In the westernmost banner of Inner Mongolia, in the middle of the Gobi Desert, there once stood a prosperous kingdom. It was a center of religious learning, of art and a trading hub.
According to one of the many Mongolian legends, the first descendants of the gods built Khara-Khoto, a beautiful and rich city, which housed sages, merchants, brave soldiers and skilled craftsmen.
Khara-Khoto means "black city". It was a Medieval Tangut fortress on the Silk Road, built in 1032 near Juyan Lake Basin.
The remains show 9.1 m-high ramparts and 3.7 m-thick outer walls.
It became a centre of Western Xia trade in the 11th century.
In The Travels of Marco Polo, Marco Polo described a visit to a city called Etzina or Edzina, which was identified with Khara-Khoto.
The walled fortress was first taken by Genghis Khan in 1226. It continued to flourish under the Mongols and during Kublai Khan's time it was expanded.
After 1372 it was abandoned.

The Shimshal Pass. This 4735m crossing lies on the Central Asian watershed, and is of huge geopolitical significance. It gives easy access to what is now Pakistan from Xinjiang in China, which is literally a few kilometres away down the Braldu. This shot is of the final approach to the pass from Shujerab and Abdullah Khan Maidan. There is a large, pristine lake right on the pass. It is a sensational place!

A short but steep hike of 4.5 kms from the stunningly beautiful Chopta Valley in Garhwal Himalayas takes you to Tunganath Shiva temple at an altitude of 12,074 feet. It is known to be the highest Shiva temple in the world.

The trail and the slopes are covered in thick blanket of snow in the winter months and the arrival of spring season turns it into a place dotted with densely stunning rhododendron flowers in shades of red and pink, both on the trees and the walking trail (fallen ones).

While the rhododendrons do not survive beyond 4 weeks, the arrival of summer season followed by the monsoons, turns the slopes into velvety green interspersed with wild mountain flowers in riot of colours.

Mount Everest, locally known as Sagarmatha in Nepal and Chomolungma by the Sherpa and Tibetan people, is the climbers’ ultimate mountaineering destination. Its climbing history dates back to 1921, when the first Everest expedition team could reach 7000 meters from the Tibet side. In the 1924 Everest expedition, two climbers Leigh Mallory and Andrew Irvine, perished 500 meters below the Tibet side’s summit. Still today, it is a topic of discussion whether they reached the summit or not and remains one of the biggest mysteries in climbing history. There were several unsuccessful attempts between 1921 and 1952; on 29 May 1953, Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary stood on Everest’s Summit through the southeast route from the Nepal side. Since then, climbers worldwide have been fascinated to achieve the greatest glory of the mountaineering world.
