Three scholarship recipients in Bendigo’s Sports Star of the Year awards featured in the top 15 at Monday night’s AFLW national draft.
Lucia Painter, Alexis Gregor and Lavinia Cox all capped superb seasons with the La Trobe University Bendigo Pioneers in the Coates Talent League.
Another rising star from the Bendigo region to make her way to the big league is Piper Dunlop from Sandhurst.
Painter’s play in the midfield for the Pioneers and Victoria Country’s under-18 team caught the attention of West Coast’s recruiting scouts.
The Eagles used pick seven to select Painter who is a dual scholarship recipient in Sports Star.
The Winslow White Hills Demons midfielder is in this year’s intake and was also chosen in ’22.
Key position player Alexis Gregor is on her way from Moama to Geelong after being taken at pick 10 by the Cats.
Dual-code athletes Lavinia Cox and Piper Dunlop now step up to the challenge of playing AFLW.
A young gun on the basketball court, Cox was a Sports Star scholarship recipient in ’23.
The athletic midfielder played for the Pioneers and also for Eaglehawk in the Champions IGA Central Victoria women’s competition.
Outstanding play in the basketball court earned Cox a rookie contract with Bendigo Spirit this Women’s National Basketball League season.
A scholarship recipient in 2017 when starring on the basketball court, Dunlop had a superb season in the ruck for Geelong in the VFLW and also for the Andrew Saladino-coached Sandhurst in the Central Victoria Football League.
Dunlop was taken at pick 37 in the Telstra AFLW draft.
There will be a strong representation from Bendigo region in next year’s AFLW action.

As you’ll learn in this short clip, Caitlin was under the belief that she was attending the awards as a mentor - which she took in her stride and played the role well. We were delighted to surprise her with her induction into the Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame can be viewed at Red Energy Arena Bendigo.

🏀 Daniels stars for Pelicans against Mavericks!
BENDIGO-RAISED basketball star Dyson Daniels played a key role as New Orleans Pelicans scored a two-point victory in their latest NBA win against Dallas Mavericks.
Already in the running for Bendigo’s Sports Star of the Year award after being taken at pick eight in the NBA draft, Daniels scored 11 points and racked up three rebounds, two assists and three steals on the New Orleans court.
Throughout his 22 minutes on court, Daniels was often opposed to Dallas point guard Luka Doncic.
The Daniels’ family of parents Ricky and Brikita, and Dyson’s brothers Kai and Dash were able to watch the Pelicans beat the Mavs.
The Pelicans are away for this Saturday’s clash with Phoenix Suns.
On his journey to the NBA, Dyson Daniels starred for Victoria as it won silver at last year’s Australian under-20 championships in Mackays.
His play across five matches earned a Sports Star award for May, along with talented gymnast Ruby Conti.
Dyson was also a recipient of a Sports Star scholarship award in consecutive years.
This year’s scholarship intake includes Dash Daniels who will be bound for Guam in late November to represent Australia at the FIBA Oceania under-15 championships.
