the amaryllis were worth the extra week they took to open, I’m enjoying my time off but can’t help day dreaming and making plans for the new year. It has been such a tough season for so many small businesses, I spent last evening surrounded by friends I’ve had for 30 years, most of whom have creative and varied businesses of their own. To see some of them celebrating 25 years in business, 30 years as artists reminds me that we’ve gone through tough times before. I started Sullivan Owen in the wake of 2008/9, wonderful things can come from bad times, we’re forced to be more tenacious, nimble and work harder. It feels even harder having gone through it before but I’m so grateful for this creative life. PS. be glad that you can’t smell posts yet, that juniper must have gone bad since Xmas and it had to be trashed-sorry Anj 😘

it’s my birthday and i just received my first sample of Draped No 1, my largest vase yet. Join me to unbox it from a seriously huge box and then I’ll arrange some flowers in it. This vase was my first design to be sculpted entirely digitally, I even used digital fabric to drape it.

like many florists from the early days of IG, I love a still life. Before reels, a Dutch Masters still life was the thing you aspired to post. I’ve improved my photo skills over the years but never could quite achieve the balance of light and dark. So I was so happy to connect with and send her Barely Cinched. I suspected the curves would show beautifully through her lens and I was right. I’m thrilled with my very first still life with one of my vases!

this all has been quite the roller coaster, I appreciate everyone who bought vases so very much! Envelope is sold out and there’s just a few left in Twist and one Barely Cinched. I will definitely restock but get on the email list to find out when that will be!

Keeping it simple as I basically pace around waiting for my long awaited first vase collection drop on Saturday. Fortunately these dahlias do the heavy lifting for me. What’s your favorite Dahlia to grow?

Koko Puff-a personal favorite-overwinters here in Zone 7 for me
(in my head I always call them Mini Winnies, which is what Kimberley called them once-as in mini versions of the chameleon Jowey Winnie)
Otto’s Thrill-the best Fall pink I think, a little bit of warmth in the undertones makes it sing with fall foliage
Emory Paul- there’s only one but it demanded to join the party.

the back of Twist No.1 is my current favorite look. I’m in the middle of 5 days of designing and shooting photos but got some much needed sleep last night so i’m ready to go again today. Each day i’m finding new angles for the vases, watching as my freelance gang comes over and plays with them and makes their own discoveries. As hard and scary as all this has been, I’m excited for them to head out into the world. Email subscribers will get the sale date end of the week so you should sign up. ⬆️

Drop a Hint for Valentine’s Day! Forward this post to your significant other to drop a hint, well-it’s not very subtle but it’s all in good fun. If your SO never knows how to do Valentine’s right, ask them to send you a Baby Twist vase and then fill it with flowers. We suggest ordering they order from your local florist, a small bouquet will do the trick and poof, you’ve got both a vase they can fill over and over again and the flowers to make their day! Thanksgiving is the only holiday we host and I try to make the most out of my one chance to decorate my own celebration. This year I made the vases for the centerpieces and my first prototypes for candlesticks which I’m hoping to produce in brass and silver. What are you doing for the holidays?
