d from the 80s hiphop movie ‘Beat Street’. He also drew inspiration from the likes of DJ Reminise, DJ Manchoo, Tha Abbott, P Money, Alphabethead. DJ Jayrasik now has over 20 years experience in the music industry, since entering the scene professionally for events at just 14 years old. He has worked alongside multitudes of local and international artists including L.A.B, Kora, Summerthieves, Katchafire, Sean Kingston, Ja Rule, T-Pain, Ashanti, Mya - just to name a few. Kia Ora All.

This has been in the back of my head for a little while now so thought why not share it. A little Monday knowledgeable fun fact for some of you out there. Bit of a long read but it's worth it.

***HIRING A DJ****

‼️When "YOU" The paying customer or for people out there in general who go out looking for DJs for your event. Weather its a Wedding, Birthday, Work doo etc. Please make sure you do your homework & background check your djs that you book. Don't just get anyone because old mate next door or your cousin knows a ✌🏽 DJ✌🏽 or because "my man is a DJ" because he owns a controller and a laptop and push a button or two.. Get recommendations from others that may have booked a certain DJ in the past. Check their social media pages also. That's a prime location of checking out their Mahi and what they do and what they're all about. I've heard a couple horror stories in my time of some DJs that charge the world and deliver a s**t job! Thats because they've talked it up so much, you are almost conditioned to believe The hype till s**t hits the fan on the night. Next thing ya know, You've just wasted x amount of putea.

‼️Some of us love what we do and take it serious. Some are just in it to look flash for the gram, some will do it for the money (cheap at that) and will deliver a s**t job. This is why it pays to Background check your djs. Same thing with DJ/Entertainment companies. Handy to have and some do great work. But again... In The Rocks voice "IT DOSEN'T MATTER 🤨" Background check! Make sure you are booking the right person for the job. Make sure you get your moneys worth. Do not allow them pull the wool over your eyes. Because this s**t does happen.

‼️Make sure you ask questions. What do you supply, What am I paying for exactly. Do you fit what I'm after. What sort of music do you play. For all you know, you could be having a country gig and hire a Drum & Bass DJ. It's like water and oil... It don't mix!!! (Pun intended)

‼️Now... For the higher end DJs. You pay top dollar for the best! Say no more! These are guys who have managed to be successful in the industry & built a name over the years. So without going into detail... The proof is in the pudding. But still... Background check again. Check what this DJ has done / does, Check the accolades. They don't lie! This why I'm a firm believer of SKILLS MATTER! Over likes & followers. You can spot the difference easy if you pay attention!

We have a good bunch of DJs right here in Aotearoa & over the ditch. Even on the world stage. Our 10x world champion lives here if you didn't know. Majority of us all know each other too! We have a really good DJ community here who are always willing to help out somehow, some way.

Again...

*Background Check
*Ask Questions
*Keep within your budget
*Be aware of who you book
*Listen to DJs mixes
*Check their social media pages
*Ask for recommendations
*Know who you are booking

I think that's it for that topic at the mo. If I missed something, feel free to comment your thoughts/ideas/agrees/disagrees 😊 And brush yo teef 😬

Chuurrr ✌🏽

Last Friday. I got invited by my good friends Talitha & Tukotahi to speak to the Year 11,12 & 13 students at Flaxmere College.

The main focus for me was not jumping on my tables for a jam or explaining how I came up in the industry. That's the same old generic s**t!

For this, I did not want to make it about me. I had to switch it up & change the narrative to make it about the students coming through their schooling years at the moment. Especially for the year 13's as they're about to embark out into the big world soon. Weather it is music they want to pursue or just another career option or starting a business, Learn the things outside of the schooling system.

My decks were there to give the students an idea of what my tools were that got me to where I am now. And now I want you guys to find your tools to help you in this world.

*If you are good at something, Hold on to it.

*If you find or have a skill set in something you love. Hammer it.

*Work as hard as possible.

*Learn as much as you can.

*Never stop learning new things.

*Knowledge is key. Always!

*Keep the knowledge bank full as possible.

