If you haven't seen, I've been taking the slow winter to write on some subtle topics in race ops on LinkedIn. Check out the latest here on Aid Stations: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/aid-station-102-advanced-topics-josh-reed-okusc/?trackingId=99whMXS72DgRtDeS%2FxDANw%3D%3D

In the meantime, I have two great long-term projects on the docket this year but would love 1-2 more before I start filling in with smaller jobs! If you're looking for a fractional employee (10% - "mostly full time"), I would be happy to chat, whether it's on my own or along with my regional team of contractors and friends.

20/11/2023

End of season and thinking of 2024: I don't go fishing for work or contracts, preferring to work off of reputation, referral, and helping people for free hoping it comes back to me, but I have something particular I'm looking for for the next 1-2+ years if someone knows of a need.

Basically, I am seeing if there is a 1/2-"full time" job that will allow me to grow as an *extremely* detail- and process- oriented project manager in events. This may or may not be a long-term, or can scale down. I'm fine if it isn't, and if it is.

Background: I have a few projects right now that I've laid a lot of groundwork on, that will require light maintenance and a few week-long trips next year: a few to Vegas, and a few to the middle East Coast. Beyond this I am not looking to take dozens of 'casual ops' gigs as I have the past few years (although I will likely pick up a few 1-2 day jobs locally when I have time). First, these distract me from the few hours a week I will need to put into the above projects outside of those event weeks. Second, I find all too often in casual jobs that I am not able to work as well as if I were involved in the planning process, and I want to do my best work for everyone.

If you have a growing project that may or may not turn into something, or are in transition, or have a flexible full-time that you'd look for some $$ negotiating room on to free up those given weeks, I could be interested.

Bonus points if they are in those regions, Texas (especially this winter), or Colorado.

DO NOT JUST NEED TO BE IN RACING. I have a long background and passion for events in general.

Announcing - Ultra X Nevada! A 5-day 220K stage race outside Las Vegas in October 2024.

I’ve had over 6 months to prepare to write this post, and I still don’t know how to properly express my excitement about the event we are launching next fall outside Las Vegas.

When Ultra X approached me last winter about helping bring their successful stage race series from the Eastern Hemisphere across the pond to the US, the first thing I said was, well to be honest.. “they have a beautiful website”. But the second thing I said was “this team clearly cares on an unprecedented level about everything from top level production and experience as any major race would, down to the most basic aspects of conservation, sustainability, and inclusivity that are key to trail and ultra racing”. And I was in.

Thus ensued 6 months of building and keeping the hardest secret I’ve had to keep professionally as someone who loves nothing more than talking about what’s awesome out there in racing. Relentless planning, course designing, creative discussions, meetings, a wild week earlier this month running around Las Vegas (and not in the way one normally would!), and a self-taught graduate seminar in public land permitting has led to what I truly believe is going to be one of the most amazing experiences a runner will find in 2024 - certainly one of the most exciting races, new or otherwise, in the USA.

The appeal of operating outside Las Vegas was always in the contrast - the world knows Vegas for the flash and lights, but too few (like myself until 7 years ago) know about the amazing natural beauty, diversity, and spectacular trail systems that lie just outside the city limits. So we created a course to showcase the full range of it - 5 days from 8500 feet down to 3,000 - from views of snowy alpine mountains and evergreen trees by Mt. Charleston, down to desert basins and cacti and colored rock formations around Red Rock - a true showcase of the American Southwest. With this, Ultra X Nevada is one of the most creative masterpieces I’ve been blessed to contribute to.

When I formed On Path Events, while part of my dream was to bring national-level knowledge to passionate local race directors building series and brand - and I’ve had many opportunities to do this - the other part of it was to be the ‘regional airline’ providing local/regional knowledge and support to expanding national and international series. Never did I imagine the first opportunity to achieve this would come in such a spectacular fashion. I’ve been intrigued and hooked since the beginning and while there is still a long way to go until we kick off at 8500 feet on Oct 21, 2024 - I am brimming with happiness that we’ve got this far and can share what we’ve created with the world.

Thank you Ultra X, Mark and Sam for giving me a metaphorical (and literal) sandbox in which to play, thank you Ryan Cooper my good local friend and guide, Chris and Josh and others yet to come for your bits of advice, and not least Carly for putting up with me over the last 6 months as my sounding board and source of sanity.

