NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Ride On” by Screamer. That was another NWOTHM band called Screamer from Sweden and I immediately loved it when I first heard this song. It totally sounds like a track released in the 1980s! And some of the reviews on this album read this way, “Top notch NWOTHM!!! Love this band, love this album! If you love 80s metal classics like Judas Priest, DIO etc. Then you'll love this record!” Another one says,“Old school metal for the new school”. This is one of my favorite metal albums to come out in the last few years. Has some of the most catchy tunes I've heard in some time. This band brings me back to the glory days of Maiden and Priest but with their own style and sound. Can’t wait for the next Screamer album.”…and that about sums it up.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Raising Fear” by Armored Saint. This was the last Armored Saint studio album with guitarist Dave Prichard, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 1989 and died of the disease the following year, as the band was preparing for their next album Symbol of Salvation. As far as this song is concerned, I love the guitar work and melodic yet heavy riffage by Dave Prichard as the whole band is ripping it up. Simply a classic 80s metal track. And as I said I’ll be at the WASP / Armored Saint show this Saturday night Dec 14th. And I’m looking forward to this show because I recently saw Armored Saint in Orlando, FL this Summer opening for Queensrÿche on their “Origins” tour. And unfortunately, lead singer Jon Bush was sick that night and couldn’t perform. So the band enlisted Jason McMaster, the lead singer from Dangerous Toys and I was pleasantly surprised that he did a great job singing Armored Saint songs. But there’s nothing like seeing the original singer Jon Bush live in concert.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “The Torture Never Stops” by W.A.S.P. And if you want to see WASP in concert, they will be playing at the Hollywood Palladium on Sunset Blvd this coming Saturday Dec 14th and tickets are still available. I will be there reporting on the show as W.A.S.P. will be playing their debut album in its entirety, as it’s the 40th Anniversary of it’s release. But I’ll be looking forward to the opening band moreso because it’s the mighty Armored Saint.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Metal Church” by Metal Church on the “Long Distance DJ Triple Play” selected by Sean from Germany. When I first heard the debut Metal Church album in 1984, I immediately loved it. Great combination of melodicism and thrash. And to this day, Metal Church is still putting out great music like their last album from 2023 called “Congregation of Annihilation” with new lead singer Marc Lopes. And I saw them on this last tour at The Whisky A Go Go and they were phenomenal. And Marc Lopes vocals are almost identical to original lead singer David Wayne who sadly died from a car crash in 2005.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Got The Time” by Anthrax on the “Long Distance DJ Triple Play” selected by Sean from Germany. That was a cover song originally written and recorded by Joe Jackson in 1979. And Jackson did not hold Anthrax's version in high regard. In the June 1991 issue of Q magazine, Jackson remarked: "I think it sounds kind of clumsy compared to the way we did it on our Live album. I mean, our version is really smoking. Theirs is actually slower than ours. The way I feel about it is, ‘Thanks for the royalties, guys.’" In another interview, he explained, "I could never quite understand why they were called a 'speed metal' band because we played the song about twice as fast as they did." Wow, Joe Jackson sound a little bit like a hater!

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Peace Sells” by Megadeth on the “Long Distance DJ Triple Play” selected by Sean Decker from Germany. And for all you old-school metalheads, you remember that opening bassline was used for the MTV News soundbite. But I remember seeing the video for “Peace Sells” and “Wake Up Dead” on MTV back in 1986 and I went out and bought the album. Now I already knew that Dave Mustaine was fired as the original lead guitarist of Metallica and I had heard the debut Megadeth album “Killing Is My Business… and Business Is Good”, but the production quality and the songwriting was so much better on “Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying?”. Anyway, great way to start off the “Long Distance DJ Triple Play” Sean.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “The Inciter” by Mammothor. Wow, what a slamming track from a band I just discovered. I love the fact that this band reminds me a little of Mastodon. The lead singer of Mammothor is Travis Lowell, and his voice sounds like Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor who sings the song, “Oblivion” and a bunch of others. I love everything about this song from the drumming to the riffs and the vocals, and that melodic chorus is phenomenal. Again that was a band called Mammothor with the song, “The Inciter”. What a great find! C’mon people clap along with me.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “We’re Gonna Make It” by Twisted Sister. That was the lead track on Side 2 of the album. Remember when we used to say stuff like that? Whether it was on vinyl or cassette, we’d say something like, “What a great way to start Side 2 of the album!”. Nowadays there’s no Side1 or Side2. Now songs are just numbered 1,2,3,4 etc… on streaming services or when you go buy a Digital album. Kinda boring. But what a great song by Twisted Sister from my favorite TS album!

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Vanilla Circus” by White Tygër. That was a great new song from a UK band that released their debut album in 2022 called “This Is the Life”. And White Tygër have released 3 Singles in 2024, including this track “Vanilla Circus”, which will appear on their sophomore album called “Back of the Class” to be released on Dec 20, 2024. But I like how their Spotify page describes the band. “White Tygër plays a mix of old school Rock from the 70s/80s and early 90s with a modern twist, displaying the bands influences ranging from Classic Rock to Sleaze Hair Metal, straight up Heavy Metal and Modern Metal styles.” And there are a number of NWOTHM bands making great music. And these musicians are only in their 20s, 30s and 40’s. So they are playing a style of music that they missed out on experiencing because they weren’t even born yet. I love it!

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Invincible Shield” by Judas Priest. If any of you listening right now have never heard the new Judas Priest album from beginning to end, you are missing out on some amazing music. To me, this album is so good, that I’m struggling where to place Invincible Shield in the “Best Of Priest” catalogue. They have so many great albums that I find myself going back to listening over and over again, to like Hell Bent For Leather, Defenders of the Faith, Screaming for Vengeance and now I have Firepower from 2018 and Invincible Shield from 2024. There’s just too much good! Who cares about proper grammar.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Rising Force” by Yngwie Malmsteen. Great lead off track featuring new vocalist Joe Lynn Turner. This album Odyssey was probably considered the most commercial album in Yngwie’s catalogue which reached #40 on the US Billboard 200 Chart, and stayed there for 18 weeks, due mainly to the radio friendly song “Heaven Tonight” which received a lot of airplay on the radio and MTV.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Psychotic Reaction” by Trouble. Trouble was formed in 1980 and is considered one of the founding fathers of Doom Metal especially with the release of their first 3 albums Psalm 9, The Skull and Run To The Light, which I bought those 3 cassettes back in the 80s. But they had change in direction when they signed to Def American Records in the 1990s with more uptempo, groove oriented riffs. So my favorite albums became the self-titled Trouble album from 1990 and my ultimate favorite being Manic Frustration released in 1992.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Scared” by Dangerous Toys. That’s my favorite song from their debut album, especially that chorus which is so catchy and melodic. The lead singer is Jason McMaster and when he joined Dangerous Toys, it was a complete departure in style from Jason’s previous band Watchtower, which was very raw metal with a lot of time signature changes, and that band Watchtower was part of the creation of technical thrash metal in the 80s.

TT Quick was formed back in 1979 in Osbornsville, New Jersey. Here’s a little bit of trivia. The “TT” in the band name stands for “Thrown Together”. So the full band name spelled out is “Thrown Together Quick”. And yes, that was Marc Tornillo on lead vocals, who has been the lead singer of the band ACCEPT since 2009. And I totally dig the raw production quality of that track. Marc Tornillo sounds great, and the band is firing on all cylinders. Just a fantastic underground hidden treasure of METAL!
