In March of last year, finally solar panels!

I started working on this in 2018 and here we are right around the corner from our first solar year with panels!

was great to work with, financing was easy and even at 48N latitude on an East-facing roof, the panels have been great for our energy budget and our bottom line. Especially once you add in the REAP grant funding.

Patience can be tough for me with farm building, but at least there is a benefit to a 6 year wait: the panels more efficient so more kW are generated from this system than we would have had earlier.

🥘 We eat together as a crew every day - sort of a lunch or brunch or “second breakfast” if you will.

Jay and I started up this daily crew meal because we were cooking for ourselves already and it felt odd to stop and cook hot food and NOT make an extra egg toast for our coworker.

Underlying this bit of our farm culture too is a belief in the amazing capacity of food to bring us together, to create and disseminate culture.

We continue to improve our on-farm veg production to keep our veggie growing chops tuned up and because it’s incredibly gratifying to grab a head of lettuce and some handfuls of herbs on the way into the kitchen and to share our work in the form of a meal, knowing we are getting some mineral-packed produce to help keep up our energy for this big work!

Phew! As we shift gears with the end of our main season, a hearty thanks to everyone that’s made this farm possible this year, especially the crew of farmers we’ve gotten to work with 💛

It’s been a huge year with lots of ups and downs and we’ve accomplished a lot: figuring out a new tunnel system, solar panels, loads and loads of flowers, a better dried program, shifts in staffing, more standardized policies and procedures, a farm tour…

It seems to take 10 years to get some solid foundations and as we wrap up Season 8, it is feeling really hopeful to be nearing the end of that period.

As we softly close the season in this larger environment of instability, may we strengthen and grow our communities 💚 It is such an honor to share this life of flowers and farming with our fellow farmers, our wonderful customers, with y’all out there appreciating the work and the blooms!

With gratitude,
Celeste and Jay

🥔 Tuber packing!

Lots of different ways to successfully store tubers over winter.

We pack mesh bags in kraft paper lined crates of lightly moistened pine shavings and put in the unplugged walk in cooler: door open if warm, door open if cool.

The result: clean, plump tubers ready to plant in spring!

Hint of frost a couple weeks ago, tbd how much longer we’re in the dahlias.

This small sea of 7000 plants has given us a lot this year and looks ready to keep going, especially given our hard cutting on it for over two months!

Now just have the small task of getting them dug before a hard freeze 😀

🍁October: beautiful days, finishable lists, saturated palettes!

This past week, we got a bunch of cover crop in, loads of flowers out to discerning humans, more dried flowers packed (& on the cusp of arriving : coming next week!). Even popped a few final perennials in the ground and weeded several beds.

In progress: barn and prop areas cleaned up, tulip bulbs on deck, dahlia final rogue n label, sweet pea seed processing……….

Frost is hovering around these days, but we’re still in flowers for the moment 💫

Phew! Farm tour ✅!

Thank you so much to everyone who made it out here and honored us with their presence and questions, my coworkers who help keep this ship running and looking good, without whom it never would have happened.

Real cool to get nitty gritty and honest on everything from rodents to profitability with y’all.

Here are pics of some spots where we’re currently giving good flower 💓

🎯 When we sold at the Farmer’s Market, we got asked all the time if we “just sold flowers.”

My translation of this is: do you grow vegetables?

My long answer is pinned, but in short: yup!

Do we do our best farming for the veggies? Abso-fricking-lutely not.

Do the plants still bless us with food, sometimes a crazy abundance 2 months after they should have been harvested? Often yes!

Beets for crew meal coming right up.

Or for a tablescape because these girls are gorgeous🔥

🌟 The stars of September:

Dahlias get more ground than any other crop we grow currently. We rotate them every year to lower disease and pest issues.

This year that meant ground that was pasture followed by two seasons of cover crop. & getting water to it!

They seem to be thriving here at the forest’s edge: dark foliage; long, strong stems; buckets of bunches daily.

Excited/nervous (ARE THEY THE SAME??) for the farm tour in two weeks!

As a working and still maturing farm, we don’t typically host tours, but thanks to the support of the ASCFG, we’re going to be looking at how we grow, dahlandia, the transplant process and tools we use, our water/irrigation systems; wash/pack situay, greenhouse/tunnel cultivation and more.

See you here? 🌸🌈💞