Everyone else - keep an eye out, tell your friends, sign up, and get ready :)

For many years I've been a big fan of the work Panos Gonos has done with Race Directors Hub to build a community for race directors to learn and grow. We've talked a long time and I've been a regular learner and contributor in his Facebook group.. well now, he was kind enough to have me and my good friend John Kelly on his Head Start Podcast to talk about one of my long-time passions and something I spent a few years focusing on - the use of photography to elevate the race experience, and how Race Directors can work to integrate their photo team into their entire operation.

https://headstart.buzzsprout.com/1757785/12579420-race-photos

The conversation is very low level and introductory, but I think raises some great initial topics as a "Race Photos 101", discussing how race photos can be far more than a tool that gives a runner a portrait, supporting your marketing and sponsorship goals - and how to work with your photo team for a better product.

Check it out!

Besides race medals and finisher shirts, the one experience item participants have come to expect from a race, particularly in this digital age, is a good set of professional race photos. And perhaps because of the cultural changes that have come ...

Out now - the first e-book release of "Getting On Path" - planning the future of your race event organization, for those who want it badly but don't know where to start.

http://onpathevents.com/getting-on-path-free-e-book/

An exciting new project has taken up a couple weeks and made me re-think this first release, which will have other examples and case studies added for a future print release in the coming months. Any and all feedback is welcome and may be included in this!

On Path Events provides focused Race Directing + Event Operations support w/ strong local partnerships in CO, TX, and all over the US. With 15+ years and over 1,000 events experience.

As the first digital edition of Getting On Path goes into final edits, here is an excerpt from an introductory chapter "Friends and Enemies of Event Org Growth". The book is written for Race Directors, but I've tried to write in a way that it can be accessible to any Event Manager, and hold some lessons for anyone growing a business that also just really likes racing.

In this early chapter I introduce two sets of themes that can be found in many a tome on building a better event organization, but in light easy language geared to the casual race/event director who is looking to (or knows they need to) fine-tune their processes to expand beyond themselves. These two sets of themes are revisited as you do some soul-searching and build a process to refine and scale your event organization over the course of the planning cycle.

delayed end-of-year announcement #3 .. when I was approached in September by Savage Race to take over their national timing account I last assisted with J-Chip in 2017, I said three things:

1. There's very few people that could get me back in the timing chair - you're one of them.
2. I want to make sure you're set up for the long-term; so I'd need to take this on with a respectable timing company to ensure the long-term relationship as I have my hands in many pots.
3. Savage Race is one of the best case studies of smart, responsible growth and good community management - huge values for my work as On Path Events.

So it is my pleasure to announce that this year, I will be handling Savage Race timing, scoring, technology etc duties along with everyone's good buddy Crisp McDonald of Go Race Productions in South Carolina. At least 5 will be onsite myself, supporting and managing the account along the way.

Great podcast from 3 Bros Running Company, some smart guys doing some really interesting work with interesting goals here in Texas. Great points for race directors of any level to take in.

How hard is it to start a new race from scratch and zero experience in race directing? Brothers William and Jeremy Fermo of 3 Bros Running share all.

I could post about the last few weeks at Ironman, or the upcoming Ironman 70.3 champs, or NYC Marathon, or the Navy 10 Miler that I direct, but instead i want to post that today i got to stand at an XC start line for the first time since i last raced it 19 years ago. Held a time machine on a beautiful afternoon in Denver for the 3A/4A regional meet.

Keeping it fresh with low key event jobs helping out whenever i can amongst a crazy busy season..

Good thoughts from Road Race Management on inflation in the events industry, and how to cope with supply chain issues.

Many road races are finding themselves in a financial squeeze, as costs go up and participation has failed to return to pre-pandemic numbers. Mere survival has become an issue for some. As reported in our June issue (Stay the Course), registrations are down roughly 20% from 2019 in those races that....

Saturday, the 4th year at the Rino 5k in Denver. Sunday, bike and run ops at the Cypress Triathlon, my 2nd event with HTX events in TX.

This fall has been largely contracted with Ironman, to allow me to focus ahead more on growth and a few events I am Director of. This doesn't mean I am out of the game, far from it! Looking forward to new partnerships and if the right time comes, mergers or hiring.

