A sweet, beautiful story from Broadway, via yesterday's Twitter feed of NY Post columnist John Podhoretz:

"I have a story to tell about what happened today at the matinee of Merrily We Roll Along on Broadway. (The production is spectacular, one of the best I've ever seen, and I've seen two previous horrible versions of it.) An understudy went on for the female lead, Lindsay Mendez.
Her name is Sherz Aletaha. And she was great. Really, really great. I've seen many bad or mediocre understudies in my life. She was maybe the best ever. Anyway, there's a scene in the play in which the stars, Daniel Radcliffe and Jonathan Groff, type stuff on a typewriter.
After the curtain call, Groff and Radcliffe and Aletaha came out to make a holiday pitch for a theater charity called Broadway Cares. Radcliffe announced he was auctioning off the piece of paper he and Groff had typed on for charity; they would sign it.
He reported that what Groff had typed on the paper was a profane paean to Aletaha's performance. "F----in Sherz!" Groff had typed. Charmingly, he ran the auction, and got the price of the piece of signed paper up to $1,500, then shouted Sold! The audience erupted. "
Radcliffe asked the guy what his name was for him to sign it. And the guy shouted out, "Why don't you just give it to her," meaning Sherz Aletaha. She clamped her hand on her mouth and started to cry. The audience erupted even more wildly.
It was one of the most spontaneous and beautiful acts of kindness I have ever witnessed. Radcliffe and Groff stood there applauding the generous theatergoer, and everyone there--who had just seen a masterpiece of a show already--was transported from the theater in joy.

Join EMBARK Co-founder Katie Schmidt Feder along with two Peekskill actors, Nick Nazario and Emrigael Alpern next weekend at either ARTS ON THE LAKE or TOMPKINS CORNERS CULTURAL CENTER for this poignant work created from actual letters back and forth in 1937 between an American fighting in Spain during the Spanish Civil war as part of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, and his wife, who remained in New York City as an anti-fascism activist.

It is a great opportunity to learn about the Spanish Civil War, which was the precursor to World War II and hear the powerful folk songs of the era.

——

In honor of Veterans Day, George and Ruth: Songs and Letters of The Spanish Civil War will be presented at Arts on the Lake in Kent on Saturday, November 11, at 7:30 pm and Sunday, November 12, at 2 pm at Tompkins Corners Cultural Center in Putnam Valley.

Directed by Katie Schmidt Feder, this play of letters between newlyweds George and Ruth Watt during George’s time as a volunteer in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade includes folk songs from the 1930s selected and adapted by Tony Saletan. Performed by singer/guitarist Albi Gorn, they will accompany actors Nick Nazario and Emrigael Alpern. Photographic images from the period, including many by Robert Capa, are projected during the performance.

George’s son Dan Lynn Watt discovered the letters between his parents in 1997, and with his wife, Molly, wove them into dialogue illuminating the experiences of young Americans who volunteered to fight in the Lincoln Brigade against the Nazi-supported forces of General Franco. Ruth, who remained in New York City as both office worker and anti-war activist, provides the perspective of war’s homefront, while George's letters reveal his passionate commitment to the cause of freedom and democracy.

Albi Gorn, who has been playing and singing for 60 years, is excited to “sing the songs in this moving tribute to the brave people from all over the world who went to fight Fascism.”

This version of the piece was originally produced by The Capa Space Photography Center in Yorktown, NY, in conjunction with their This is Robert Capa! Exhibition. That exhibit is now moving to Arts on the Lake. It will be open weekends from Saturday, November 4, through Sunday, November 26. The book, Spain in Their Hearts, signed by author Adam Hochschild, will be available at a discount in both places.
Tickets are $20.
TCCC tickets: https://www.tompkinscorners.org/theatre.html

Arts on the Lake tickets: https://artsonthelake.org/event.php?ev_id=27199

A percentage of proceeds will be donated to ALBA – The Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives.

Hello actor and entertainer types! Sharing a spooky job post 🎃💀:

NYC’s renowned immersive horror theater company, the Psycho Clan, is recruiting actors to participate in “The Horsemen: Terror Lies in Chaos,” in Sleepy Hollow, every weekend for the month of October and the first weekend of November.

This is more than just hiding behind walls and jumping out at people. There's a level of theatricality that they embrace. Auditions are September 25th and 26th from 5 - 8 pm at the venue, located in Sleepy Hollow, NY at the Kathryn W. Davis RiverWalk Center in Kingsland Point Park located at 266 Palmer Avenue. If you can’t make it those days they will try to work something out with you.

Email them at [email protected] your headshot and resume, as well as the day and hour you would like to come in (i.e 9/26 at 6 pm) and they will confirm your appointment. If you don't have a headshot or resume, don't let that stop you.

Rehearsals are October 4th and 5th from 5-9 pm and they open on October 6th and close November 5th.

The schedule for all staff is: Thursdays-Sundays (with added nights on 10/30 and 31) from 5:30-12:30, except October 26th - 31st, which is 4:30-1:30.

No hay edad en la creatividad.”

¿Qué se puede decir? Hermosa. Danza y expresión humana. La vida es el paso del tiempo, y el tiempo es de lo que está hecha la vida. La edad no importa para bailar, porque la danza no entiende de edades, solo de entrega.
