UArts…On Thursday afternoon my partner husband spent several hours meeting with the new cohort of students in museum studies grad program at UArts, and was looking forward to working with them. On Friday evening he was casually looking at Facebook on his i-phone and saw a post of the Inquirer news article with the headline that UArts was closing June 7. We were stunned, no one knew - not the head of the program, not the Dean; the question was, who knew?
I keep hoping there is some way to hold the Board leadership accountable for their mismanagement. Can there be some way to provide time and space to remedy whatever the “non compliance” issues are ?
It seems to me the cultural eco-system in Philadelphia is already so fraught, made so by those who have power, particularly over “purse-strings.” And on the larger landscape it reflects the growing disregard for the importance of arts and humanities in our society.
So much, for the Avenue of the Arts... The UArts students, faculty, workers all provided life to South Broad Street. Can the City weigh in here, too?
