Empathy takes more effort and vulnerability than sympathy does from us. It’s about stepping into the other person’s world and trying to feel their experience alongside them. This doesn’t mean we fully understand what they’re going through—we’re all unique—but it does mean we’re making an intentional effort to connect. Empathy might sound like this: “I can’t imagine how overwhelming this must be for you. It sounds like a lot to carry, and I want you to know I’m here if you need someone to talk to.”

With empathy, there’s a sense of closeness, a shared human connection that reassures the other person they’re not alone. Instead of simply acknowledging their pain, empathy offers presence and understanding. It’s less about saying the “right thing” and more about showing up and being real.

Empathy also invites us to check in with ourselves. When responding, we might name our own emotions—“I feel heartbroken hearing this”—or admit that we’re not sure what to feel but want to support them. Offering to listen or be there often flows naturally when we’re in this space of connection.

When someone close to us—our partner, family member, or friend—shares a difficult experience, there’s an unspoken exchange that unfolds. Let’s call it a dance.
No matter how big or small the issue they’re sharing, we often find ourselves face-to-face with their vulnerability, unsure of how to respond. This moment is delicate. It’s a one-shot opportunity to set the tone, and how we choose to respond can either deepen the connection or create distance. In personal relationships, this dance is especially important because our reactions speak volumes about how we show up for the people we care about.

Play to Enhance, Not Escape

Digital play isn’t the enemy! The trick is to approach it intentionally and in moderation. When you set goals, stay mindful, and balance it with other areas of your life, you can enjoy the benefits without falling into the trap of avoidance.

Let’s make our playtime intentional and meaningful!

How to have the mindset for healthy tech use....

1. Set Intentional Goals for Your Digital Play
Before you dive into your favorite game or app, take a moment to ask yourself: What do I want to get out of this? Maybe you want to relax, learn a new skill, or connect with others. Setting a purpose for your play grounds the experience and makes it more meaningful.

For example, if you’re gaming, decide ahead of time what you’ll work on—like reaching a specific level or playing for a set amount of time. By doing this, you’re less likely to fall into a mindless rabbit hole and more likely to feel accomplished when you’re done.

2. Practice Mindful Play
Mindfulness is about staying present and fully engaged in whatever you’re doing. When it comes to digital play, this means focusing on the experience itself. Notice the details—the graphics, the story, the emotions you feel as you play. Are you genuinely enjoying it, or are you just zoning out?

Mindful play also involves taking breaks and checking in with yourself. Before you start, ask: Am I playing to relax and have fun, or am I avoiding stress, boredom, or loneliness? Reflecting on these questions can help you identify patterns in your habits and guide you toward more intentional use.

3. Balance Digital Play with Offline Activities
Digital play can be a great way to unwind, but it’s most beneficial when balanced with real-world activities that support your overall well-being. Try using digital play as a reward after completing a task or as a way to relax after a busy day. Pair it with offline activities like going for a walk, cooking, or spending time with loved ones.
This balance reinforces the idea that play—digital or not—is a healthy, enjoyable part of life, not a way to escape from it. Plus, mixing it up helps keep your playtime fresh and fun.

Let’s be real—I’ve been doing some soul-searching this week about my relationship with digital play. I’m in that funny in-between generation: old enough to remember life without tech everywhere and young enough to have spent most of my life with it. I read all the parenting advice on navigating technology, chat with other parents about it, and try not to slip into the “tech is bad!” mindset. Still, I find myself wondering: how do we use technology in ways that serve us, and where’s the line between fun and too much?

Here’s the kicker—I do enjoy digital play! I’ve spent way too long trying to beat a couple more levels in the Water Sort game, and I’m fiercely proud of my 900-day Duolingo streak (1000 days, here I come!). But there’s also a part of me that gets uneasy about mindlessly scrolling or shopping just to pass time. Those 30-minute black holes leave me feeling disconnected and unintentional.

My concern isn’t about the tech itself but about why I use it. Am I playing to relax and unwind, or am I escaping something I’d rather not face? Escapism is part of being human—sometimes, we need a mental break to cope with life. But the how and what we choose to escape into matters. Too much of anything—whether it’s eating, sleeping, or even hobbies—can take a toll. And while certain escapes like workaholism or substance abuse are more obviously harmful, even seemingly harmless escapes, like gaming or scrolling, can turn problematic if they go unchecked.

Personally, I try to steer my escapism toward things that feel more enriching, like creating art, dancing, reading, or spending time with my cat. But even those can get out of balance if I’m not mindful. So, what do we do about digital play? How can we keep it within healthy limits and ensure it serves us rather than controls us?
Here’s what I’ve landed on: the goal is to use digital play—or any form of escapism—in ways that enhance your life, not as a way to avoid it.

As a single, sometimes it doesn't seem like play is an option for us when we are alone. But I beg to differ. There are a lot of ways to let the creativity and pleasure ensue! Here are some of my favorites...

1. Reflective Journaling: Ending my day with a journaling practice like “Rose-Bud-Thorn,” where I write down one highlight, one area of growth, and one challenge from the day.

2. Mindful Creativity: Meditative activities like coloring, doodling, or working on a mandala. These repetitive, calming tasks help quiet my mind.

3. Coming soon to my house: Self-Care Bingo: I'm creating a bingo card filled with self-care ideas that bring me joy— mine includes warm tea, a luxurious bath, skincare, and stretching so far.

Your evening can be reimagined too! Get creative and share your favorites below! Make it exciting and enticing so that you'll want to keep going.

Unwinding while keeping the play alive. Bedtime routines can turn into a game of tug-o-war, feeling like a battle to win. Here are some tips for parents with kids...

1. Bedtime Story Game: Turn bedtime into an adventure by co-creating a story. Let your kids invent characters or plot twists—it’s fun, engaging, and builds creativity without the energy of jumping around.

2. Music to Unwind: Play soothing music while you wind down as a family. It’s a small add-on that can signal the day’s end and bring a sense of calm if used intentionally.

3. Gratitude Circle: Take turns sharing one thing you’re grateful for. It helps everyone reflect on the positives of the day.

Last week, I shared some thoughts on adding play to your mornings to start the day with connection and joy. That got me thinking: what about the other bookend of the day—the evening? After a long day, how we wind down sets the tone for a peaceful night and better rest.

And here’s the thing: play doesn’t always have to be high-energy or exciting. It can also be soothing and restorative. Whether you’re living with a partner, roommates, kids, or just yourself, evening play offers a unique way to connect and relax.

Why Play at Night?
Incorporating gentle play into your evening isn’t just a way to unwind; it’s a chance to deepen your bonds, reflect on the day, and find joy in the moment. By focusing on connection, these activities can help you transition from the busyness of the day to the calm of the night. Stay tuned this week as I offer some ideas for how to do this!
