Unintentional garden outfit coordination 🖤💜 this is the first bloom from Nikko blue hydrangea I started from a bareroot a couple years ago. Yes I could treat my soil with some aluminum to get bluer blooms, but I’m really loving this lavender pink color so I may just leave it! What do you think, should I go for blue or just leave it and see what happens next year? Also these are Apache thornless blackberries and I would 10/10 recommend it if you’re going to grow blackberries bc let’s be real thorns are the worst and this plant is about to explode with berries. I see many blackberry themed desserts in my future 💜🖤

After all the cooler temperatures last week, my dahlias are starting to come on! Fun fact of the day: dahlias are native to the mountains of Mexico and Central America where they thrive in the cooler elevations. They also are Mexico’s national flower. Que linda, no? Also fun fact: I studied Spanish in college and sometimes pretend like I speak Spanish but in reality I have the vocabulary of a 3 year old. Unless it comes to pushing out babies… I have learned a few key phrases out of necessity when I have Spanish speaking patients 😅

My first year growing dahlias, and I’m kicking myself for not starting sooner! These are a Walmart special here, don’t remember the variety, just an impulse buy that I’m pleasantly surprised by haha. I have these growing on the northwest corner of my garden, and they seem to appreciate a little shade, as my dahlias currently in full blazing sun next to the road have yet to start blooming 🤔 also planning to keep these overwinter in the ground and see what happens. Most people seem to dig their dahlia tubers every fall, but I’m feeling frisky and going to risk it to see how she does. Anyone have luck over wintering dahlias in 6b?

It’s almost June and the berry patch has been producing strawberries everyday since May 12! I’ve been dreaming of having my own berry patch but was always weary of Japanese beetles, rabbits, bugs and other problems I had learned to associate with them. So far I think part of my success has been related to growing three different varieties, growing under thorny raspberries to deter adorable hopping berry robbers, mulching with straw in the winter to prevent crown rot/freeze damage/keep berries off the ground, and keeping the berries picked to avoid attracting bugs. No fertilizer, no sprays, but sporadic watering when it decides to stop raining. Maybe it’s beginners luck? Honestly let’s not question it too much, don’t want to jinx the berries.

I have always fancied the classic pale pink Sarah Bernhardt peonies but Duchesse de nemours may be a close second… the smell is incredible and I don’t need to tell you how gorgeous they are!! What about you? Team pink or team white???

And no, I do not regret pinching off the blooms last year (first year bareroot) in order to get these abundant beauties this year.

First daffodil of spring 🤩 (in my yard anyways). I have to say spring flowers are some of my favorites, probably bc they come after winter and I’m so desperate to be out in the garden again… without 4 layers and frozen fingers lol. The key to making daffodils last in the vase is to pick them (yes pick, not cut) in the “gooseneck” phase… aka right before they open up. This will make them last a little longer indoors.

Good ol’ fashioned before and after, we closed on our first home almost exactly a year ago now and it has been so much fun. Making a home your own and a representation of yourself is truly so much fun! We are so grateful to be homeowners! Here’s to year two in the fox den 🤪💕🦊🦊💕

Summer blues… when it’s 95 and 100% humidity out but the days are getting shorter and kiddos are going back to school… but hey, the zinnias and cosmos are still poppin 😏 I say keep the summer weather coming Bc I’m not ready to let go yet 💕👏🏻

Currently fighting the urge to buy more plants…

Theses beauties are from the Biltmore estate gardens that we visited last May. This is “queen of Sweden” by David Austin. I’m thinking they might do well in SW Missouri since North Carolina tends to be hot and humid as well… not exactly conducive to healthy rose cultivation lol. But who can resist a soft pink rose… I certainly cannot 💕😅

Today I officially gave up the community garden plots I have been growing flowers on for the last 3 years 😢. I will never forget spending my spring break during nursing school hand digging 16x16 plots to get all the Johnson grass rhizomes out… in blustery March weather and then carting wheel barrow after wheel barrow of compost to try and add something of value to the rather bare “raised beds” I had rented. A lot of sweat and literal blood left in these beds, and tears when I saw my dahlias and sunflowers being eaten by bugs, not to mention entire plants and blooming flowers stolen from my beds 🥲

I say that to say anything worth doing is usually not easy. Gardening and growing things in Missouri is not easy, but it is so worth it. Now we have our own little piece of dirt with a privacy fence and plenty of space to grow flowers and other delights 💕. I’m so grateful for my first garden and will miss the urban farming environment (the sunsets were the best!) but am so thankful for our new home and yard. I’ve already had so much fun designing new garden beds and planting shrubbery! Here’s to a new adventure!