*Ask questions

*Love your craft

*Invest in your craft

*Don't be afraid to make mistakes.

*Admin stuff , Taxes, Invoices & everybody's favorite friends...IRD 🙄

*Protect your time & energy

*Don't hang out with Di*****ds or people that will drain you physically & mentally.

*Don't rely on others too much. Try to avoid it if possible.

*Mental Health is important

*Its all on you to make it happen.

These were the topics squeezed into a hour sitting. These were the things that were never taught growing up. Had to learn it all along the way. Trial & Error and a couple IRD bills later lol 😆 ITS ALL LEARNING.

I'm pretty blunt when it comes to this sort of kaupapa. I tell it how it is because it ain't all sunshine & flowers when you go out on your own.

And then we finished off with the fun stuff. Jam on the decks & questions about DJ'ing to end our korero.

And now I want to go back to my old high school Hastings Boys' High School and other Kura and spread the same Korero.

Not another bro gone 😞

I just want to send a massive huge shout out to this guy here. Unfortunately we never got to meet in person or do a show together .(F**k You Kovid) We almost got there but didn't which sucked. This guy here has been a follower of my work for years. In social media land you start to figure out who is who in the game so a lot of us DJs know each other or have heard of each other through Gigs, Music, Mixtapes, collabs, Other DJs etc... This guy was a big supporter of mine. A true one, An actual one at that! He was based out in London these last few years and willing to throw me on one of his shows in Auckland! We actually talked alot online, Messaged each other for random chats & gig stuff, have a little goss and even had some video chats with him. That's the closest we got to meet! Even though we didn't get to meet in person. I felt like I knew you since forever! The connect was real! I could tell from a mile away, This guy is a topman! No negative energy from him at all. Always positive about things and people he cared about. I can tell by everyone's posts I've seen recently that you are one of kind. Big love to your whānau brother. You will be missed!

Thank you for the chats over the years and being a real one!

Rest in love King 👑

Bit of a Monday night story time for you all 🙂
And a laugh at my expense lol

So since everyone is on this guy's cowboy hat from the past week, Rocking cowboy hats & boots for one or two nights of the year.

Ive never told this to anyone so I thought I'd share my encounter i had with him from 2023. Keep in mind i was a late comer to the reggae circles. I have a Hiphop/RnB & Turntablism background. I picked up on reggae songs real late or from friends and others listening to songs and I'd ask "who sings this?

Anyway... 2023
Waiting in the foyer area at the accommodation waiting on J Boog & his wifey to get ready so we could head out to go grab parakuihi before we parted ways. I'm hanging out just chillin on the couch. This guy is there too just hanging out. So to kill time, I rock up and strike a korero with this dude. I love the Hawaiian people. They're beautiful souls and just amazing people. Good musos too! So me being me wanted to chat to this Hawaiian guy.

I introduce myself and vice versa. He obviously gave me his real name (which i still don't know to this day 🤦🏽‍♂️)

Silly me ask this fulla in ya typical hori voice. Which band are you in bro ? What do you play? Thinking he was just a band member from one of the bands. He smirked a little and had a little giggle. Me being oblivious to the whole thing and not clicking, I was sitting next to greatness! One of the biggest Reggae artist in the world. And just talked his ears off whilst he just played it cool. Very humble our Hawaiian whānau! Wasn't till I heard some random walk by and go... "OMG there's Maoli" and comes over to take a photo with him. Here's me sitting there. I don't know weather to Laugh or feel embarrassed or what. I even offered to take this Random persons photo for her just to blend in and act cool like I knew who I was talking to lol.

By this time, J Boog had come down and that was my cue to dip and bolt out the door. With a quick "Chur bro, nice to meet you" On the way out. Fancy having a good old yarn to some random Dude from Hawaii thinking he was a band member to later finding out...

This is MAOLI you bolo 🤦🏽‍♂️

First tutu for the year. My sat nights are looking like this now days if I'm not out DJ'ing.
Some drum cardio with some old school shapeshifter. Rough as hell but that's what happens when you not actively on the drums! Need to break the habit!
