Great HBCU History!

The late Alonzo "Jake" Gaither was born 119 years ago today. Gaither is pictured below giving his team a halftime speech during the 1964 Orange Blossom Classic. Long before the Universities of Miami, Florida and Florida State were winning national championships, Gaither's Florida A&M Rattlers were the first true college football powerhouse in the state. Gaither's career record was a remarkable 204-36-4, including 6 black college national championships from 1945 to 1969. His recruiting philosophy was simple. He wanted players who were "agile, mobile and hostile." In a time when Florida's major universities were segregated, Florida A&M had assembled teams made up of the finest African-American athletes in the state. During the Gaither era, Florida A&M produced 36 All Americans and sent 42 players to the NFL-- including hall of famers Willie Galimore and Bob Hayes.

Every December from 1947 to 1978, Florida A&M hosted a post season game at the Orange Bowl known as the Orange Blossom Classic. During a time of segregation, the game was Black Miami's version of the Orange Bowl Classic. Parades and festivities were held in Overtown and Liberty City during the week of the game. The Orange Blossom Classic also drew thousands of white spectators. Many came to see the extravagant halftime shows, featuring the Florida A&M marching. band.

The Rattlers were consistently among the best teams in black college football at the time and would invite the highest ranked black college team to play them in the Orange Blossom Classic. The game reached its peak of popularity during the 1950s and early 1960s. Many of football's greatest players played in the Orange Blossom Classic including hall of famers, Bob Hayes (Florida A&M), Willie Davis, (Grambling), Willie Lanier (Morgan State), Leroy Kelly (Morgan State), Charlie Joiner (Grambling, John Stallworth (Alabama A&M), Harry Carson (South Carolina State) and Willie Galimore (Florida A&M). Jake Gaither passed away on February 18, 1994. He was 90 years old.
