August Client Spotlight: The Nickelodeon

As South Carolina’s only nonprofit arthouse cinema, The Nickelodeon has been a cornerstone of the regional arts scene for over forty years. Originating as a one-screen theater in a converted bank building, The Nick has become a major cultural anchor on Columbia’s Main Street, attracting over 40,000 attendees annually.

The Nick offers a diverse mix of first-run independent films, special curated series, and community-relevant one-off screenings. Committed to enriching the film-going experience, The Nick hosts pre- and post-screening discussions featuring experts and community members.

In August, The Nick will continue their ReelTalk film and discussion series. One is a foreign film focus with the 1983 Soviet-Italian drama film 'Nostalghia', and the other is a feature-length documentary about the trailblazers who became the first women to be ordained priests in The Episcopal Church, 'The Philadelphia Eleven'.

July Client Spotlight: Vancouver Q***r Film Festival

The annual Vancouver Q***r Film Festival (***rfilmfest) is the largest q***r film festival in Western Canada, and one of the longest-running arts festivals and organizations in Vancouver. VQFF curates films that illuminate transformative moments in the lives of q***r, trans, and Two Spirit people; spark meaningful dialogue around issues relevant to 2SLGBTQIA+ communities today; and catalyze change locally and globally. The Festival cultivates an 11-day celebration of stories made by and for 2SLGBTQIA+ people, centering authentic and empowering representation in media. VQFF now runs from September 11 to 22, 2024, drawing in the best and latest cinema from around the world, and expanding its educational youth programme with Out In Schools ().

VQFF and Out In Schools are core programs of the charitable organization Out On Screen. All year round, Out On Screen works to develop equity for 2SLGBTQIA+ communities through dialogue, inclusive films, and sexual orientation and gender identity education. May Client Spotlight: Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF)

VIFF is the home of film and film culture in Western Canada. Driven by passion and curatorial excellence, VIFF encourages understanding of the world’s cultures through the art of cinema. Founded in 1982, The Greater Vancouver International Film Festival Society is a not-for-profit cultural organization that operates the internationally acclaimed Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), which will take place this year from September 26 to October 6, and the year-round programming of the premiere art-house cinemas at the VIFF Centre.

With a complex and impactful festival and year-round program boasting over 1500 annual screenings and events, VIFF has become the most prolific and engaging cinematic entity in the region.

May’s roster includes Perfect Days. Widely acclaimed as Wim Wenders’ best fiction film since his glory days in the 1980s, the film is a humanist character study steeped in the director’s admiration for the cinema of Yasujiro Ozu. Another title to be featured is Evil Does Not Exist by Ryûsuke Hamaguchi. Hamaguchi quietly made this small-scale independent film, a work of simplicity and grace about a rural community and the developers who want to build a “glamping” retreat in the woods.

The VIFF Centre also hosts several special events, including the VIFF Live series, a fusion of film and live music that promises unmissable one-night-only performances. In May, VIFF will present Raagaverse Plays Bollywood. Raagaverse is an exciting Indo-Jazz fusion project spearheaded by Shruti Ramani, melding ancient and rich Hindustani melodies with dense and dynamic jazz harmonies. For this special show, Shruti will share clips from the legendary Bollywood musicals that inspire her, complemented by the band’s unique take on these songs.

February Client Spotlight: Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema 🎬

The Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema is Birmingham, Alabama's only non-profit independent movie theater - and is also home to the nationally-recognized Sidewalk Film Festival. Their mission is to encourage filmmaking audiences and build audiences for independent film - typically done in their themed film weeks and educational programs that happen frequently throughout the year.

This February, they're celebrating Valentine's Day a little differently...their Kiss 'Em or Diss 'Em Valentine's Spectacular (February 9 + 10) gives a chance for everyone to celebrate the season of love with romantic titles such as THE NOTEBOOK (2004) and UNromantic titles like AMERICAN PSYCHO (2000). They also celebrate Black History Month with Black Lens Film Week (February 21 - 25), a week-long celebration of Black Cinema both contemporary and classic. In March they host their Women In Film Week, another week-long celebration this time focusing on women's voices in film (whether they be directors, screenwriters, etc!).

In between these film weeks are regularly scheduled programming featuring the best titles in independent film as well as repertory classics.

It's no shock to anyone that the event ticketing industry is square in the sights of these potential changes. The larger and reselling platforms (those who have benefitted the most from high, unpredictable fees) are signaling their willingness to comply. We're seeing pledges for many of them to be able to support transparent pricing around next Summer. As an event organizer, it's about time to consider what this might mean for your business and how it's perceived.

Elevent is already onboard. Elevent clients now have the option to enable all-in pricing, either across the board or on selected shows. We are in alignment with what the Federal Trade Commission will mandate, and we've done so in a way that highlights to buyers the costs you face doing business--and the ways they can support you beyond just buying tickets and disappearing into the night.

We're mining data to help guide organizers if and when all-in pricing makes sense for you. Come talk to us about what's coming shortly and how to turn this into an opportunity to grow.
