FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Tucson, AZ.—Mayor and Council voted tonight to approve the recommendation to rename the Tucson Police Department Rincon Substation to the "Erik D. Hite Eastside Substation". Officer Hite lost his life on June 2, 2008, a day after being shot while responding to a distress call involving a Pima County Sheriff's Deputy.

"Officer Hite made the ultimate sacrifice for our city. Now Tucson will honor his service by ensuring his memory lives on in a place that embodies his sense of duty to his community and to the Department," said Tucson Mayor Regina Romero.

Officer Hite was assigned to the Rincon Substation during his more than four years with the Tucson Police Department. Having retired from the Air Force after 21 years of service, officer Hite chose Tucson as the place to continue serving his community and raising his family.

"My heart is overwhelmed," said Nohemy Hite, wife of fallen officer Hite and Chief Executive Director of the Erik Hite Foundation. "This dream of renaming the Eastside station where Erik served has become a reality thanks to Mayor Romero's desire to honor and preserve Erik's memory. I am beyond grateful for making this opportunity happen for Erik and for our family."

After graduating the Instructor Course, Officer Hite became a Police Instructor in 2007 assisting new police recruits with their training. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2007 earning his Bachelor of Science Degree from Park University.

"I'm pleased that Mayor and Council has approved naming the Rincon substation in honor of fallen TPD Officer Erik Hite," said Tucson Police Chief Chad Kasmar. "This means a great deal to Erik's family, his spouse Nohemy, daughter Samantha, and son Roy, and it means a great deal to his TPD family. Today’s decision ensures Officer Hite's sacrifice in the line of duty will not be forgotten."

The substation located at 9670 E. Golf Links is the second building named after a fallen police officer. A dedication ceremony will take place at the substation on June 2, 2022 at 8:00a.m.
