To grow Coco Marigolds (Tagetes patula ‘Coco’), follow these steps:
1. **Planting Time**: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or sow directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.
2. **Soil Preparation**: Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Marigolds thrive in soil enriched with compost or a balanced garden mix.
3. **Sowing Seeds**: If starting indoors, sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Keep the soil moist and warm (70-75°F) until germination, which takes about 7-10 days. For outdoor sowing, plant seeds 1/4 inch deep once the soil has warmed up.
4. **Transplanting**: If started indoors, transplant seedlings outdoors once they have 2-3 sets of true leaves and the risk of frost has passed. Space them 6-12 inches apart.
5. **Watering**: Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging. Marigolds can tolerate dry conditions once established.
6. **Fertilizing**: Use a balanced fertilizer once a month during the growing season to promote healthy growth and blooming.
7. **Maintenance**: Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers and prevent leggy growth. Marigolds are generally resistant to pests but keep an eye out for aphids or spider mites.
8. **Harvesting**: Remove spent blooms to prolong flowering throughout the growing season.
Coco Marigolds are great for adding vibrant color to gardens and containers with minimal care.

Composting is affordable and easy with the GEO bin. Set up is fast and take down is just as simple. In addition, we use an outdoor lid locking trash can as storage for our kitchen scraps. This saves us some trips to the bin and allows us to layer our greens and browns for optimal compost breakdown.
Shout out to my Duluth gardening bib overalls for protecting my clothes during morning chores on the farm! 👩🏻🌾
