Inner City Agriculture By: Pamela Reese Smith We are experienced Black Urban Farmers. We plan, organize, implement special projects, and Training. Our Garden is nestled in a the City of Rochester.

We love gardening and we want to surround ourselves around people who love it too. We have worked this small Urban Farm for 28 years. The garden houses, herbs, Flowers, Vegetables and a variety of special vintage mints. We understand how important it is to grow your own produce. We intend to show models of successful programs that were established in inner city neighborhoods with the hope that the

se projects will be replicated all over the world in underserved communities. We would like to see these projects cropping up all over. As us we can help.

Mother Nature. Washington, DC Tornado Warning. July 4th weekend. 2021. I love storms.

The area below was a perennial garden full of beautiful plants. We had a very difficult time each year with bind weed strangling the plants. We did everything to keep them under control. For years I did not want to change it but I finally realized it was for the best. We decided to dig up the entire area. We got rid of everything. It took about a half day to remove the plants, and I raked it a hundred times to get it smooth enough to seed it for grass. The area is transformed and looks very nice. It was a lot of work and worth it. By the way if you have grass areas that need to be thickened this is the perfect time to spread your seed. In the spring it will grow in nicely.

Pamela’s Story

In 2007 PathStone Corporation (formally Rural Opportunities) hired me as the Community Project Manager. I was charged to help take action on a neighborhood plan that was developed by the Marketview Heights Collective Action Project (MVHCAP) . Under my guidance the Plan came to life. See plan below.

One of many great achievements as Community Project Manager was the Field to Table project. The Field to Table Project was started on a shoe string budget and was developed into a thriving summer program for inner city youth who live in food deserts. This project was a fast paced successful action project that is now a local resident led project that is still operating during the summer season in Rochester, New York. The garden is located at 127 First Street in the 14605 Neighborhood. You can see the Field to Table activities in the Inner City Agriculture By: Pamela Reese Smith. Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Community Partnerships joined the project and engaged students and gave them the opportunity to volunteer at the garden, and interact with the children and families in the neighborhood. Children’s garden operates for six weeks during the summer. Through grants and other donations the students were paid to work for the six week program.
