around 70” MAP; engine temps were warm, and the airplane was about 30 mph off pace. Focusing on the fuel issue, we went to work that evening with the goal of testing during the next flight. At start up, the crew cheif noticed the port turbo spitting a size-able amount of oil. He commanded a shut down, we rolled the airplane back to the pit, and discovered one chowdered turbo and another on the brink of destruction. Draining the oil revealed a glitter show that would put a disco ball to shame: the engine was done, and so were we for ‘21. Retiring from the race, the team spent the rest of the week helping other teams and generally supporting the Sport Class.

2019. After experiencing a series of cascading catastrophic failures ultimately leading to an engine out approach with no instrumentation or radios and screeching to a fiery hault using 8500ft of runway, I was given a half a second to give my family and crew cheif a hug to show them I was alive prior to being whisked away to all of the debriefings. A few hours later, I was finally able to peel off the flight suit that was reeking of burnt fiberglass in our empty pit. Wandering over to the Bad Dingo tent, which was basically full of the entire sport class, I was greeted by many hugs, and then George Catalano who handed me a glass of “Bad Dingo” and a handshake. The greeting was, “I’m so glad you’re here…” and as our hands clasped, “…Skippy.” The entire tent went wild, and the call sign “Skippy” has remained ever since.

Sean “Skippy” Van Hatten has been around planes his whole life, and is looking to take home a victory as the race pilot for Havoc Air Racing.
If a few short days, we’ll be back here tearing it up one more time. Racing is awesome, but there’s nothing quite like the 45+ min course seesions at Pylon Racing Seminar in June. 📷
Great story by our pilot Sean VanHatten about our first year racing as a team. Check out this story and all of his previous racing history on his page. Huge thanks to Joe and Ramp Rat Racing for helping us out in 2018!
We’re out at Pylon Racing Seminar in Reno having a great time with out Mojo is running great, with her and providing lead and instruction support for the Sport Class rookies that are aspiring to obtain a race license foe this year’s races. Thanks for the great capture!
🔥🔥 New intake complete! Intercooler delete, more efficient routing, and wiggins style clamps for the couplers. Can’t wait to get this in the air!

Throwback to chasing us down the start chute in the original Havoc Reno 2019.

Let’s go back to those September morning views.
Speed-mod season has been in full swing for us for quite a while now, so we have some catching up to do here! We received our overhauled and race modified engine built for us by and successfully hung it on the airframe. There’s a lot of cool stuff hiding under that pretty exterior, and when Pinnacle did the initial dyno runs prior to shipping the engine, the results were…. we’ll let’s just say that we’re excited about what’s on here 😈
We’re gutted to hear the news that this is our final year in Stead, but we’re excited to show off one more time what our fire-breathing race plane can do! Time to light the fires for one last epic hurrah around the sticks in Reno! 📷
Sometimes you have to make the tough call: Despite a monumental effort from the team this past year, we had to make the decision to not race this year as some critical components simply took longer to acquire and come together than anyone anticipated. We would like to extend a huge expression of gratitude to our team, our sponsors such as for getting the new race motor together, for fast tracking some new and larger Precision turbos, for their continued efforts supporting the race program, Thermodynamic Sciences for tweaking more and more fuel flow for us, for their support, for keeping our pilot safe and comfortable, for instrumentation, for eye protection, and finally our friends and family for putting up with our non-sense! We’ll be comin’ in hot with our new race motor and going for the gold in 2022!
The new firewall forward for Mojo is coming along nicely…
It’s been a disappointing few days for the team. During qualifying, we were about 30mph off the pace that was anticipated with the power setting that we were running. The next 24 hours were diagnosing the issues and trying to figure out where the speed went, and at the end of the day we discovered that the motor was burned up which forced us to retire from the races this year. We run these engines incredibly hard to go the speeds we do, and this is just a very real part of racing. Overall we’re in good spirits, the airplane is in one piece, and we’re working on a recovery plan and engine overhaul. A huge thank you to the team where everyone pulled it together to get here this year and also to our sponsors who help make this happen for us. We’ll be here the rest of the week, so come by the pits and say hi! At the end of the day, 335 on a hurt engine, which would have had us starting in 4th place, aint too shabby!
We’re flying Sport 3, “Mojo” with for a qualification attempt at 1505 today at the
Practice day. We can’t wait to get back in the course again this afternoon. 📷 Kevin Eccles
Good morning race fans, Havoc Air Racing is HERE!!
Let’s go racing!!!
coming back after another successful test flight. “Mojo” is running better than ever!
The many moods of a Glasair.
Sure is a beautiful place to do some flight testing.
No music needed. We love the sound of 580 turbo charged cubic inches coming to life.
Making sure the landing gear is in tip top shape prior to the races. So far, looking great!

Sound up! After a monumental effort from the team, all the hard work paid off in a flawless first flight on the new engine. Sport 3 is back in the game! Great work to everyone @advancedaviationinc and @pinnacle_aircraft_engines @flyseanfly says this is one of, if not the, smoothest piston engines he’s ever flown 😎 Can’t wait to see what she’ll do with some boost 😈
She’s alive! Great first run where everything worked and no leaks! Thank you @advancedaviationinc for all the hard work putting it together, @pinnacle_aircraft_engines for the rebuild, and @boostlab for the help on the new turbos. Can’t wait to get her in the air!
The first of many for this season. Actually happy to see the Glasair back in it’s natural habitat 🤣 #gearswing #gearswingsgallore
Nose gear tunnel coming together. The main purpose here is to clean up the exit airflow of the cowl. There is a drag reduction due to the absence of leakage through the nose gear doors as well as increased cooling as the exit air is more efficiently evacuated from the cowl. Given some of challenges with the Glasair landing gear system, we suspect that the reduced air load on the NLG during retraction will show an improvement in functionality as well.
