For nearly a decade, Inglewood’s American Legion Post 82 hosted H***y Tonk Tuesday Nights, where country and western fans can listen to live music from The Cowpokes and learn to two-step. Due to the growing popularity of the weekly event, organizers moved the event down Gallatin Road to Madison’s East Side Bowl, which offers more parking and a larger dance floor. On August 6, H***y Tonk Tuesday Nights celebrated its nine-year anniversary and broke in its new venue with headliner Sierra Ferrell.

An estimated 200,000 purple martins descended on the parking lot of Nissan Stadium. Warner parks hosted a bird watching party to witness the annual migration event. Nashville has been a roosting point for the migrating birds traveling towards South America.

Busy week in Nashville:
1: Metro CM Sandra Sepulveda confront a hate group that have been disruptive during invocation of Metro Council on July 16, 2024.
2: Counter protesters confront the hate group at the metro courthouse causing authorities to empty the gallery.
3: Signs protesting the hate group who have been removed from Metro Courthouse.
4-6: The following day, a candlelight vigil was held at Public Square honoring the late Civil Rights leader Rev.James Lawson who passed earlier this year.
7-8: Nashville opens its first permanent-supportive housing facility for people experiencing homelessness, Strobel House. The 5-story, downtown building was named after Father Charlie Strobel.

The plaza outside the Nashville Courthouse was named after Civil Rights activist Diane Nash. In the early 1960’s, she organized with local college students, like John Lewis, in Sit-in protests and the Freedom Riders. In 1961, Nash confronted the mayor of Nashville on these same steps with the question “Do you feel it is wrong to discriminate against a person solely on the basis of their race or color?”, the mayor admitted that he did. Restaurants were desegregated three weeks later.

Alphonso Anderson II, owner of Big Al’s Deli & Catering in 2024 for Nashville Business Journal. I was fortunate to photograph Alphonso in 2016 for Local Table magazine. Big Al’s has been open for over 10 years in the Salemtown neighborhood. Great food and great service.
