It’s come to my attention recently that a proposal by DTE to locate solar fields in the area of north Detroit just south of the former fairgrounds was rejected. New non-minority residents are buying up and to their credit fixing homes in an area with both long blighted, and on the next street desirable well maintained homes. The DTE deal would have provided a way for long suffering black homeowners, an opportunity out with above market prices, and generous relocation packages. However the deal was rejected by the new residents who voiced a “not in our backyard” attitude!
So many longtime Detroiter’s are stuck there many retired like myself unable to obtain bank financing, or unable to afford same to fix properties! I find this attitude deplorable
and short sighted! I have a child living in New Hampshire where you find solar panels on every other home, and taking a walk one would pass solar fields on the corner of a busy city intersection! Michigan needs to get on board, move with the times. The promise of free or reduced power charges being vetoed is a selfish act by those responsible! But alas it’s not surprising to me as it’s been my experience that Detroiter’s, old and new, will reject new tech or creative ideas that are in our best interest! Now I find new residents falling into this same old mindset! “Not in my Backyard”!

50 Cent officially launched G-Unit Studios in Shreveport, Louisiana, expanding his television empire. The new studio is expected to drive economic growth and job creation in the region. Since its inception in 2005, G-Unit Film & Television Inc. has produced various shows, notably for the STARZ network.

Besides the studio, 50 Cent is also engaging in local real estate to support community activities post-events. He's collaborating with Tyler Perry and aims to replicate Perry's success in Atlanta. The first projects at G-Unit Studios are set to begin soon, with non-scripted content starting in July and scripted in January.

Remembering singer, songwriter Laura Nyro who was born Laura Nigro on this date October 18, 1947 in The Bronx, NY.

She achieved critical acclaim with her own recordings, particularly the albums "Eli and the Thirteenth Confession" (1968) and "New York Tendaberry" (1969), and had commercial success with artists such as Barbra Streisand and the 5th Dimension recording her songs.

Between 1968 and 1970, a number of artists had hits with her songs: The 5th Dimension with "Blowing Away", "Wedding Bell Blues", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness", and "Save the Country"; Blood, Sweat & Tears and Peter, Paul and Mary with "And When I Die"; Three Dog Night and Maynard Ferguson with "Eli's Comin'"; and Barbra Streisand with "Stoney End", "Time and Love", and "Hands off the Man (Flim Flam Man)". Nyro's best-selling single was her recording of Carole King's and Gerry Goffin's "Up on the Roof".

She was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010, and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

Nyro died April 8, 1997 at the age of 49.
