THE JUGGERNAUT JOURNAL Q & A INTERVIEW
Our featured guest: Mark Moats of INHERENTLY LOST
Summary of feature band or artist:
Industrial-infused progressive black metal outfit Inherently Lost (Youngstown, OH) returns with a dark and powerful new single and music video, "Art of Corruption" released May 2, 2025 via Entwined Recordings. This marks a major milestone for the band, as the single serves as the title track from their highly anticipated upcoming full-length album.
Blending the cold mechanical pulse of industrial, the dynamic intricacies of progressive metal and the emotional intensity of melodic black metal, Inherently Lost delivers a sound that is as genre-defying as it is soul-piercing. Fans of Jinjer, Type O Negative, and Moonspell will find themselves immersed in a cinematic landscape of crushing riffs, soaring dual vocals, and apocalyptic atmosphere.
“Art of Corruption” offers a brutal yet thought-provoking reflection on humanity’s descent into moral decay, merging the band’s signature sonic chaos with deep lyrical introspection. The accompanying music video visually captures the band’s apocalyptic vision, drawing the listener even deeper into their dystopian world.
“In a world filled with endless consumption, it’s not hard to imagine why we are all Inherently Lost,” reflects frontman and producer Mark Moats, who also engineered the track under the Entwined Recordings banner.
Since their debut EP 'Our Last Midnight' dropped at the onset of the global pandemic in March 2020—eerily prophetic in its themes - Inherently Lost has built a reputation for their genre-bending approach and uncompromising artistic vision. From magazine features in Germany’s Legacy Magazine, Metal Hammer Portugal, and Zero Tolerance UK, to radio appearances on 100.7 WMMS The Buzzard’s “2 Hours To Midnight”, the band has steadily gained a loyal international following.
Members: Mark Moats (Vocals/Synth/Keyboards) - Noreen “Ice Queen” Javersak (Vocals) - Joe Matijasic (Guitars) - Andrew Salzano (Bass) - Mikey Woolard (Drums)
Q1: What drives you creatively when you make your music!?
Mark: "Writing music for me is totally freeing. Having an outlet where you write what you want, say what you want, is real art. If you listen to our catalog so far, you will hear we try to write each song in a different structure. We do this to keep it fresh for ourselves and the listener. We definitely are not a “scene” band in any aspect."
Q2: Who influenced you (or who's your greatest inspirational influence) to get into the local music industry!?
Mark: "If we are starting with local inspirations, I would have to go all the way back as a kid hearing Nine Inch Nails for the first time. 'The Broken' EP really registered with me as a kid. Trent Reznor originally being from a town 30 minutes or so from me, then reaching success out of Cleveland was definitely a local inspiration."
Q3: From a business perspective, what are you looking forward to creating for yourself (selves) as a band or artist!? (i.e. future plans)
Mark: "We are finally going to release our follow up to the 'Our Last Midnight' EP (2020) with the 'Art Of Corruption' album. I say “finally” due to changing plans for our single releases for the album. The first single was "Unraveling Sanity", then "Intoxication Of Pain" (both have lyric videos), and most recently the title track "Art Of Corruption" accompanied with a music video. We also have 2 covers "Red Hot" by Motley Crue and "Through My Eyes" from Vision Of Disorder that won’t be on the album officially, but are additional singles out in the digital world."
Q4: Where do you see yourself (selves) in 10 years from now in the local music industry!?
Mark: "10 years is a long time…. Obviously most dream of making enough money to live on, however I am realistic and know that everyday it gets harder for anyone to be financially successful with their art. In any event, I will still be playing music. No one can stop me."
Q5: What's your greatest accomplishment to date!?
Mark: "Releasing albums with my previous bands Orwellian out of Youngstown and Torso Murder out of Cleveland along with the 'Our Last Midnight' EP by Inherently Lost. The "Art Of Corruption" music video is pretty badass too."
You can watch that here: https://youtu.be/dSoVARc6bZk
Q6: If the opportunity arose, who would you want to collaborate with on a song together!?
Mark: "I would have to say Mark Hunter from Chimaira and Jeff Hatrix from Mushroomhead. Tim “Ripper” Owens formerly of Judiest Priest/Iced Earth, has recorded guest vocals for the album version of the song Our Last Midnight. This will be released with 10-11 tracks on the 'Art Of Corruption' Album this Fall/Winter."
Q7: What's more important, in your opinion...winning music awards/accolades OR building a strong fan base following...and why!?
Mark: "Building a strong fan base 100%. Having a strong fan base means you are selling merchandise and people are attending shows on a regular basis, which generates income to lessen or replace out of pocket expenses. Music awards these days are usually fixed or more about who is better at being a social media guru versus the actual music itself."
