THE TRAIL TO THE ORANGE WILD WEEKEND & THE RARE PINK FLANNEL FLOWER....🍃

Long sideways detours to spot a rare wildflower or forage for a certain something is not uncommon in these parts. Particularly in the lead up to the Orange Wild Weekend. However, this particular moment was the detour of any detour.

and I recently wandered down Narrowneck Rd in Katoomba on a long sideways meander to the March Orange Wild Weekend to sight this exquisite carpet of Pink flannel flowers (Actinotus forsythii)

Pink flannel flowers emerge only in specific conditions: when sufficient rainfall follows a bushfire.

The Summer 2019-20 fires provided the right fire conditions, followed by many months of rain meaning the flowers whose seeds lie dormant until the time is right emerged.

The last time these conditions were documented at Narrow Neck was in the mid-1950s.

I'm not sure if these beautiful flannels will be there for much longer. Road trips like this come once or twice in a lifetime it seems.

Forever grateful to for shooting this moment (of many that wild week) and for never, ever questioning any of my detours, just merrily coming along with.

YOU ARE INVITED - THE ORANGE WILD WEEKEND F.O.O.D WEEK EDITION - APRIl 16-18 2021 🍁🍂🌾

This Autumn season is now well and truly upon us in Orange. The mushrooms are popping in the forest, the leaves are turning and and the orchards are heaving with fruit and wild apples road-side 🙌

As we tune into Autumn and her magnificent bounty, we have designed our April Orange Wild Weekend F.O.OD Week itinerary with nature in mind.

You will experience and meet local and sustainable producers, taste umpteen local wines, experience a wild Autumn bushwalk on the mountain learning about local plants, fauna and cultural burning with botanist Col; then head to the pine forest in an edible mushroom foraging adventure and dining experience.

We stop into the region's famed restaurants including Tonic restaurant in Millthorpe & Sister's Rock at Borrodell Vineyard.

Finally, you will finish your weekend in a foraged tablescape workshop with us where you will be inspired to bring our thoughtful and sustainable floral design process (no floral foam here!) to your table at home; all whilst enjoying brunch at The Old Convent. The workshop will feature Autumn foraged goodies and a delicious spread from Josie who will tell us about her cooking journey, and inspiration for the menu.

One of our guests generously summed up her March Wild Weekend with us....

"Ali and team, what an incredible experience last weekend was. Im still pinching myself, did all of that magic actually happen? I felt like Alice In Wonderland... cobblestone streets, giant gums and orange mushrooms. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to escape from the day-to-day, meet new people, learn new things and get into the WILD. You will be left inspired, rested and reset. Cant wait for the next one"

We can't wait to host more wonderful guests in April!

Link in bio to sign up - visit the link, or DM me direct for a copy of our booking form and we will get you all sorted! 🍁

Final bookings for April will close on Tuesday.

We can't wait to share in the wild with you.

A COUPLE MORE SNAPS - THE AUTUMN ORANGE WILD WEEKEND 🍁🍂

It's true.. we are still dreaming of last weekend over here.

The end to our three days together was spent making in an Autumn floral tablescape workshop at the Old Convent.

It's a magical place to finish.

If you swipe to the end you'll see the chooks couldn't resist taking part too. This particular sweet one ended up under our chairs so as not to miss the front row action.

We share our hints and tips for sustainable floristry in the workshop, as well as evoking the seasons by seeking what's around you and in abundance.

Some of our edible mushrooms made the tablescape , as well as local wild apples from the Convent pears and figs and brilliant white dahlias carefully picked in the morning from

Some more of our guests have generously summed up their experience with us....

"Ali and her team are not just professionals, they somehow spirit you away with them into another more relaxed and connected world. It didn’t take me long to melt right into the story of what it is to be wild and begin to openly embrace the joy of it.
I am so grateful I was able to be a part of it and meet others in the group, hear their stories and see how they were similarly affected by Ali and her team’s gentle enthusiasm"

We miss everyone already.

Come join the fun!

We just can't promise we'll be able to let go of you too quickly. I guess the Wild Weekend family feeling sticks for life. We don't mind that at all.

FORAGE FOR AN AUTUMN FEAST WITH US - THE ORANGE WILD WEEKEND

The sky is the limit when working with passionate producers and chefs.

Ever wanted to learn how to forage for an edible mushroom dish? Robbo specialises in artisanal foods and mushroom foraging on the slopes of Ghannabulla / Mount Canobolas in Orange NSW. Devoting much of his life to promoting local produce of the Orange region, Robbo is a walking encyclopaedia of seasonal produce, and where to find it.

During our Autumn Orange Wild Weekend we will be heading off into the pine forest of a Saturday afternoon to forage for wild mushrooms, and then off to meet Charles for dinner.

is Head Chef at Sister's Rock restaurant, set in the stunning Borrodell vineyard. Former  Chef, Charles has been making the most of locally foraged produce ever since arriving at Sister’s Rock, and our evening together on the mountain will be no exception.

Everything in the menu will be inspired by our adventure with Robbo and Charles' passion for regional, seasonal food. His imagination blows me away. This menu is one of a kind for our Autumn Wild Weekend adventures with guests.

We can't wait to share it with you. We promise you won't forget it.

