Introduction to Sewing

Never touched a sewing machine but always wanted to learn. Or perhaps the last time you sew were in High School and need a refresher on threading the machine. Taking our Beginner Sewing classes will get you to the beginner level in just 4 weeks! In this beginner class you will learn how to wind a bobbin, sew a straight line, and a variety of basic stitches to get you started on your sewing journey!

Skill Level: Beginner
From: 19th July, 2023
Max: 7 students
Location: Rooty Hill
Class Length: 4 x 2.5 hour sessions
Days - Wednesdays
Time - 4:00pm to 6:30pm
Cost: $285

Here is what you will learn….

Get sewing machine confident

Starting right at the very beginning, learn everything you will need to use a sewing machine for the first time.

• Anatomy of a sewing machine
• Winding on a bobbin
• Threading a top loading sewing machine
• Threading a front-loading machine
• Sewing machine driving test
• Essential sewing tools
• Basic trobleshooting

Introduction to sewing

Dive into sewing with these basic skills

• How to measure correctly
• Choosing fabric
• Understanding patterns
• Adjusting patterns
• Preparing your fabric
• How to correctly cut out your fabric


Project 1- Scrunchie

This easy hair piece is a great intro to sewing

• Pinning and cutting out from a pattern
• Learn a simple way to sew a straight line
• Create a simple casing
• Finish off with elasticated scrunch

Project 2 - Envelope cushion cover

Make a pretty envelope cushion cover in your second project.

• Measure and cut out the cushion cover.
• Construct the cushion cover
• Create a simple opening for the insert
• Creating a double folded hem
• Sewing simple seams
• Tidying of seams
• Bagging out your cushion cover

Project 3 - Pajama pants

Make the perfect pair of pajama trousers with an elasticated waistband and ribbon drawstring.

• Pin and cut out the pattern
• Learn a simple method of trouser construction
• Sew narrow double folded hems
• Finish off with an elasticated waist

• 500m spool of black & white thread / cotton
• Dressmaking Pins (Glass, Pearl, or Plastic head)

This next level will see you not only moving on to improving your Dressmaking & Pattern drafting skills, but also taking you to the next level of dealing with what I call "intermediate level of fabrics".

Completed our Improves Sewing Classes and want to expand on ypur skills even more? Or you might already know the basics of sewing as well as know introduction level of pattern drafting and dressmaking and, hoping to move on to the next level of our classes If that is the case, then this Intermediate Sewing Classes is for you!

Taking our Intermediate Sewing classes will see you working with the next level fabrics. Over the duration of 10 weeks, you will draft and sew....

>>> a princess line dress with a bit of variations to the skirt and sleeves

>>> a button-up ladies top without collar and

>>> basic ladies trouser or shorts ( not PJs )

In this Intermediate level classes, you will learn how to work on customised dressmaking orders. Use commercial patterns will be discouraged in this level. You will be encouraged to explore your creativity in dressmaking as you manipulate those darts, pleats, patterns, fabrics, etc. You will be working with invisible zippers, buttonholes and basic pockets in this level.

So.... are you ready to take your sewing to the next level of dressmaking and pattern drafting? I will work along with you to continue your sewing journey!

Introduction to Dressmaking & Pattern drafting

Completed our Beginners Sewing Classes and want to learn more? Or perhaps you already know the basics and would like to get to the next level. Taking our Improvers Sewing classes will get you to the next level in just 4 weeks! In this Improvers class you will learn how to work with simple commercial patterns, and basic pattern drafting so you can continue your sewing journey!


Included in the price of workshop:

Use of our sewing machines and overloackers if you don't have your own.

Cost: $350
Max: 8 -10 students
Location: Rooty Hill
Class Length: 8 x 2-hour sessions
Time: 6:30 to 8:30 pm

Prerequisite: Completed Beginners Sewing Classes or have prior sewing skills.

What is needed….

Fabrics for each project
Commercial patterns ( beginners or intermediate levels only)
Dressmaking pins (Glass, Pearl, or Plastic head)
Measurement tape
Tailors chalk
Matching coloured cottons/ threads along with Bobbins
Scissors
Extra sewing machine needles to have handy
Pens / Pencils
Note book to take down measurements

Here is what you will learn….

Use of commercial patterns
Pin and layout patterns
Draft a basic bodice
Draft a basic skirt
Working with zippers
Garment construction
Setting up and using an overlocker.

Learners will complete one project using basic or intermediate level commercial patterns and one project using the basic patterns drafted by themselves as well as work as a team taking measurements and completing fittings.