It takes a village (or a city), enjoyed my 1 announcer gig a year at Relay 2, beautiful Sloan's Lake for the Colfax Marathon along with the Colfax and HAL Sports team.

Yesterday ended a whirlwind month on the road with a distance record - in the same day directing a smooth 5K in Dallas, and helping wrap up the Mini Derby festival in Denver. Good to be home! Colfax Marathon is up next this week, and a season filled with Ironman Run Course and a few Ops Director gigs.

Always looking to grow and network with like minded event teams! The summer is light with planning and director jobs, so if I have a weekend free or we can partner on processes and planning, email [email protected]

Wrapping up a delightful week in West Virginia with the Canaan Valley Half Marathon. I've wanted to work with Robby McClung for a while now... guys like him are the reason i started OPE - a great and creative established event director who wants ops/project management help to take his event business to the next level. He puts on cool and fun races in a beautiful setting and I look forward to returning in August for the next one!

24/04/2022

I took dozens of photos and videos during yesterday's 20 hour work day at Ironman TX. But none matters to me so much as the experience of the line of carts diligently following an older gentleman, clearly hurting badly, who was determined at all costs to finish at 12:40 am, even knowing the finish line would be closed. His family joined him in a long line for the last mile along the waterway.

The quiet along the waterway was peaceful in a way that brings focus to the whole day.

This is why I do this. For every participant's goal - and for every person who helps a participant reach that goal.

After years of hustling with a new business and a new business model, after surviving (barely) a pandemic, and networking like all heck - I am pleased to say as of today that almost every weekend until November is booked or tentative. This means me onsite with an event, or a potential event, for On Path Events' business model of focused attention on one main event a weekend. Some of these are direct clients, some are just helping out good friends or great learning opportunities. Many are great opportunities supporting a growing organization that wants help with ideas, and creating structure within which to grow.

Now I am pleased to say my attention can turn to the other thing I really love - helping others in the business hustling to do the same. If you know of a race or event industry business with a need - let me know! I can try and recommend someone, help you find someone, whether or not I stay involved in a project management role during the week. As I always say, advice is free, only work will cost you. Helping me learn your needs only helps me serve events better.

And there's still a few weekends open, or opportunities for me to stop in and support outside of my big job that other weekend day :)

Good luck, events industry hustlers! Let's bounce back and make this year as good as ever with all that pent-up energy.

A resource I am slowly building as a reference for "road warriors", from produced race series to management companies and individuals. One of many small projects over the last few years to provide information and insight to the greater racing industry, and to track who is still active coming out of COVID.

The list is incomplete and possibly inaccurate - feel free to contribute! As all such projects it remains free and public for good of the industry.

Summary The purpose of this sheet is to create a high-level resource for those interested or involved in race event production at the national level in the US / North America - from producers to road warrior contractors The main qualification is that the race/company exists or operates in two o...

It's a heck of a time when year 2 of your new business is shut down due to pandemic. But as a scramble to start up again in 2022 comes to a close, i found myself chasing a few goals that came to the forefront during COVID -

1) step off of smaller jobs (hard to let go of friends!) And take on bigger ones.
2) return into the creative festivals, community events, and artistic presentations - aka fun times - that got me into events in the first place.
3) spend longer stretches at home. (It's hard enough having two homes a thousand miles apart!)

So it is appropriate in a year that already saw me step into the Asst RD and then RD position, and join many marathons and for the first time, Ironman's, I am also officially joining the Magical Winter Lights festival in Houston as site manager for the busy portion of their 40 day run this winter, with an eye to join more substantially next winter.

I stopped by for a site visit last week and was happy to see a thoughtful creative presentation around several areas and themes, and look forward to seeing what can happen next!

15/11/2021

The busy fall is a wrap! After much learning and growing these past several years at some of the largest events in the country, I took on my first official RD title with an event that exemplified why I started On Path Events.

The Navy 10 Miler in Fort Worth TX already had an established events team with their MWR division, and a vision from the Base Commander. They just needed someone to make a race - with consultants who understood the nuances therein. I got the lead from All Sports Timing, who I worked together with to make it happen.

We did it, launching a first year race in a few months, to 500 runners on a beautiful fall day, with dozens of aircraft, flyovers, a howitzer start, and a fun finish festival (with lots of food, and great shirts and medals).

We look forward to next year, and I look forward to more opportunities like this - with established teams who need someone to identify and fill the gaps!
