UltraTech Cement Ltd. is pleased to announce a partnership with UCLA’s Institute for Carbon Management (ICM) to pilot the groundbreaking Zero Carbon Lime (ZeroCAL) technology, designed to nearly eliminate CO₂ emissions from limestone decomposition in cement production. By establishing a demonstration plant at one of its units, UltraTech becomes the first company to implement ZeroCAL at scale, supporting its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

“As an industry leader, UltraTech is constantly exploring partnerships to decarbonise cement manufacturing,” stated Mr. K.C. Jhanwar, Managing Director of UltraTech Cement. Professor Gaurav Sant, director of ICM, added that ZeroCAL’s technology also generates clean hydrogen and oxygen for kiln heating, offering a transformative approach to carbon-neutral cement production without the need for carbon capture and storage.

Let’s Tidy Up One of the World’s Dirtiest Industries

Sebastian Manhart dives deep into one of the biggest climate challenges we face—reducing emissions in the construction industry—in his article featured in Carbonfuture Magazine: "Building a Greener Future: How Carbon Removal and Policy Will Decarbonize the Construction Sector."

The Challenge: The construction industry is responsible for over a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, with concrete alone accounting for a staggering 7%. Since many of these emissions are hard to eliminate through traditional means, carbon dioxide removal (CDR) could be a game-changer.

Innovative Solutions: To tackle this, companies like neustark, Paebbl, CarbonCure Technologies, ecoLocked, CarStorCon® Technologies GmbH, Solid Carbon, and Verde Resources Inc. are pioneering technologies that capture and permanently store CO₂ in materials like concrete and asphalt, making buildings a part of the solution instead of the problem.

The Role of Policy: But technology alone isn’t enough. Manhardt highlights the need for supportive policy, specifically through:
- EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) – to incentivize lower emissions
- Public Procurement – to drive demand for low-carbon materials
- Building Regulations – to ensure standards align with net-zero goals

The European Union has achieved a significant milestone in climate action, with greenhouse gas emissions falling by 8.3% in 2023. This reduction marks one of the largest declines in recent decades, driven by a strong shift toward renewable energy, which now powers nearly 45% of the EU’s electricity.

A report from the European Commission highlights sector-wide improvements, including a record 16.5% drop in emissions from power and industrial sources, alongside reductions in building, agriculture, and transport sectors. However, the increase in aviation emissions by 9.5% underscores the continued challenges in certain areas.

Commissioner for Climate Action Wopke Hoekstra noted, "The EU is leading the way in the clean transition. As we head into COP29, we are demonstrating to our international partners that it is possible to take climate action while continuing to invest in economic growth."

The EU’s ambitious goals, set by the European Climate Law, aim for climate neutrality by 2050, reinforcing its position as a global leader in sustainable development.

Cemex Reports Strong Q3 Results Amid Challenging Conditions

Despite adverse weather and FX volatility, Cemex delivered a solid Q3 with an EBITDA of US$747M and Net Sales of US$4.09B. Notably, Net Income surged over 200%, driven by strategic pricing and portfolio optimization. Cemex's CEO highlighted recent $2.2B in non-core divestitures, fueling growth investments, particularly in the US.

Cemex also made strides in decarbonization, securing €157M for a major carbon capture project in Germany. With steady progress on climate goals and sustainable innovation, the company is building a better future.

Holcim has secured a prestigious EU Innovation Fund grant for its carbon capture and storage (CCUS) project, CarboClearTech, in Martres-Tolosane, France. This recognition marks Holcim’s seventh large-scale EU-supported CCUS initiative, advancing the European Green Deal and positioning Holcim as a leader in sustainable building solutions.

Miljan Gutovic, CEO, stated: “We are committed to achieving net-zero cement and concrete at scale this decade. This grant underscores the strength of our technology and partnerships, enabling us to lead the way in clean construction solutions.”

The EU Innovation Fund, one of the world’s largest programs for clean technologies, selected 85 innovative projects this year. Holcim’s CCUS technologies, along with its fossil fuel-free energy and circular solutions, are key levers driving the company’s net-zero ambitions. Through Holcim MAQER Ventures, the company also collaborates with hundreds of startups to scale disruptive tech for a more sustainable future.
