The Canada Tulle Story

It all started with a cheap department store tutu. Our daughter wouldn’t remove it. She wore it EVERYWHERE. The only problem? It got destroyed quickly. Solution? Make her one! How hard can it be?

Making a tutu was not a challenge, but finding a safe, quality fabric that wouldn’t irritate her skin was more difficult than we could have imagined. All of the tulle available at the time was made overseas with a coarse, rough knit and harsh chemicals. There had to be a better option.

Tasked with the goal of finding superior, safe, softer tulle fabric, we did what anyone would do! We found a factory that has the equipment to produce tulle that met our high standards! What could possibly go wrong?

Canada Tulle was born! We took some of our savings, contracted our first shipment of tulle in March 2011 and built a website with hopes to sell enough of the original order to get back our investment and have some quality tulle to make a couple more tutus.

And it worked! While testing the website we got our first order! We didn’t even have product, we weren’t finished building the site, and had no methods for automated payment... but we were already selling our tulle.

We took over the basement of our home to start stocking the very first North American-made tulle available to Canadian customers. It had these terrible plastic wrappers that slipped off while packing them, the colour labels were very basic and only had the colour name with no other details... we stocked about 9 rolls of each and wondered how we would EVER sell that much product!

Very quickly, plastic shelving turned into stacks of boxes. Shipping boxes were being purchased in bulk. We were travelling to the factory every couple of weeks to pick up vanloads of new product... then van and trailer... then shortly tractor-trailers were pulling up at the house with skids of product! It was time for...

... a warehouse! We moved into our first warehouse just after a year in operation, finally giving us a proper loading dock, space for all of our product for easy packing, plus massive storage for overflow stock and incoming shipments. We had our basement back, and a fantastic new facility to service all of our customers!

By this time we began shipping our amazing tulle around the globe, with regular customers in the US, England, Russia, Hong Kong, Australia... Clearly there was a need for safe, quality tulle. We never stopped being a small home-grown family run business, however.

This whole business was started because of a little girl and her tutu! The kids were our mascot and helped where they could. The warehouse made a great race course to drive around in the Power Wheels ATV and Barbie Jeep. They learned to tell colour based on the tulle lineup.. “What colour is that bird?” “Dark chocolate with a shrimp tummy.”

Today we continue to focus on customers and family and run the business the same today as we did 7 years ago when we started. We may move into new facilities, change product line-ups, but we will always be true to how it all began: With a tutu.

Today we produce and distribute millions of yards of tulle to customers everywhere. We strive for the best customer service in the industry, the best quality products, and continue to be the small family business you’ve grown to know and love. As we approach our 7th birthday, we are unveiling some new branding, new images, a new feel. We are revitalizing, refining our focus, and livening things up a little!
