Dear Mr Rahman, 🌹
You are a highly respected and adored musical talent. we take great pride in you and your creations. But in this “Karar oi louha kopaat” rendition, you have done a grave error.
This is a hugely revered patriotic song composed by Bengal’s immortal poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. In pre-independence India, tens of thousands of freedom fighters marched in protest against the oppression of the British, enthused by this song on their lips and in their hearts. They were not only Bengali-speaking citizens, but even the non Bengalis were swayed by the patriotic fervor of the lyric and tune of this death-defying song. Many of them overcame all mortal fear by singing this stirring anthem and smilingly embraced their final end on the gallows.
Songs composed by such venerated poets/lyricists of yesteryears such as Rabindranath Tagore or Kazi Nazrul Islam or Tulsidas or Amir Khusrau cannot be distorted from their original tune. No one should commit such sacrilege. One just cannot alter Narsinh Mehta’s “Vaishnava jana toh” or Allama Iqbal’s “Sare jahan se achchha”.
You are a prolific composer with unbounded talent. You have strong authority and influence in the industry. Any lyricist will be only too happy and will feel honoured to compose a song for you. You have absolutely no need to borrow lyrics from the sacred and historic repository of Bengal.
To honor the sacrifice of our freedom fighters who were inspired by this song, kindly withdraw your rendition of “Karar oi louha kopaat” in Pippa.
