🥉 Bendigo's gun cyclist Alessia McCaig has started the UCI world track cycling championships in superb form.
Alessia teamed with Kristina Clonan and Molly McGill to capture bronze in the team sprint at Ballerup velodrome in Denmark.
A multiple finalist in Bendigo’s Sports Star of the Year award, Alessia is racing at the world senior titles for the first time.
Gold in the team sprint went to Paris Olympic gold medallists Great Britain as Netherlands powered to silver.

A big campaign for Alessia McCaig will include the keirin, 500m time trial, and sprint.
Among those trackside in Ballerup were Alessia’s parents, Cameron and Ree, and Alessia’s brother, Connor.
The McCaig family has strong links to cycling and Bendigo’s Sports Star of the Year awards.
Alessia’s grandfather, Alan was a driving force in the formation of the Bendigo International Madison carnival in 1972 and promoter and teams controller in the early years of the city’s biggest cycling/athletics carnival.
Alan’s younger brother, Frank was the first winner of the Bendigo Sports Star of the Year award in 1965-66 and is in the Basil Ashman Hall of Fame which is at Red Energy Arena in West Bendigo.
A passionate supporter at many of Alessia’s races whether it was for national or state title, or at club level was her grandmother Bev McCaig who passed away in July.

Another of Bendigo’s top track cyclists, Blake Agnoletto is also in Ballerup where he will race in the elimination and also team with Kelland O'Brien in Madison.
The feats of Alessia McCaig and Blake Agnoletto have put both in the running for Bendigo’s Sports Star of the Year award for 2024.

It was mixed emotions for Bryde O’Rourke, family and friends in last week’s AFLW debut for Geelong.

Just minutes after taking to the field, Bryde injured her collarbone in the clash with Fremantle Dockers on the Cats’ turf at GMHBA Stadium in Kardinia Park.
A defender who can also play wing, Bryde had two disposals before she was hurt in a match where the Dockers kicked on for a 45-27 victory.
Among those watching on were Bryde’s parents, Ray and Marg.

Taken by Geelong as a father-daughter selection, Bryde’s play for the La Trobe University Bendigo Pioneers in last season’s Coates Talent League caught the eye of the Cats recruiting team.

Bryde is likely to miss at least three weeks.

The talented teenager was among four players from the Bendigo Pioneers women’s program to earn a scholarship in the Bendigo Sports Star of the Year award in 2023.
The others were Lila Keck, drafted by Carlton; Keely Fullerton, drafted by Gold Coast; and Steph Demeo.

Although sidelined by injury, Bryde who previously played for Strathfieldsaye Storm was rapt as the Cats marked a crucial 44-41 victory against Sydney last Sunday.
A win-loss tally of two-four and a draw has Geelong in 11th place on the AFLW ladder.

The Cats make their way to Richmond’s Punt Road Oval this Saturday to take on the fourth-placed Tigers from 3.05pm.

🥈 BAMAWM Extension's Col Pearse has won his second Paralympics medal.

Pearse won silver in the men's 200m medley SM10 overnight in Paris, finishing in a time of 2:12.79.

Pearse was just over two seconds behind gold medalist Stefano Raimondi of Italy, who won in a time of 2:10.24.

Pearse knocked off almost four seconds from his qualifying time in the final to win silver.

Pearse's silver medal came a fortnight after the death of his grandfather.

"Whenever he used to go to the pub back home, he used to tell everyone about me. To lose him so close to the competition, this was for him, I know up in the clouds he's sucking on a few VBs and crying and being so proud of me," Pearse said. 🥲

This afternoon the eyes of athletics fans across Bendigo and further afield will focus on Andy Buchanan as he competes in the marathon.
The 42.2km showdown will start at 4pm (AEST).

It’s Buchanan’s first Olympics and just the fifth marathon of his career.
A dual national 10km cross-country champion, Buchanan raced at last year’s world XC titles in Bathurst.

The biggest road race of his career leading into Paris was seventh place at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

He caught the eye of selectors with strong runs in the past three editions of the Haspa Hamburg Marathon.

Buchanan is a multiple finalist in Bendigo’s Sports Star of the Year award and gun competitor for Bendigo Region, aka Bats, and Bendigo University Pride.

