Male and female flowers
🚻 Did you know that e.g. cucumbers, pumpkins, squash, and zucchini have both male and female flowers?
🔼 Male flowers grow on simple stems.
🔽 Female flowers have a small fruit at their base.
🥒 Unless you are growing self-pollinating hybrid varieties, you need both types of flowers for fruit production.
🐝 Our garden friends, the pollinators, play a crucial role in moving pollen from male to female flowers, helping us to have a beautiful harvest from our garden.

The easiest way to kill your plants? Neglecting to properly harden them off.
Whether you've grown your own seedlings or picked them from a nursery, the hardening off process is crucial before transplanting them outdoors.
Hardening off is the gradual adaptation of plants to outdoor conditions. Here's how to do it right:
🌱 Ease into it: Start by introducing your plants to outdoor conditions for short bursts (e.g. up to 30 min on the first day), gradually increasing exposure each day over about a week.
🌱 Choose the right time: Wait until the weather is consistently mild before starting the hardening off process.
🌱 Find a sheltered spot: Place your plants where they’ll get partial sunlight and be shielded from harsh winds, which helps reduce stress.
🌱 Keep them hydrated: Keep an eye on soil moisture, as plants can quickly dry out, especially on sunny, windy days.
🌱 Avoid extreme conditions: Protect your plants from extreme temperatures, too much sun, and heavy rain during the transition period to prevent damage.
Happy gardening! 🌿
I was going through my gardening notes yesterday and found a phrase that I wrote down a few years ago:
🧘🏻♀️ Make self-care a part of your routine🧘🏻♀️
This is such a good reminder to all of us!
Last year I started going to a massage therapist - first out of necessity but then I scheduled monthly visits to keep my health more or less in check. It has been wonderful and I am continuing this year as well. On a daily basis, a quiet time with a cup of tea or a book also helps me to gather my thoughts and decompress. In summer I love early mornings outside in the garden - just taking a moment to face the rising sun and to hear the sounds of nature around me. Have you tried walking barefoot on a cool morning grass in your garden? It awakens all your senses!
I would love to hear what you do to improve your well being - walks, yoga, gardening?
🌸 A year in flowers - Part I 🌸
Have a fun New Year’s Eve, friends! ✨🥂💫
