Like the pillars of this historic memorial, Savannah and Jake have held one another through joy and celebration, through grief and uncertainty.

They weather every storm together – and are stronger, closer, and wiser for it.

Savannah and Jake had a perfect tiny wedding. It was intimate, intentional, and absolutely magical.

Not once did they lose sight of their values or their love for one another.

And they walked into their marriage knowing it’s their greatest adventure yet.

The girls who made me a mama & the wisely-chosen, perfect-for-me husband who helps me hold our family as one.

Walking into Mother’s Day weekend in awe of this beautiful, messy, connected, and charming little life we’ve created.

If you’ve lost your mother in any sense, never got to know her, or really dread her, I know this weekend can sting like salt in an unhealed wound. Or maybe you’re waiting for your own baby to make you a mama…I also walk with you and am in awe of your bravery and resilience.

My own mom got sober when I was 21. I completely lost the childhood I wanted and the mother I needed. While she’s almost 20 years into her recovery (and what a gift), she missed the ride. I solidly hated Mother’s Day for decades. It felt like a personal affront.

So, when I say I’m in awe, I truly mean it.

Before Cale and I got married a friend of Cale’s told him that arguably the six most important words in marriage are, “What can I do for you?”

I was frantically packing for my flight to DC after a morning of meetings when Cale popped home from work (yes, he goes into an office) and me asked the six most important words.

“I’m starving. I haven’t eaten yet today,” I told him.

A few minute later he reappeared and handed me a hot BEC from our local variety shop (can you get more New England?), gave me a big hug, and hyped me up for my first ceremony of 2024.

This is your sign to choose your partner wisely. I’m so glad I did — even if things aren’t “perfect” and we’re in a wild (and wonderful) season of life.

A two term presidency ago, we arrived my then-fiancés hometown, a place I’d visited twice before but never imagined living, after an epic six-month cross-country roadtrip.

I was hopeful for the life we’d build here and heartbroken for the one we’d left behind in Seattle.

Feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago…

P.s. If given the chance to camp up and down the coast of California, aimlessly explore the SW, post-up in Aspen and ski circles in the west: DO IT! Bonus if you have a Golden Retriever puppy and get engaged at sunrise in Sedona 🤍🤍

She said, “What if I just quit when it got tough? We wouldn’t have the wonderful life we have today.”

Lea and Tyler shared this unsolicited, but welcome advice that Tyler received from a patient who was celebrating 42 years of marriage.

She went on to tell him that tough times will come, but you have to stick by your person and refuse to waver.

I think about this a lot.

And I think about the magic and joy of their colorful August wedding weekend on the coast of Maine just as often.
