On this day in 1606, a new chapter began in Sikh history.
Guru Arjan Dev Ji, knowing that Their physical end was near, prepared the Panth for a future that would require strength alongside spirituality. Before answering the emperor’s summons to Lahore — from which They would not return — Guru Ji passed the divine light of Guruship to Their son, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji.
On Jeth Vadi Ashtami (May 1606), Guru Ji called for Baba Buddha Ji and Bhai Gurdas Ji. They asked if the Sahibzada was ready. Baba Buddha Ji replied, “Your light lives within them. They will be a great warrior, a bearer of arms.”
Guru Ji stood with joy, holding a coconut and five coins. They circled Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji three times and bestowed Guruship, placing Their divine light into the young Guru. Baba Buddha Ji then applied the saffron and sandalwood tilak — the sacred mark of leadership.
Before leaving, Guru Ji entrusted the Guru’s house to five devoted Sikhs and departed for Lahore with five more — where They embraced martyrdom with unshakable peace, sitting on a burning plate as hot sand was poured upon Them.
Guru Ji’s final message:
“Do not mourn for us. Sing praises of Waheguru. Meet Guru Hargobind with joy. The time has come to rise. Take up arms. Sit upon the throne. Establish righteousness. Build an army. Destroy falsehood. Defend the truth.”
With this, the path of Miri-Piri was born — a revolution of spirit and strength.
From silence to shastar,
From sehaj to sovereignty,
From sacrifice to Sant-Sipahi.
This was not the end.
This… was Gurta Gaddi.
