Remembering the day !Julia Child came to Miami Beach for Feast on the Beach

Did you know the Julia Child Award is turning 10 this year? To celebrate this momentous anniversary the Foundation is taking a cross-country tour with stops in the hometowns of our recipients—our next stop is LA on September 17 with recipients Mary Sue Millken and Susan Feniger! The tour culminates with the 10th annual Smithsonian Food History Gala on October 17, when 2024 recipient Alice Waters will receive her award. As part of this year-long celebration, we thought it would be fun to share a few fun facts about the award and our recipients.

The award itself was designed by Ashley Howell of Avid Creative. It weighs about 8 pounds and is created each year by R.S. Owens, the company that makes the Oscar and Emmy statues.

José Andrés was our 2019 recipient, but he also gave a very memorable speech at the 2016 Food History Gala, when Rick Bayless received the award.

Toni Tipton-Martin was our 2021 recipient, but she also presented recipient Sean Sherman with his award in 2023.

Jacques Pépin was our first-ever recipient in 2015, but he also presented José Andrés with his award in 2019.

Andrew Zimmern has been the Food History Gala emcee twice—in 2023 when Sean Sherman received the award and in 2019 when José Andrés received the award.

The award comes with a $50,000 grant for the food-related non-profit of the recipient’s choosing. With this year’s grant, which is going to Alice Waters’ Edible Schoolyard, the Foundation marks a milestone of giving $500,000 to food-related non-profits of the Julia Child Award recipients' choosing.