BUSHWALKING IN AUTUMN - THE ORANGE WILD WEEKEND 🍂🐝🍃

Col aka. our local David Attenborough is planning some very special new trails for our upcoming Autumn weekend experiences.

The unique biodiversity on Ghannabulla / Mount Canobolas, an extinct volcano, provides us with an endless list to narrow down for our guests to enjoy when we meet up each season...and we think we have landed somewhere pretty special for March and April.

Our bushwalking experience will include background on the 2018 mountain fires and natural regeneration; cultural burning perspectives and also some of the very quirky pollination techniques of one of our very special native orchids up there (!) one of which Col recently filmed for a special doco for

More on that later!

Safe to say I still learn more each and every time I meet with Col. Lucky for us, there is still time for us to understand this unique and beautifully sub-alpine ecosystem before it's too late.

Come join us!

Final spots still avail for April and March crew 🖐️ Link in bio!

And have a beautiful week.

ALL HANDS ON DECK 🍃 🌿 THE ORANGE WILD WEEKEND

Our ray of sunshine, event guru and talented florist Lexi and I are prepping a foraged tablescape workshop in a very special new venue for guests at our Orange Wild Weekends in March and April 🌾🌾

After a weekend full of foraging, native plant spotting on Ghannabulla /Mount Canobolas, bushwalking, and (re-)discovering local produce and wine - guests will learn the tricks of the trade of a simple floral home tablescape approach with us (no floral foam here!) and most of all, have a whole load of fun making at our stunning new venue over brunch! More on that later ☺️

Lokale Blumen (meaning: local flowers) is our floral studio, and was born during our first foray into commercial floristry. Unwrapping every flower from it's plastic wrapper on a traditional city floristry course, it was evident the flowers had just arrived from their long-haul flight to Sydney.

This experience sent me on a mission to hunt out the local flower farming community, and it didn't take us long to find it. Soon enough, I worked on a short stint working on flower farms in Tasmania, Australia; learning how to grow peonies, poppies, and selling directly to the local market. No exporting, no nasties. We have a few lessons up our sleeve after this journey 🌾☺️

Our guests rated this simple workshop as one of their favourite things on our most recent Spring Orange Wild Weekend. We can't wait to share it with you!

Snips and foraging totes are all provided.

We won't give it all away here, except to say - you should join us!

We can't wait to host all of our guests in Autumn.

FOR THE LOVE OF WILD INGREDIENTS  - MEET CHEF CHARLES WOODWARD - THE ORANGE WILD WEEKEND

started in kitchens as a casual pot washer, working in a small city in the middle of England. Without realising it, he was laying the foundations of understanding and using local ingredients, and building the stepping stones to what would soon become a wild adventure down under.

Fast forward many years later, Charles began his journey in Australia before becoming the Head chef at The Roving Marrow. Following this Melbourne stint, Charles relocated to Sydney to work at , Est. before last year making the sea change to regional Orange NSW to take up Head Chef at the magnificent Sisters Rock restaurant.

Charles' told us one of his biggest pulls to make the move from Sydney to (situated next to the magnificent Ghannabulla / Mount Canobolas) was being closely situated to the wild ingredients of the mountain and surrounds.

Charles now has access to seasonal truffles and is driven by locally foraged and grown ingredients, and above all, flavour.

We are so excited to spent time with Charles when we cook up our foraged mushroom bounty in the upcoming Autumn in March and April.

We'll be visiting Charles right after foraging for mushrooms in the nearby pine forest with Robbo .....

Pictured here is local spring lamb, followed by pasture raised chicken terrine, with mushrooms from Robbo ; leek and parfait.

We have a feeling we're in for a real treat 🍃🍃🍃

Come join us in March or April, as part of the adventures....

FOR THE LOVE OF LOCALLY FORAGED & GROWN INGREDIENTS  - MEET CHEF CHARLES WOODWARD - THE ORANGE WILD WEEKEND

Chef Charles  started in Kitchens as a casual pot washer, working in a small kitchen in a small city in the middle of England. Without realising it he was laying the foundations for a pure love of ingredients. It was the first place he had ever seen or heard of things like foie gras or turbot. Fast forward many years later, Charles moved down under and began his journey in Daylesford, as a Sous chef at The Lakehouse Restaurant, before becoming the Head chef at The Roving Marrow getting a score of 14.5 in the 2017 Good Food Guide. After Melbourne, Charles relocated to Sydney to work at Cottage point Inn, Est. , Bentley and Pilu at Freshwater before just recently moving to Borrodell Estate to take the reins as Head Chef at Sisters Rock restaurant in July 2020. One of the biggest drives moving from Sydney to Sisters Rock restaurant next to the magnificent Ghannabulla / Mount Canobolas was being closely situated to the wild ingredients that surround the restaurant. Charles has access to seasonal truffles and local mushrooms at Borrodell Vineyard, not to mention fine wine. Charles firmly believes that flavour is paramount above all else, and is driven by locally foraged and grown ingredients. You might have guessed that we are beyond excited to have Charles and the Borrodell team on our upcoming Autumn Wild Weekends in March and April.

A hint, we'll be visiting Charles on our Orange Wild Weekend right after foraging for mushrooms in the nearby pine forest with Robbo.....