Handful of native ozarkian w**ds n’ leaves. 🍂 My grandpa calls these cranberry colored berries buckw**d, he says they are a w**d and cattle don’t care for them… I think they’re rather pretty though 🤗

Yes I’m one of those people who buys things based on the name. Nail polish? Yes. Lattes? Yes. Dahlias? Um yes. This is my first dahlia, I couldn’t wait for it to fully open so I cut it early 😂 it’s called “foxy lady” and as someone who recently married a Mr. Fox, I couldn’t resist 😉🤷🏼‍♀️

Take me back….

Since our vacation to Charleston I’ve been learning a lot about the city and it’s history, particularly about the Charleston Renaissance. A group of artists, musicians, and preservationists seemingly came out of nowhere during the 1920s. They took pride in their city and decided it was worth preserving. Artists depicted Charleston as the charming elegant city we know today, not how it really was then. Post civil war Charleston needed a major facelift as the people learned how to thrive without the intolerable business of slavery. But this group of artists and visionaries had the wisdom to preserve the historical beauty of their town that was well hidden behind the disheveled homes and abandoned storefronts. It would have been so easy to just tear down and start from scratch, or just abandon it all together. But they didn’t. And now we have the Charleston music/dance, rainbow row and countless other examples of impeccable architecture to admire. I think what I appreciate most about all this is the city’s ability to preserve their history yet also adapt and change for the better.

Peep me in the first dress I ever made... 🪡 humble brag I know 🙃. But really this was so much fun. I’d always messed around with sewing ever since I was a little girl... from hand sewing blankets/clothes from my mom’s quilt scraps for my playhouse dolls to making pillow covers for my college apartment. This year I kept seeing all these lovely midi dresses with ruffles and puffed sleeves all over insta and Pinterest and I desperately wanted one to where on our trip to Charleston. However I don’t have the budget of a fashion designer/influencer so I decided to make my own! I found a pattern at Joanns (which I ended up making changes to) and fabric online and set to work! Now mind you, by the time you count up the cost of fabric and the hours spent working on this it very may well be worth the x amount of dollars I wasn’t willing to spend... but I absolutely love this dress and loved making it. The linen fabric is so lightweight and breathable it was perfect for the day we spent in Asheville at the biltmore mansion! Several people said I looked like a princess and girl I definitely felt like it. Also it twirls beautifully... 😍 I’d encourage anyone thinking about giving dress making a shot to go for it! There are so many YouTube videos out there on how to do any technique it’s very doable. Plus with making this dress I was able to alter the bodice/skirt to fit my disproportionate body type and make sure everything fit perfectly. You just can’t get that at Ross’s lol 😆

We “lilac”ed our time in Michigan celebrating the beginning of a beautiful couple’s life together 🌿 it was the first time I made a bridal bouquet in a motel room, and Brady and I’s first time to Mackinac Island! I’m honestly just super excited we got to experience a second lilac season this year since the lilacs were in full bloom when we visited.... currently talking myself out of buying lilac shrubs for my non-existent yard...lol

I got these shades to match the peonies. Trying to be cool okay. Between working nights and the endless rain here I’m a little nervous in sunlight. Definitely will be hitting the jergens natural glow before Charleston tomorrow. Ps we are going to Charleston for our makeup honeymoon and I’m bursting with excitement!!!!!!!!!

also happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, soon to be moms, and women who want nothing more than to be moms. Where I work it’s easy to forget about how pivotal a child’s birth can be in a woman’s life. In labor and delivery I see new lives being born almost every night and take care of mommas through the entire process. Sometimes I forget that this is just another night at work for me but a life altering moment for them. How many prayers prayed for that child, how many tears cried over lost ones, how many anxieties over how to feed the ones she has at home waiting in addition to this new one... I’ll never know. But something I do know is that every moment is special and significant during our lives and to let something as significant as a new baby’s birth go on unrecognized for its significance and overall miraculous nature of it (birth is a crazy miracle y’all and there’s no doubt in that) is not okay.

So take this moment everyone to thank your moms. Be grateful for your life and the circumstances you find yourself in and cherish the moment. Be present. Sometimes it takes a pretty butterfly on some flowers to remember that.