Spring is beautiful in Big Canoe, Ga. Just an hour north of Atlanta in the mountains!
Our home “The Grateful Den” is available to rent for a weekend or longer!
https://georgiacfy.com/the-grateful-den/
Welcome home to The Grateful Den, a charming 2-bedroom, 2½-bathroom cabin rental for up to 6 guests in beautiful Jasper, Georgia. This 2,200-square-foot vacation rental is spacious yet cozy, with the comforts of home, access to tons of community amenities in Big Canoe, entertainment, nice outdoor spaces, and majestic mountain vistas over an animal sanctuary!
Start days at this Big Canoe rental with a cup of coffee and hearty breakfast made in the fully equipped kitchen, toss burgers on the grill for barbecues midday, and end evenings chatting with family and friends around the fire table. The game room boasts a wet bar and an 8-foot pool table for some fun. There’s a big screen TV and remote-activated gas fireplace in the bright and inviting living room. And you can unwind with a glass of wine and a good book while the sun sets or rises in the sunroom.
Within the community, you can swim, play golf and tennis, take the kids to the playgrounds, let your pups play at the dog parks, go fishing, canoeing, paddleboarding, and more! Accommodations at this Big Canoe cabin include 1 king bed, 1 queen bed, and 1 queen Murphy bed. Plus, there’s a washer/dryer, keyless entry, a 2-car garage, and free Wi-Fi so you can stay connected. This North Georgia mountain retreat is even pet friendly!
At The Grateful Den, you’ll find the simple pleasures of day-to-day life in the peaceful Blue Ridge Mountains. You’ll also be just 6 minutes from the gate, where you can travel outside the gated community to check out local attractions, shops, events, and restaurants. It’s a great vacation home to celebrate family, friends, birthdays, holidays, and weekends away.
Living Room
Open and welcoming, the living room at your Big Canoe rental offers a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere paired with heavenly views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In fall or winter, easily switch on the stacked stone, gas fireplace with a remote — ideal for late-night reads, family chats after antique shopping in North Georgia, or cuddles with your partner on the sprawling, expandable sectional.
You can enjoy entertainment on the big screen TV whenever you please. The acoustic ceiling, quiet Big Canoe community, and high-end audio help create a harmonious vibe in this space. Play cards at the coffee table or take a midday nap on your mountain getaway. The rental home is also filled with eclectic decor that adds to your vacation experience.
Kitchen
Head to the gourmet kitchen with a coffee bar — featuring a Keurig and a standard-drip coffeemaker — for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and refreshments anytime. Your Big Canoe rental offers a convenient space to prepare meals, snacks, and drinks. You’ll have full-size appliances, spacious countertops, pots and pans, dishes, glasses, cutlery, cooking utensils, and mugs.
Fill the double-door refrigerator with fresh ingredients and leftovers from local eateries. Cook dinner on the gas stove and bake dessert in the oven. Make movie-night popcorn in the microwave. And more! Plus, there’s a rolling butcher block island for added prep space, a sink with a window overlooking the trees, a toaster oven for breakfast or pizza, and a handy dishwasher to help clean up.
Dining Area
Set beneath a gorgeous chandelier is the dining table at your Big Canoe vacation rental. Just off the kitchen, you can serve, grab seconds, and set out dessert in seconds. The table offers space for everyone to dine, play, chat, and laugh together. You can also set up a laptop for work or homeschool as needed. Best of all, you can enjoy the serene mountain vistas with every bite!
Sunroom
A lovely bonus space, the sunroom at your Big Canoe cabin rental offers a place to reconnect with nature, a partner, a friend, or a good book — no matter the season. A ceiling offers added comfort in warmer months, and you’ll have spectacular views of the North Georgia mountains from here.
Rec Room
Featuring an 8-foot professional pool table, a wet bar, a mounted big screen TV, and a queen-size Murphy bed, the game room at your North Georgia cabin rental is an awesome space to hang out and make memories on your family vacation or mountain getaway with friends.
Shoot rounds of pool together while sipping freshly made cocktails. Turn on the TV for more entertainment while playing and chatting. And step onto the deck to take in the fresh mountain air between games.
Bedrooms
Get comfortable at your 2-bedroom cabin in Big Canoe. Opt for the primary suite — with a desk in a bay window, a chandelier overhead, a TV, a king-size gravity sequence bed for extra comfort, glorious mountain views, and a private en-suite bathroom with a double vanity and standing tiled shower. Or choose the second suite that boasts a queen-size bed, a TV, a bathroom with a shower/tub combo, and more mountain vistas!
Additional accommodations at your Big Canoe rental for up to 6 guests include a queen-size Murphy bed in the game room and a half bathroom on the entry level. After a full day of fun on the water at the Big Canoe Marina, at the championship golf course, or along hiking trails in the community, return to your mountain abode to unwind and recharge.
Outdoor Spaces
Just 6 minutes from the gate, you’ll find your Big Canoe mountain home with mountain views. Step onto the spacious main deck or bonus balcony to unwind in the Blue Ridge Mountains. One offers a gas grill for mountain cookouts and the other is 2,483 feet above a national preserve — with patio furniture to enjoy your lovely piece of heaven in North Georgia.
When you’re not exploring Big Canoe trails, wandering around Eagles Rest Park, or kayaking in the national forest, it’s always nice to have your own outdoor spaces to take it easy for a while at your Big Canoe lodge.
On cooler evenings, switch on the fire table and sip wine with friends. Your semi-private vacation home also offers a 2-car garage, 6-step entry, and paved parking for up to 4 vehicles.
Other Amenities
Find plenty of outdoor activities in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest via the free Wi-Fi at your Big Canoe rental home. There’s a washer and dryer so you can pack light and keyless entry so you can check in and out right at the property. Plus, this pet-friendly cabin in North Georgia welcomes your fur babies to relax on a memorable vacation with YOU!
Community Amenities
Nestled in the gated community of Big Canoe, Georgia, The Grateful Den offers loads of communal amenities — including a golf course, tennis courts, pickleball, bocce, 3 lakes, a marina, 20+ miles of hiking trails, several indoor and outdoor swimming pools, playgrounds, playfields, and dog parks.
There are also picnic areas, Jeep trails, waterfalls, exclusive eateries, a fitness center, a multimillion-dollar lakeside clubhouse, and the Lake Disharoon Beach Club — with volleyball, a rock slide, kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, loungers, pedal boats, and lovely lake views! And that’s not all.
Local Fun
A hop, skip, and jump from your cozy cabin in Big Canoe is downtown Jasper, Dawsonville, Talking Rock, and Marble Hill. You can also take a scenic drive to Ellijay or Dahlonega for even more things to do together. Museums, wineries, orchards, seasonal events, restaurants, country shops, breweries, and more await! And you can always venture into the Chattahoochee National Forest for more outdoor fun — like hiking, geocaching, ziplining, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, and mountain biking.
Cairn View Winery
Personalized wine tastings, delicious food pairings, and live entertainment await at this Appalachian winery in the North Georgia mountains.
