Springfield cat Miss Sassy ranks up there with Chicago’s Mrs. O'Leary's cow as animals that caused widespread havoc.
Miss Sassy was the Springfield cat that was reported missing and eaten by Haitian neighbors.
Mrs. O’Leary’s cow was accused of kicking over a lantern and starting the Great Chicago Fire.
BOTH STORIES ARE FALSE.
Miss Sassy was found alive and well in her basement. Many politicians spread the lie of immigrants eating pets. The effect has been negative for the entire city of Springfield especially the immigrants living there.
The reporter that initially broke the O’Leary story said he made it up 22 years later. It is said that Mrs. O’Leary died heart broken in 1895 as she was constantly blamed for the fire.
The O'Leary family were scapegoats of anti-Irish sentiment in 1871 just like the Haitians are scapegoats of anti-immigrant sentiment in 2024.
Lies and words have consequences.
