Following the great success of the 1st episode - 55th place in the global rnb/hip hop chart on Mixcloud - I've decided to raise the bar and blend some flavours from different decades into one smooth R&B / Soul / Hip Hop / Disco joint. 💄 🛼 ☎️ 🌴 🪩

Bringing up the tempo from 70 bpm to 120 in an hour is not so simple, but thanks to these amazing songs I've managed to tackle the journey that starts with a handful of contemporary pieces heavily infused with 90s vibes. It was reasonable to move forward with some OG tunes straight from that era and since most of the greatest 90s R&B and Hip Hop classics are based on 80s soul samples it was inevitable to add a couple of them as well. Regarding the Hip Hop songs it's always a big challenge to find some period correct remixes with a more silky flavour instead of the bass-heavy mainstream versions, but if you dig persistently enough you'll get your reward.

Following the explicit 90s the time machine takes you back to the beginning of the 80s when Soul started to take over 70s Funk & Disco creating a unique mixture I tend to call Boogie nowadays because you just cannot set 4 different genres in a song's metadata tag. I have to admit that there is an odd-one-out here: these genius guys called Loveface made an incredibly good remix for Angie Stone's monster "Wish I Didn't Miss You" elevating it into a completely new level. They've changed the entire song underneath the accapella and catapulted it straight back to 1982 from 2002 which was my purpose with the entire mix so this tune is kinda like the essence of the entire whole.

And now that you've read so far it's time to flip the calendar to a long lost Friday evening, put on your make up & swag, call the gang and head out to the burger joint following by the arcade and end up in a club to flash your rollerskating skills under the glitterball until dawn.

From '90s R&B to '80s Disco to get you in the mood on a Friday night 💄 🛼 ☎️ 🌴 🪩 Artwork created by the amazingly talented da_schlechti https://www.instagram.com/da_schlechti/

And now something completely different!

We could brag about this piece being eFBé's 100th Mixcloud upload from the last 12 years, but what's more important is the genre itself.

There was a time about 30 years ago - for the last time in the music industry ever since - when the top list songs were actually the best of their genre. Success wasn't about the A&R's connections, the influencers involved in the campaign, the obviously manipulated Spotify algorithms or the song being selected for the actual Netflix blockbuster's soundtrack. Your entire song, including the music, the lyrics and the singing had to be top shelf to make it.

This was the golden age of R&B, Hip-Hop and G-Funk. This is where I picked 16 'love making' songs from, plus I've added two extra pieces: one classical tune from the middle of the 2000's and one hidden retro gem from 2020.

I feel like I could write and entire book about the most prominent faces producing hundreds of Grammy winning songs for major league artists like Whitney Houston, Jennifer Lopez and Justin Bieber but let's just settle with two interesting things for now. The first honourable mention goes to the most likely totally unknown Danish duo, Cutfather & Joe, who were responsible for not less than 40(!) Top 10 singles in the UK Singles Chart only between 1993 and 2006 with 7 of them reaching the number-one spot. The first and last songs in the mix are two of their masterpieces.
The second fun fact is that while I was digging deep in the well- and not so well-known songs I realised that there are possibly hundreds of great tunes out there - even from top tier artists - which have never made it to an album or not even a single because they've been written as a part of a movie soundtrack and greedy studios never handed out the rights, so you can only source them from these compilations. It's a said thing which had happened to a bunch of original R&B albums from this period as well so this is why streaming platforms cannot add them to their catalog ever since.

Least but not last for me the most beautiful thing of this era is the fact how the economical boom of the late '80s and early '90s defined all the iconic merchandise of the entire subculture. It was and is virtually essential for the lyrics, the album covers and for the videos to feature all the swag including houses with pools, expensive cars, jewellery, branded clothes - even the booze and the drugs - on top of the regular 'love making' layer.

But enough of words for now. It's time to pick up your silk shirts, dip into those hot tubs decorated with scented candles and sip on some champagne for 85 minutes! 🌴🥂🍾 🕯
