Friendly reminder that if you're tying the knot in OR or WA state, you can obtain your marriage license from ANY COUNTY in that state (it does NOT have to be the county your ceremony takes place in!)

Here's what I tell all my couples:
+ find the county most convenient for you, and start on their website
+ find out the process for the county you've chosen (IE is it in person, online, a hybrid of both, or all by mail?)
+ if you're a destination couple, be sure to build in an afternoon to visit the courthouse/county-building (if needed) before you head to your final destination
+ AND always double check what documents are needed (if any) to show if you DO need to go for an in-person portion.

You should be an advocate for communication between all of your vendors, but did you know that sending a photo of your dress to your cake designer can make absolute magic happen?

Fun fact about champagne-- warm bottles don't just "pop", they quite literally EXPLODE.

Great for these types of photos (when done safely!), but awful for your champagne tower moment.

We learned this the hard way when Eric tried to warn me about a room temp champagne bottle that had been sitting out for awhile. He gave one single twist to the cage to ready it for our couple, and BAM-- champagne shower.

TL;DR: Ensure the champs are chilled for your towers and room temp is fine if we're trying to make it rain for a photo like this!

Yes, you can repurpose your ceremony altar arrangements to your reception tables, BUT ONLY IF they're proportionate AND you're not doing family style service. Don't give your servers a panic attack when they approach your guests, hands full (and probably burning, let's face it), and see your tables filled with giant arrangements that need to be relocated.

Just (don't) do it. 🙅🏼‍♀️

What're you loving right now?

For me, I've been SO enjoying the opportunity to work alongside other creatives and organizations this season. We've laughed, we've "welp"'d, we've cackled (not the same as laughing), and we've made some serious magic.

I used to work in Talent Acquisition, so it gives me all the feels when I get to work people who are engaged in what they do.

I'm always so excited to see the same (and new!) faces appearing on behalf of companies I love. I hope coming to work alongside team AME is just as fun for you as it is for us!

PS Garrett and I recreated a photo we took on our wedding day during an anniversary sesh with Rithy. It makes me giggle. As Callie says, "take the work seriously, but never take yourself seriously." 😂

This quote was one I photographed from The Four Seasons' book: The Art of Hospitality, and it resonated with me! The wedding industry is heavily intertwined in the hospitality industry; if it were a tree, they'd both be branches. So much of what we do focuses on guest experience and the ex*****on around it.

Guest experience: something I'm passionate about. I've come to believe that, like most things in life, you're either hardwired to pay attention to it and value it, or you're not.

I love that my Dad worked in hospitality for the better part of his career. Though I didn't begin my wedding planning journey until after he passed, so many of the people I interact with and have the opportunity to work alongside affirm that I made the right choice.

What was that Joan of Arc quote? "I am not afraid. I was born to do this."

The biggest mistake I see people making on their wedding days: not eating!

It's SO easy to get wrapped up in the onslaught of events happening day-of, I know. I build in actual timeline reminders for my clients and their wedding parties to take (at least) a bite of something and to stay hydrated. I always carry protein-rich snacks and hydration sticks in my em emergency bag!

Your delicious meal from catering is still hours away when you start photos--take care of yourself!

What's in my emergency bag?

+ Salud Hydration (the BEST ones out there, I swear! I've tried them ALL!)
+ Extra dress socks
+ Hygiene items (toothpaste, deodorant, tampons, etc.)
+ First aid items (burn gel, ointment, bandaids, etc.)
+ Tool kit, gloves (work and nitrile), safety pins, duct tape
+ Pain relief (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, pepto)
+ Image items like bobby pins, lint rollers, etc.
+ SNACKS

Basically, if you need something day of, we'll have you covered 😘

FAQs I receive:

+ "How many appetizers should we serve during cocktail hour?" 3-4, with 1-2 being either vegetarian/gluten free, or both! And tray-passed, always.

+ "How long should I book my DJ for?" 5.5-6 hrs tends to be the sweet spot here. You'll want to ensure they're on-site for guest arrival through the end of the reception, and ALWAYS note whether or not they'll need more than one set up to accommodate the venue.

+ "How far in advance should we contract ____?" Honestly, if that vendor's books are open and you're in a position to make it rain deposit-style, go for it! Don't sleep on your #1 choices!

+ "Do I need my hair and makeup artist to stay throughout the day?" Dependent on two factors-- 1. Are you planning a second look, and is it more than just an outfit change? And 2. Is your wedding in a location that is subject to extreme wind, heat, etc? Most artists will leave you a touch up kit for lips, etc. throughout the day, but if you're anticipating needing a more comprehensive "zhuzhe", have them stay!

Interesting topic that came up recently-- how do we elevate and make the ordinary feel more luxe or chic?

Materials are everything here. Seek first that items on-site during your day are quality. Flimsy plastic easels, plastic folding chairs, plastic disposable flatware, etc. don't really have a place at an elegant soirée.

Signage should feel sturdy, heavy, and be proportionate to the direction you're trying to provide (seating charts should be much larger than a menu or bar sign, for example.)

Vendors, have you all heard about ?

I love this program for many reasons, let me list them out for you:

+ You can design a complete 3D rendering of your couple's space, down to the last detail, for them to walk through.
+ You have the ability to request that anything be added to their ever-growing inventory (from a large decor element like staging down to a specific shape or type of votive!)
+ Your seating charts just became 1k times more organized. Upload guests using their spreadsheet (which includes dietary restrictions and allergies!), and then you or the client can drag and drop guests into their seats.
+ Equally seamless on the back end, Merri also allows me to export a document and seating map to hand off to catering. This creates a truly flawless service, as staff already is aware of where guests are seated, what they're eating, and what allergies they may have, without trying to eagle eye for a specific tag or menu on their plate.

Inspiration can sometimes be hard to come by, so let's break down why the wedding industry has it in spades.

It's our business to make what inspires our clients that which inspires us! Plainly put, if you come to me with a color palette-- I'll find a way to build your day around it. If you come to me with a single photo of a plate, I'll figure out how to create a tablescape that features it.

Inspiration lives in glimpses of sunshine (sometimes hard to come by in the PNW), angles of buildings, and that feeling you get when you're somewhere thinking, "THIS."

Did you know that most parking garages in PDX have a 6' clearance? I didn't either! I believe that weddings should be stress free. I believe that timelines are golden. I believe that those choosing to unite in marriage should work with their Wedding Planner in a safe, fun, collaborative environment. Lastly, I believe that the best compliment a couple can receive is that their wedding was so "them."

I started assisting on events in a corporate role beginning in 2012. From there, I moved to an internship assisting on ten weddings in one Summer and planning my own wedding. I left my corporate role then and worked two solid years planning everything from meetings to weddings to charity galas and even assisting on a couple county fairs! I’m now planning weddings and events full time with Alston Mayger Events, and I’m so.damn.proud to have the opportunity to work with you.
