How I became a cook

When it comes to food, I am spoiled rotten. You see, my mum was a brilliant cook. And yes, I know everybody thinks that about their mum, but mine truly was, so my taste buds developed pretty high standards.

Many years ago there was a TV ad, an animation, which showed a desperately thirsty man in a near faint state in the middle of the desert, when he suddenly comes across a bar, manages to crawl in and asks for a specific brand of sparkling water, which the bar does not have. So he crawls right back out. The catchline was: once you’ve tasted “(the name of the brand)”, nothing else will do. This pretty much sums up my attitude toward food: if it’s not damn good, I d rather go without.

So yes, when it comes to food, I am picky, I am fussy, and I will not compromise. And that is why I became a cook...
