Welcome December the last month of the year. They certainly seem quicker as time keeps moving on. An older photo of a fresh dusting of snow in 2016.
How many time's have we walked through these beautiful woodlands. A lot of us grew up with this on our doorstep. It was a courting spot. It was the Wild West for cowboys and Indians. It was an army fort and drinking spot. It's used for runners and cyclists alike. It's buzzing with wildlife and a fisherman's dream in past times.
It's an inspirational zone for writers, artists and all sectors of the arts find solace and comfort here. It's steeped in history and everyone has a memory about Drumboe woods.

Early morning shot before cars and people 😃

The year's 1930.. not this photo though. This is only a visualisation of how it may have looked minus the cars. A new sergeant arrived at the the twin towns. Post war of independence so thing's were still delicate and moods were sombre. The cope corner was the meet up point for a few tall tales with the usual suspects. Oule nogher mc monagle the local stonemason a couple of mc cruddens from cappry and paddy the goose mc Dermot Mullandrait were just some of the heads present on a mild august morning. A big seagull landed on the footpath outside Tim meehans shop. A bigger than normal bird by all accounts. Fresh outta Killybegs were it gained its stature and size. Paddy looked at breecen collum who joined the group and says never seen a bird that size on main street? Breecen says ive just come from the gullet down navenny and there's a crow eating a young calve. It must be 4.ft tall I tell ya.

Your saying that now and you've just reminded me of a bird that walked across the foot of cappry road last week heading over barney logues bridge says mc Crudden and it was at least ten foot high and and dipped its head over the bridge for a young trout swimming in the shadows.
Just then nogher interrupted and says I'm just coming from morning prayer. As I walked outta the chapel i looked up to see a huge magpie perched around the spire. It's wings were flapping with such vigour it blew my cap of. As i proceeded to walk towards Ballybofey it leaned its head down the river bank and with one gulp drank enough water that would build the old Finn college 3 times over.

Nothing was gonna beat this story so they all conceded with a jolly laugh and headed into to mc lauglins pub for a few beverages. Some of the stories told years ago were in the imagination, so much so that the tellers would eventually come to believe them. There's the Tim Herron stories the Micky Duffy stories the paddy Houston stories and many many more. All added with some humour and indeed some were fact. That was of course until a few drams were had and the tales grew momentum.
The new local sergeant one was no different, coming down the line!! And the famous story of 1957 the day Sputnik passed over Ballybofey.
The stories of Joe Bonar's forge, and the shenanigans of Willie Gregory.

Some of these stories were kept and passed on,purely because there was such poverty. A radio was a luxury and certainly no tv. People racked and helped one another. And during the war years people were rationed severely. Robbing orchards and gathering fruits were the order of the day. And fishing was the main protein intake. And imagination was education, Memory was good but literacy and mathematics were expensive and was left behind by many.

Some of the best comedy was written by such stories. Passed on by generations of families and communities. Nobody questioned it as it was just part of the community growing up in such dystopian times. It wasn't all bad though, by no means. But it was both educational and entertaining and still is listening to some of these tall tales to this day. A Saturday morning reflection and there's plenty more 🙂

Thanks for the recent shares the recent likes and comments. The consensual photos i posted over the months have gone down a treat. With local people either in their work environment or other. There's so much goodness and experience within the Finn valley community amongst our more senior residents. Pottering along and living their best lives.
Unsung heroes in some ways.. I've said on here before that I'm not a a photographer just an amateur hobbyist.

I was born into an artistic environment and grew up with music stories and had a colourful imagination from a very young age. I believe an accomplishment is somthing that you can achieve through helping others and see and feel a sense of belonging and enjoyment coming through them as the result of your own commitments and hard work. It's reciprocated back, only through mutual appreciation and alignment of why you do certain things to see the joy in others. Everyone has a story of sorts, I'm no different. Most of the character photographs are elemental. It dosent denote anything other than how I myself see them or indeed the audience. The nature photography is the same, i always believe in order to process an image a song or indeed wording, you have to feel it.