Athletics Bendigo has teamed up with Verve Running to host a “watch party” at Lar Birpa Bendigo Athletics Complex in Retreat Road, Flora Hill from 3pm on Saturday.

🥇There are strong links between Bendigo and Australia’s gold medal-winning cyclists who blitzed in the teams pursuit at the Paris Olympics.

Victorious coach Tim Decker began his coaching career in Bendigo and also racked up an impressive list of wins on the track and road.

Decker was a finalist in Bendigo’s Sports Star of the Year and his feats as a competitor and coach earned the Faith Leech Inspiration Award at Bendigo Sports Star of the Year for 2014-15.

The Decker-coached team went into the Paris showdown as underdogs against the might of Great Britain, Italy and Denmark.

In the race for gold it was the Aussies who charged to victory in 3 minutes 42.067 seconds to end GB’s reign as the discipline’s best at Olympic level.

There’s plenty more medals to Australia’s track cycling team which has Tim Decker and another Bendigo-raised champion in Glenn O’Shea as part of the coaching panel.

Earlier this year, O’Shea was inducted to the Basil Ashman Hall of Fame at Bendigo’s Sports Star of the Year presentation.

Australia’s run in men’s basketball at the Paris Olympics was ended early Tuesday (AEST) as the quarter-final against Serbia went into overtime.

A Boomers line-up which included Bendigo’s Dyson Daniels and Maryborough’s Matthew Dellavedova charged to a 24-point lead during the second quarter on the back of superb shooting by Patty Mills and Josh Giddey.

Competing at his fourth Olympics, Dellavedova is a dual winner of Bendigo’s Sports Star of the Year, won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, and an NBA championship with Cleveland Cavaliers.

Daniels marked his Olympics debut.
The 21-year-old guard who is a multiple monthly finalist and scholarship recipient in Sports Star of the Year took on some tough defensive assignments on the Paris court.

In the quarter-final the Boomers dominated most of the first half.
A 31-17 lead at quarter-time became more than 20 in the second.
The Nikola Jokic and Bogdan Bogdanovic-inspired Serbia struck back to be within 12 points at half-time.

Serbia dominated the third term.

As the Serbs raised the defensive pressure and shots started to fall, Australia struggled at both ends of the court.
Serbia led 67-65 at a quarter to play.

The Boomers showed plenty of fighting spirit to make it 82-all by the end of the fourth quarter as an epic contest went into overtime.

Serbia won the extra period, 13-8, to seal a 95-90 victory.

Serbia will now meet the United States in the semi-finals.

It’s BOOM or bust as Australia’s men’s basketball team takes on Serbia in tonight’s quarter-final at the Paris Olympics.
A Boomers line-up which includes Bendigo’s Dyson Daniels and Maryborough’s Matthew Dellavedova finished the pool rounds on a one-two record.
Australia tipped off its Games campaign by beating Spain, but was then outplayed by Canada and Greece.
Medal hopes are still alive as the Boomers take on Serbia from 10.30pm on Tuesday (AEST).
Competing at his first Olympics, Dyson Daniels has impressed with his defensive workrate and also accuracy from three-point range.

The winner of the Australia and Serbia match will face USA or Brazil in the semi-finals.

Dustin Martin’s brilliant AFL career with Richmond will end on a 302-game mark.
Martin today called time on his playing days with the Tigers.

A triple premiership player and three-time Norm Smith medallist as best on ground in the grand final, Martin was joint winner of Bendigo’s Sports Star of the Year in 2017-18.

The football champion shared the honour with yachtsman Glenn Ashby whose feats on the water included America’s Cup success and competing at the Olympics.

Among the many career highs for Martin was a Brownlow medal and first premiership victory in 2017.
Martin was a key factor in the grand final wins of 2019 and ’20.

As well as a Brownlow, three premierships, Martin was a four-time All-Australian, a three-time winner of the Gary Ayres award for best in an AFL finals series.

He also earned the Jack Dyer Medal as Richmond’s fairest and best in 2016 and ’17 and wore number four which had been worn by legendary forward Royce Hart, a four-time premiership player for the Tigers.
Martin’s final game for the yellow and black was against North Melbourne last Saturday.

There had been speculation he may head to Gold Coast and reunite with premiership-winning coach Damien Hardwick, but that is not to be.
