My Story
Mike Eye is a DJ and producer from Johannesburg, with an obsessive love for music. Mike's father had a pivotal role in his early formative years exposing young Mike to his jazz vinyl collection he collected with his late grandfather and then later to his tape and CD collection.
Mike's first exposure to Electronic music came from his Dad's CD collection in the form of Ministry Of Sound Chilled House Sessions Vol 1.
The 4/4 rhythms and melodic progression captivated him more than anything else he had heard before. Since then dance music had taken a stronghold of him.
Early DJ experimentation took place when Mike started making mixtapes for friends and family on a DJ mixing software on his dad's computer. Within weeks Mike was compiling mixes, often three to four hours in length, and distributing them to anyone who would listen. Fast forward 6 years and Mike was distributing out his mixes and getting a few to be aired on local podcast stations and radio shows, this gave Mike the confidence to take on his first gig at eighteen years of age. He started playing a monthly party at a local pizza cafe, with DJs rotating time slots every month. This allowed Mike to play all the different types of sets that go into forming a coherent club night.
Moving to Durban officially kick-started Mike Eyes DJ brand. He held a 2-year residency at Durban super club, Origin, regularly playing alongside some of the best DJs and acts in SA.
Contact with the Durban underground scene was made by being exposed to the ALTR Techno Collective who hosts small but musically uncompromising parties in the city. The collective saw massive potential in Mike and welcomed him to their line up at every chance. After spending time with the ALTR crew Mike decided to make a definitive paradigm shift in his music.
Upon his move back to Johannesburg in late 2018, Mike has focused his sound to Dub Techno, Minimal House and Deep Techno and crossing through the respected sub-genres.
This focused approach to his sound and staying true to himself, led him to opportunities of playing alongside the likes of Luke Taylor, DJ Hara, Ady Flemming, Terry Aronis, 2lani The Warrior, 2sman, Cody Losper and as well as his highlight set of 2018, opening for Craig Placid.
Playing with emotion and purpose Mike's sets are thoroughly felt on the dance floor and have an effortless way of connecting with the dancers. With a great understanding of time and place, Mike has a sharp ear and his track selection makes him stand out with the best in the industry.
