i know i've been moaning a bit about how things are still up in the air gigs wise and how the economics of going out is still shifting and changing and all that lark.. then i do friday night at KOKO finishing up the night after the iron glove and Man Power took a rammed young crowd to the cleaners!! had all the intentions of keeping it dark and dirty till the end but it was still packed so went for acid house, bangers, drums and big ones! MEGA fun.. definitely want to play at that nuts place again and again and again!! 5.30am outside as me and sassy went to go home and the crowd was still there.. fab!! really felt like something had happened. lets all go out again!! thanks to The Pool for hooking it all up ❤️

been ruminating further on things that are happening. mainly regarding djing and what it actually is and means to me. this year has been tough bookings wise as it has been for a lot of 'disc jockeys’ and as this is my ‘job’ taking a hit bookings wise does send you into a self reflecting spin about what am i doing ‘wrong’? am i just old and increasingly out of pace with the modern punter? tbh i don’t know, could it be about being a strong supporter of ‘palestine”? could it be that the modern dancer just isn’t going out that much - this is definitely a factor especially with festivals and club nights closing down everywhere. economics also move hand in hand with the ‘entertainment’ industry. but this situation, for me, has also been about direction and genre and those sort of things. on the whole up till now iv’e been booked for things that sort of straddle techno & house, dance floor sets, that type of affair. these are sets that i love to do and i always bring a wonky slant as well as the ability to read the room, which a lot of dj’s just don’t seem to want to do. a lot of dj’s don’t want to sacrifice their ‘brand’ to the party as a whole. it’s a weird flex and defiantly has come about because of things like social media, agents and management. when i dj b2b with chris as plu we read each thoughts and feels and are currently delivering a hard, sometimes almost industrial thing thats mixed up with that fast skippy ‘queer techno’ as well as lots of left of centre dancing gear and our family of plu cranks and lovelies want that. we deliver what they want and listen to them and we have all grown together and that is majorly fun to be a part of. elsewhere though i’m a lone gun, ronin without a master, dj without a crew and when im booked i sort of want to know explicitly what they want. i can do that by actually asking but also by checking out what have been doing and the sort of thing they a trying to do. it’s not rocket science to check these things out. a good vibe mechanic should be doing all those sort of things as well as thinking about the party as a whole from start to finish. thats why i also enjoy the warm up. always have always will do. i have a booking agent and over time they have suggested that i do calling card mixes and i see the sense in that and i have but really they sort of fall short as there’s no audience. no one dancing apart from me. i might try and record some sets live from the dance as a true refection of what i do in those situations. this brings me back to fibs and before that magical real my weekly shows i do for netil radio as these shows/mixes are up on soundcloud and mixcloud and there are loads. these shows are for me and for anyone on the same page as me. they are not about the dance floor, that much, and are about the things i listen to outside of bangers. sometimes these shows cross over into chug and banger territory but on the whole definitely more leftfield orientated. soundscapes and broadminded in selection. i’m not much of a fan of how the term 'balearic’ has panned out but it’s original ethos is definitely on my mind. they aren’t planned out, apart from the pulling of records and file sorting. and i’m usually picking from maybe 90-100 tracks each time. always off the cuff with very little emphasis on ‘perfect blends’ or ‘the build’. this weeks show feels like its going to be about ambience & tone. way left of centre and more of a head space type of deal. the photo is from last weekend’s amazing plu summer camp and the ambient bubble barn, where i played 5hours of seriously random krauty, dub, soul, ambient and industrial. join me on netil radio at 9pm tonight ❤️ netilradio.com the community fave very high above london fields ❤️

.. as part of this sea change thing that's happening for me and a break from the normality of my wonky, leftfield, ambient and generally wayward recorded output, i cut the first 2hrs out of a 4hr set of dancing music that had somehow, luckily been recorded and put it up on my soundcloud as a sort of 'calling card' mix of the sort of thing lovely people pay me to do... it's decidely non chuggy, fast (for me) and mid paced with seat of your pants blends and a strong trippy bent full of weirdo techno bangers and rough acid funkers, brand new things & old old things.. party music! a snap shot so to speak. no nonsense, full fat & non-zeitgeisty. if you need an uppy moment then dive in. i never post this sort of thing normally but new years and i'm stepping out of my comfort zone and all that.. book me via The Pool go go go!!! ace drawing from ❤️🪐🥁🍄🔺
