Dr. Aimee Vaniglia passed away December 1st after 9 months in hospice. She famously survived brain cancer for over 24 years (5 tumors, 4 surgeries) and uterine cancer, completed medical school after tumor #1, gave birth to 3 children, went into private practice for several years, returned to practice part time, wrote her memoir (Beloved and Brain Cancer), wrote a children’s book, then had to retire a few years ago.

She was brilliant, extraordinarily compassionate, and never lost her brutal sense of humor…a literal force of nature. She packed as much life into this life as she possibly could and she wil be missed forever.

Aimee granted VoxFem Network a series of two interviews about living with terminal illness. It was her hope that her story could help others who faced similar diagnoses.

VoxFem Network permanently featured , Dr. Aimee Vaniglia, passed from this life peacefully yesterday morning. She famously survived brain cancer for over 20 years (5 tumors, 4 surgeries) and uterine cancer, completed medical school after tumor #1, gave birth to 3 children, went into private practice for several years, returned to practice part time, wrote her memoir (Beloved and Brain Cancer), and published a children’s book.
Progression of the 5th tumor forced her to retire from practice a few years ago.

She was brilliant, extraordinarily compassionate, and never lost her brutal sense of humor…a literal force of nature.

We were honored that Dr. Vaniglia gave us a series of two interviews documenting her struggles and insights from living with a terminal illness, planning for death and, at the end, seeking closure with her young children.

It was her hope that her story might help others facing similar diagnoses.

The most recent interview is below.
The first interview is in the comments.

Clans: Tłááschí’í (Red Ochre on Cheeks People) Nishłi
Naahiłií (African American) Bashishchiin

Nakai Diné’é (Mexican People Clan) Dashicheii/ Maternal Grandparents
Naahiłií (African American) Dashinali/ Paternal Grandparents

The term Naahiłií was passed down to Radmilla from a Diné practitioner when I inquired about a more positive, respectful, and empowering term to identify our relatives who I am born for, the African Americans. The following is the Diné description of the term Naahiłií / Nahiłií:

“Na(a)” - Those who have come across

“hił (slash in the l)” - dark, calm, have overcome and persevered

“ii” - oneness

Pilot episode in Real Time

In this pilot episode of VoxFem, launched on International Women's Day 2018, we feature the work of women songwriters and innovators Miriam Pérez (Puerto Rico), YEGNA (Ethiopia), Gaby Baca (Nicaragua) and May Nasr (Lebanon) and an interview in Italian with lifelong le***an, feminist and antiwar activist Lepa Mladjenovic di Belgrado. On the website voxfem.org we are simultaneously featuring the visual art and activism of South African photojournalist Zanele Muhole and Chilean visual artist Liliana Wilson. Throughout the website, you will find links to musical artists Lezbor (Croatian choir), Esma Redzepova (Roma/Macedonia), Sotiria Bellou (The Greek soul sister of Chavela Vargas) and Qiao Qiao (first out le***an singer in China). More are being added as the day goes on and permissions come in. Also happening in the moment is the sharing of real time documentation of International Women’s Day events worldwide: https://twitter.com/RadioVoxFem and on this page @RadioVoxFem. Next on VoxFem: more music, more visual art by and a global health minute.