The energy from this is shared on, it's commented on or shared around and that's how a community is formed, albeit down the fibre optics like here on social media. But it's mainly positive. And if someone's memory is activated, and it takes them right back to a place and time that's a good thing even if it's only momentarily.
I'd find it difficult to measure up to the different light calendar production of 2021 , how it was received and how well it was sold out every single time. There's other plans in the pipeline but it's early days yet. For now thanks for visiting this we page and it's gonna have a lot more to offer down the line.
So keep enjoying the photos and the we stories that pop up now and again and they're completely of the cuff like meself

The flail lane off navenny street, leading to main street. Navenny street was once chestnut street before it was renamed in the early 20th century.

A local saddler by the name of eoin devenney once lived at Scott's old house opposite Finn park. The name changed because of an incident that took place at chestnut street . The local GP at that time dr Gormley was well known throughout the Finn valley area. He had a brother James who was the local gravedigger. He was known for his height and stature and well burnished good looks and handsomeness.

It was only a matter of time before his philandering ways and of the cuff flirty remarks eventually got him into trouble. A source at the time said that Gormley overstepped his flirtatious behaviour towards a certain member of a well known farming households daughter. She was engaged to be married to John deerys eldest son Patrick James deery navenny. Deery a dealer and drover travelled all over Donegal Tyrone and Fermanagh selling and buying cattle sheep and geese. A man who wasn't to be messed with, Deery stood a massive 6ft 6 wiry and as hard as they come . Getting clipped on the jaw was normal and Deery didn't spare when he confronted Gormley at the fair day in Ballybofey. Of course Dr Gormley looked after his well battered brother and deery was arrested and threw in the black hole for his trouble.

Getting back to devenney of navenny. He was a more sinister character the source said. Nobody knew of his family history or were exactly he came out of. Not even the local gossip Johnny Kelly, and he knew everything and everyone. All they knew was he had a beautiful sister Eliza. She rarely was seen out much only Sunday mass and occasionally at the fair days. One of these days I'll get to speak to Eliza, James Gormley was heard saying after a few half ones in wards hotel were he often frequented. She's the best looking woman in navenny he say's and I'll get my hands on her someday. Little did he know that same day walking down then, chestnut street he spotted Eliza walking up the we lane making her way home. This story wasn't printed or written about before because of the horrific outcome.

As the now unsteady Gormley made a tear to catch up with Eliza shouting at her, cmere for a court... a navvy shovel bleached the back of his head and fell down face first outside Byrne's house. Run home Eliza and pack your stuff quickly. There's much more to this story and impossible to write all down here. But skimping over it , several women were hassled repeatedly with Gormley's loutish behaviour down the year's. He lay there 8.05pm on a Thursday night stone cold dead. Looking down was Eoin devenney with his navvy shovel. The only other witness was Johnny Kelly from trusk road. Devenney looked at him and says, not a word Kelly ye hear. I'm warning you now not a word to anyone.

He hadn't the words uttered when a shot rang out from an old riffle mick byrne had and devenney fell right beside the face down lifeless body of James Gormley. Right beside were the big chestnut tree was were the navenny grill is now. Two men dead on chestnut street was the heading that was on the Donegal peoples press written by wj Doherty ballinaglack. In order to make the headline less obvious and to clean up the mess and the bad press it got for months afterwards a local councillor decided to rename chestnut street. Gormley was killed by a navvy by devenney . The area was navenny so navvy and devenney became one street NAVENNY.
The tree was cut down by Hugo Kelly meenglass.

So there you have a brief Tue evening reminiscent story of how navenny street wasn't named 😅 however storytelling was big growing up and old Eddie collum spout yard was legendary at telling ghost stories. Seeing as it's Halloween i thought I'd share one of my own 😆
Happy Halloween 🎃

DISCLAIMER: No shovels were used and bleached is a Finn valley word for a good hammering pronounced ' Hemmering' as in he was the worst for wear after getting his commupance 🫡 think we need a bit of humour and imagination in these current times. A time that's dramatically changing eh....😃
