This is a pastel portrait that I’ve started. Unfinished still. There’s still a lot to do to get it where I want it. But I’m loving this.

My great nephew, Gabe -a few years ago on his birthday.
About 16x12” pastel

Inspiration comes in so many forms. Months ago, I was watching a video of my great niece on stage for the first time within a row of 9 three-foot ballerinas-to-be and inspiration hit my heart. I saw those sweet soft faces with their little pink tutus trying so hard to remember the dance. It was adorable and I immediately decided that I would paint that painting someday.

I started that painting on Friday. I have always loved Degas' work because he caught the feeling of dancers so well. He was the first painter I admired as a young child. His work has always inspired me. Who is your first favorite painter? Who is it that has inspired you from the start? Which painting of yours reminds you of their work, or what will you paint next that will honor that respect you have for your favorite painter?
This is another painting I painted from my model Roxanne.

So my students were at a beach and feeling overwhelmed by the crowd of people there. So I offered tge $5 for every person they painted in their painting. It was the humor they needed. One swimmer heard me and offered to pose! It was a fun day. Congratulations to Karen Walker who won $65 on her 13 people. To the rest of you… no the spots on my shasta are not counted as people. No people can’t be disguised as trees! 🤣 you guys make me laugh. ❤️ my students!

CELEBRATING MY 900TH PAINTING! -yes, believe it or not... I have an inventory system that shows all of my paintings, and I just entered my 900th painting into inventory. It started with my first drawing in high school (photo below), then onto the 100+ sketches from the early 80's (only a few are in my inventory). Then, my first oil paintings in 1984. Since then, I have recorded almost all of my paintings. Every now and then I am reminded of another one that didn't get into my inventory. But, as of today... I have 900 in my inventory system! Cheers!

What is your inspiration to paint this week? I hope your Easter holiday was a fun one.

Well, here it is Monday again after a rainy weekend without plein air painting. My inspiration this week is all about finishing unfinished paintings and sewing!
Believe it or not I used to be a very good seamstress during school days to 30 years old. Then my painting took over all of my time and I enjoyed buying over sewing. But, with my back feeling so much better and my energy level coming back from less HHT bleeds... I need to find a hobby! I know you think ... well, you paint... but it is my career and has been for over 40 years. I love it and I love teaching. I also need a hobby! I have been daydreaming about sewing for a long time and feel the need to create again.

That is great because all creativity inspires more creativity. Every way in which we create brings more excitement back to the paintings we paint. What are you inspired by today?

Well... Spring was here... What happened?! Oh well, we can enjoy it off and on again for the next few weeks. The good news is that the plants feel it. I love going out to the backyard and seeing the new growth on my plants. There is a sense of pride in growing something and watching it get bigger and stronger every year. And when the new growth starts budding... it warms my heart.

My inspiration this week is the blossom on the trees, the new budding leaves in all their glossy beauty. What is yours?

(From my weekly email to my students. Every week on Monday I share my inspiration for the week and the lesson plan for my 4 classes. Do you want to be on my mailing list? If so, please private message me with your email address.)
