Music video "The Ballad of Billy Elliot" by Cage of Crows will run at about 18:26 this Saturday!

“It’s a warm afternoon, late spring. 1952, or thereabouts. A young William Elliott strolls out across the meadows near his humble home in rural Derbyshire. In the scented breeze, he picks wild flowers – a gift for his intended. Ox-eye daisies, meadow cranesbill, buttercups. With that nervous lump in his throat that we’ve all experienced, he knocks on her door. Maybe, just maybe, she would accompany him to the school dance?” (Based on a true story)
Pretty. Dark. Blue. These are the hallmarks of Cage of Crows’ music. Pretty melodies and mesmerising vocals underpinned with guitar, synth & a touch of the blues tell contemporary stories; darkly haunting, spellbinding alt-folk with a jazz-tinged, gothic vibe. “The Ballad of Billy Elliott” features on their debut EP “Demons”, which was released on 1st May 2023. “Demons” is available on CD and on all major streaming platforms. Cage of Crows are regular performers for Matlock Storytelling Café, alternative/micro festivals and local venues.

"Things Don't Change, They Just Evolve" By Lauren Green will be on roughly 18:05.

Six decades of family stories and personal histories are interwoven within “Things Don’t Change, They Just Evolve”, a short film that offers an insight into the untold and largely ignored lives of the British working class. Demeaning stereotypes are challenged and revised through a combination of psychedelic, humorous visuals, and documentary-style interviews, resulting in a vibrant celebration of working-class culture. Using an inside-out approach and exploring individual lives, the personal meets political – it calls to a wider issue of poverty and oppression caused by successive neoliberalist governments.

Music video of the song "The Trial of Lady C" by Jake in the Box will be playing around 16:28 on Saturday in the barn!

Poignant, nostalgic and hilarious in turns, Jake Thackray’s songs deserve a renaissance. Jake was an outstanding singer-songwriter; Ron Middleton and Paul Kearns performing as Jake in the Box continue to celebrate the work of this unique and sadly missed troubadour.

" Jew-'ish' " A documentary by Ruby Mortimer will be playing around 16:37 on Saturday!

This is the final project of Ruby's undergrad course in Anthropology and Visual Practices.
Jew-'ish' is a personal exploration in what it means to be of Jewish heritage, especially when you don't know much about Judaism. Ruby Explores this world through the three colours of her national flag:
WHITE looks into the question of whether jews are white.
BLUE is where Ruby learns about the religion, and struggles with patriarchal language.
RED is a dive into blood, politics and ancestral trauma.

Free-flowing music video 'Chased my Demons' by LeftyChris Band will be playing at around 17:35 on Saturday.

Leftychris originated as the solo project of Derbyshire based singer songwriter Chris Carr in 2017. The first Leftychris release was ‘Humble Moon’ (available online) and features an album of original songs performed, in the raw form, by just Chris on guitar and vocal.
In early 2020 Chris released his second studio album (self-titled) featuring guest musicians. It’s this foray into extending the lineup that laid the foundation for the ‘Leftychris Band’.
These days the solo project is no more, as the band has settled into the preferred outlet for Chris’ songs. The band is - Alex Ivanov on drums, Annie Botham on violin, Simon Ball on bass and Rosana Coll with co-vocal.
Since the expansion The Leftychris Band's emphasis is the live performance of the songs with the band applying a more ‘in the moment’ style to the structure of the songs. The interplay of instrumentation and genuine listening jammy feel make every gig different and every version of the same song variable.
The style has been said to be reminiscent of Tim Buckley’s in the 60s but with a lighter instrumental feel.
