The top 3 questions I get asked as a documentary photographer by people wanting photos that feel like them:

1️⃣ Can you make me look good? Friend, you already do. My job is to show you just how radiant you are.

2️⃣ What if I don’t love being in front of the camera? You’re not alone, and I’ve got you. I always describe my sessions as really fun hangouts where we also get awesome photos of you!

3️⃣ What if I don’t know what to do? You absolutely don’t need to “know” what to do, because there’s nothing to know! I create a space where you feel comfortable to be yourself. There’s never a wrong choice. You just be you, and I’ll handle the rest.

Sarah and Tristan’s engagement session at Gene’s BBQ was a whole vibe. 🌟 They channeled their love of Mad Men with martini glasses in hand, turning the empty restaurant into their own vintage playground. 🥂✨ The jukebox, the retro decor, the quiet intimacy of having the place to themselves—it was all so perfectly them.

It’s officially proposal season! I started this season off with such an incredible day; I can’t wait to tell you all about it.

It was built all around who they are as people, and you can see the love shining out of every element of the plan.

I had the wind knocked out of me🌟

…and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. I had the joy of photographing a newborn session for a couple whose engagement session and wedding I photographed.

As we wrapped up the session, Donna—the baby’s mom—said something that stopped me in my tracks.

She looked at her little one and said, “All the photos are going to be just me smiling at her.”

And I said, “What a lovely thing for a child to have from their childhood.”

And THAT’S when it hit me like a freight train: not everyone has that.

Not everyone has photos from their childhood—much less ones that show how deeply loved and cared for they are. It can be easy to take those photos of love for granted, but they’re not just pictures. They’re proof. Proof of joy, of connection, of love that spans generations.

When I look at moments like these, I’m reminded why I do what I do. It’s not about getting perfect photos. It’s about capturing the truth: a parent’s unwavering adoration, the quiet strength of a growing family, the love so big it spills into every frame.

So to Donna, Charles, and their sweet little one: thank you for trusting me to capture your story. Your smiles, your love—it’s all there. And one day, your child will have these photos to look back on, to see exactly how loved they were from the very beginning.

To everyone else: take the photo. Get in front of the camera. Document the love, the laughter, the quiet moments. They can mean everything to a lot of people. 💛

When life throws lemons straight into your wedding plans, you pivot like champs and make delicious Italian lemon wedding cookies.

With the magic of their incredible planner (shoutout to Carina @‌RaleighWeddings), Thomas and Emma’s original Asheville plans shifted and they turned Atlanta into the perfect backdrop for part one of their celebration.

They tied the knot at the beautiful Swan Coach House, complete with homemade Italian wedding cookies baked by Emma herself. 🍪 After a sweet and lovely ceremony, Emma switched into a second stunning dress, and we headed to Barcelona Wine Bar for an intimate dinner and mini reception. 🍷

Next year, they’ll have part two of their incredible celebration in Asheville, and I can’t wait!

Kat and Will’s wedding at Rhodes Hall was the perfect mix of quiet elegance and total badassery. Kat rocked a stunning black wedding dress (yep, BLACK 🔥), and their ceremony at the base of that iconic interior staircase was as timeless as it was emotional, filled with so much love for loved ones who have passed.⁠

Some favorite wild moments?: their wedding party totally "iced" them (yep, that kind of iced 🍾) and they capped off the night moshing with their DJ. What’s a wedding without a little headbanging, right? 🤘⁠

HOT TAKE: A DOCUMENTARY STYLE CAN BE FOR ANYONE

Some Rando on the Internet:
"A documentary style isn’t for everyone. Some people need direction—they can’t just ‘be themselves’ in front of a camera."

My Response:
Is that really true? Or is it just the narrative we’ve been fed: that there’s a “right” way to be in front of the camera?

Here’s what I know: when we let go of those ideas—stop trying to “perform” or hit the perfect pose—magic happens. We’re not meant to fit into a mold. We’re meant to be authentically ourselves.

Documentary style works because it’s not about forcing something unnatural—it’s about finding the beauty in your natural. And yes, anyone can feel comfortable in front of the camera when they’re given the space and freedom to just be.

What if we rethought the whole concept of “camera ready”?

After their engagement session—starting cozy at home with their pets and then exploring one of their favorite spots, Decatur Square—the couple shared this with me:

I'M RAVEN, AND I RUN THIS JOINT.

I’m a wedding and portrait photographer based in Georgia but obsessed with traveling, emotion, and meeting badass people.

I didn’t get my start in photography in the traditional way. I got my start in photography at Medieval Times. Yep. My story began at a place where people eat with their hands, watch knights on horseback, and wear paper crowns. I didn’t go in looking for photography, and I sure didn’t expect to fall in love with photography while I was there, but that’s how love works, isn't it? You see something or someone from across the room, and you fall mad, you fall hard, and you don’t rely on anything but your gut. It’s wild and liberating, and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

I certainly feel that way about taking photographs, but I bet you know that feeling, too. I bet there have been times when you’ve trusted your heart cells as much as your brain cells. I bet you know a little something about instinct, about being true to your nature, and about falling in gorgeous, primal, unapologetic love. I bet you also fight the idea of being “put in a box” the same way a cat fights a cat carrier.
