When I first started out, I noticed that as I gained popularity, there were fewer people who looked like me in positions of power. A pivotal moment for me was witnessing a conflict between two prominent Black jazz musicians in a high-end jazz magazine. It was disheartening and left many of us feeling uneasy. It reminded me of a scene in *Django Unchained*, where a white slave owner forced two slaves to fight for his amusement. Realizing that this was how the industry operated, I promised myself I would never become a victim of it.

Fast forward to today, and while some of those dynamics still exist, musicians now have the ability to connect directly with their audience, bypassing the gatekeepers who once stifled so many careers. Institutions like DownBeat, Jazziz, and the Grammys have lost their stronghold over the industry, thanks to social media. I’m grateful for this democratization of music, allowing the public to decide what resonates with them.

Last night in San Antonio I looked out and saw a diverse crowd (Blacks Hispanics and Whites ) . I smiled and thought to myself “now this is music “.
