Brooklyn has a special place in my heart. So, every time I get to document a wedding there, there is always something special about it. This day was no different. Getting to spend the day with Rachel and Samuel at the Brooklyn botanic gardens was such an amazing experience. Not only were they an amazing couple but, everyone involved was so incredible to be around.

The staff, the vendors, family, friends! Everything about this day was perfect.

Humongous thanks to the incredibly talented and for your help throughout the day. Looking back at this gallery and seeing it through all 3 of our visions is quite the experience and I can’t wait to share more!

Shoot for the light. Shoot for the mood. Shoot for the essence. Shoot for the colors.shoot for what makes YOU happy and stop allowing the industry dictate how you run your business and feed your creativity.

Want to use OCF 100% of the time? Do it.
Want to use only natural light? Do it.
Want to shoot moody? Go for it
Light and airy? YES!

When you start allowing yourself to be happy with your approach and stop caging yourself with words and RuLeS from “the industry”, you’ll find yourself being happier.

After a crazy last few months, I’m excited to get back into the hang of things and finally having time to share stuff from this amazing wedding season!

The most welcoming, kind and fun family and group of friends that were not only welcoming but, treated us like we were part of the family. And boy did they know how to party!

But, that was kind of a given if anyone knows the their families. A true representation of what a Westie stands for and I’m proud to know them!

Being a decade old in this incredible industry, I still, to this day, wake up incredibly grateful to be able to capture such incredible, timeless moments for my couples.

One of the absolute most beautiful mornings I’ve had in recent memory. spending the morning with her beautiful daughter in her arms while getting hair and make up done. As a father, I am a big believer in being the absolute best dad you can be. But I truly truly believe that there is no bigger love than the love a mother has for their children. I see it with , Landon and Leo and I was so honored to have seen it during this beautiful day.

Huge thanks to for being so accommodating throughout the reception day! Loving this new venue and I can’t wait to be there more often!

I will never ever in a million years take being a father for granted. It’s the one good thing I constantly try and excel at and the most important privilege ever handed to me. Landon and Leo are the world to me and damnit, no matter how tough things get, I will make sure I will always be there for them.

Not because it’s an obligation but, because It’s something I genuinely believe makes me the happiest.

So, yea.... to all of you father’s out there that are present.
Those that love your kids unconditionally.

In a world that demands perfection.
In a world that demands everything to be as curated as humanly possible.
In a world that is filled with artists bringing themselves down through the comparison game.

Sometimes it’s good to just capture. Sometimes it’s good to just document. Horizons don’t need to be fixed. Composition doesn’t need to be perfect.

It’s about the moments.

There will always be a place for perfection but, like everyone else, I need to get myself out of the funk and endless thought that everything I post needs to be technically perfect.

One of the ways I’m fighting this is through one of my all tome favorite pieces of equipment: my tiny GR3. A tiny point and shoot that inspires me to just …document.

I have it in a pocket for every wedding but, I also always take a good 15-20 minutes during the day and I purely document with it while I leave my big equipment behind. The 28mm on it is incredible and that focal length has taught me more about storytelling than any other piece of equipment ever has.

You know….

As someone that has been doing this for over a decade, I’ve had the opportunity to not only meet but, also photograph some incredibly talented peers.

This last week, I reached a point where I was ACTUALLY about to pass out from nerves. I was tasked with photographing one of the biggest couples in our industry, and in New York City. Not only are they both insanely talented, they have also provided me and many other educators with an endless amount of opportunities through their conference, fest. If you’re a photographer, you know what a huge deal and how nerve wracking this was!

I recruited the helped of since she’s way cooler than me and boy, was it an amazing time! They’re definitely as cool as they seem in these photos and I loved spending tome with them! We were driven around the city to a few different locations and Alissa and Sal let us be creative af! It was a dream session and I wish we could do it again and again!

TLDR: Holy crap, knocked it out of the park with this new 50mm 1.2

So, for the last few days, I’ve had the opportunity to test out the new Sigma 50 1.2 that was just announced a few weeks ago.

As some of you might already know, I am mostly a 50mm shooter.

I own about 15 of them ( Not kidding ) and I have a 50mm stuck to my main body for almost 100% of my weddings.
When Sigma announced this new 50 1.2 and after checking out some of the test images, I was intrigued. I never thought that anyone would be able to pry the 50RF off my hands or that I would choose a sigma lens over it.

Well, they sent me a copy of the lens and whoa!

I am in love. This thing is a dream. The rendering. The sharpness. The focus on my SL2s feels snappy and I have NEVER enjoyed using my Leica as much as I did when I had this lens on it.

I’m enjoying it so much that I actually might consider making the Leica SL2s and this 50 my main workhorse combo to replace my R3 and 50RF.

It’s that good.

I’m working on putting together a full review on it but , in the meantime, here are some shots that I took of and her beautiful family from this past weekend at conference.

It's taken me a while to figure out dates but, I finally am able to announce these two.

BROOKLYN 5/7-5/8: Well, it's my favorite city in the world. and I just have to do a workshop here every year. Last yea, the spots filled up so quickly that I had to do 2 dates in Brooklyn! I will most likely not be doing that this year so, once it fills up, you will lose your opportunity to get a spot.

NEW HAVEN 6/18-6/19: If you want to spend two days learning lighting and photographing at one of the most beautiful campus in the country, you need to sign up for this! We will be near Yale campus and if you've ever been there, you know how beautiful it is! I can't believe I have never hosted a workshop here and. I'm so excited about it!

Hey hey!!

Happy … Monday? Is today Monday? It feels like a Monday.

Happy Monday everyone!

They say that you should introduce yourself to your audience either every 9 posts or every time you take a nice photo while covering your crotch with a camera. So, since both apply, here is my intro.

- my name is Esteban Gil
- I am a wedding photographer obsessed with being creative
- There is one thing that I love more than being a photographer and that is being a dad.
- I remember taking this photo and hating how I felt because I would much rather take photos while I wear a pair of jeans, my super beat up converse and a black tshirt. But I get that sometimes, I have to dress up.
- I (don’t) love long walks at the beach
- I have an oddly large big toe and a hitchhikers thumb.
- These pants are way too tight on me
- I had a very love/hate relationship with the wedding photography community when I first started so, I founded and now I love it.

I’ve always been told that you shouldn’t have a black and white photo as your main photo. I’ve also been told that your main photo shouldn’t be of people’s back. With that being said, I was also told that I shouldn’t give a damn what the algorithm likes and I should post the stuff I love regardless of what social media thinks.

AND I LOVE THIS PHOTO OF and because it’s so elegant and I love it so much.

Also, here’s some random facts:

1. this is THE MOST fit wedding party I will ever photograph and I have never felt so out of shape in my life at a wedding. 10/10 would let them all train this dad bod for sure.

2. This was probably one of the WILDEST reception parties I’ve ever photographed. Party animals! Don’t believe me? Scroll over to the end for proof!

Next up! Two of the coolest people ever at one of the coolest venues ever! I was talking to someone about this wedding earlier and I told them that I could have probably photographed it with a toaster and it’d still look beautiful. LOOK AT THIS PLACE OMG! is just absolutely stunning!
